Don't mess with the Finns! :)

hey guys.....sorry to sound bitchy....but weren't they fighting side by side with the germans? This, surely before the treaty with the russians and turning against the germans, ok...but well....

I think "fighting side by side" is a stretch, and inaccurate if you're talking about the Winter War. The only common war goal of Finland and Germany was to defeat the Russians, who were the aggressors in both the Winter War and the Continuation War.

I don't consider Finland to be an Axis member like Italy, Japan... or even Spain, for that matter! Finland was not a fascist state, did not invade its neighbors, and did not persecute its Jews.

M. , and everybody,

I didn't imply any ideological question, it's just that it isn't easy to have a overall view of these times. Alliances were made and dismantled....

Yeah... actually my post was a bit against this forum principles. I didn't want to talk any politics or create any controversy... and I have nothing against Russian people. What happened in the past, stays in the past. But history is history... you can't rewrite it.

This is just an amazing stat, and both my late grandfathers were in that war. They were tough as nails and my role models. And besides, 6th of Dec was our independence day so I felt a bit patriotic. Without those veterans I wouldn't live in a nice house today... or drive a Merc or wear a genuine Rolex watch.

No need to apologize, P! I love reading and discussing wartime history, and you should be able to ask honest questions about things that happened 71 years ago.

The Winter War is especially interesting to me, since it was such a David-and-Goliath conflict that isn't too well-known outside of Scandinavia.

Yes indeed. They were amazing.

Two "supertroikas":

Vasiljev-Bilyaledtinov

Harlamov-Petrov-Mihailov

and after them:

Kasatonov-Fetisov

Larionov-Makarov-Krutov

USA Lake Placid 1980 is still probably the biggest upset in the sports history.

I remember that very game... I was watching it live. I was 8 years old, it was amazing.
