How do I know?

Recommended Posts

If I have a rep watch and I don't know what type of movement it has in it, is there an easy way to tell? Yes, I can take the back off and look, but I won't necessarily know what I'm looking at. I don't suppose it would be as simple as seeing what it is stamped on it somewhere, like A7750 or whatever. Is there a post somewhere that has pictures of each type, or something like that?

There's always little attributes and characteristics that can help determine what kind of movement is in a watch...

-Whether it winds manually or not (automatic), as mechanical Seikos often do.

-Winding feel of the gears.

-If a date function is quick set or not; what direction the date rotates.

-The date font/style of the date numerals, if the watch is unmodified.

-The direction one needs to rotate a crown to set the time.

-Subdial spacing or function.

Of course, the best thing to do if in doubt is to post a picture.
