hiker01
Thanks all........ Yup.....when I left, it started to get crazy up there. That's the reason why we started a bit early, by late March the crowd starts piling up! These deaths up there won't be the last until the Nepali gov't. starts managing the application and enforce some regulations or laws limiting the number of people going up each day. I mean 150 0f you queeing to go up, after staying in the death zone overnight....@15% oxygen. By this time your brain and lungs are starving for oxygen....and you only have enough to summit and get down.....if the wait is 2 hours up, that means the wait will be about the same to go down, that's almost four hours you exposed yourself up there and slowly running out of oxygen! I still think I made the right decision to go down in my situation and when I still can. Most oof the people who die up there have so many different reasons why they decided to stay and push themselves....but I think one or two of a them are: - "I'm here already, I can do it!" - and this is while their brain don't have enough oxygen to think straight in the 1st place. - "$hit, I spent $70K (add or minus a few thousand!), I better finish this!" - and this is while their brain don't have enough oxygen to think straight in the 1st place. I feel for those who died up there, but it was there choice!

hiker01
Sorry to disappoint, but no. I tried to do the Northface this year.....and I found out that my body can't go any higher than 21000ft. Here's some pictures from last May's attempt: Lhasa....Potala Palace and other monasteries: Watch of Choice @Drepong Monastery: On the way, the Tibetan Plateau: Himalayan Range: Rongphu Monastery....start of the Climb to Base Camp: Base Camp: Trek to Advance Base Camp: The Summit: Advance Basecamp: Zhangmu....last Tibetan Town before crossing to Nepal: Zhangmu Hotel Restaurant Board: The North Face Basecamp/Advance basecamp trek is not as dramatic as the South Face....but the Drive from Lhasa thru the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayan range was breath taking.....
Mendota Explorer
This is a great read. I'm sorry your expedition was cut short, but I am very glad to read you were OK in the end. Things can definitely end very differently up there. I was wondering, since you didn't make it past the Everest base camp, is there a partial refund that you get since you didn't require any services beyond that stage of the expedition, or is it a flat price regardless of how far your journey goes? How do you prepare for this? Do you climb/hike year round to prepare? Have you done any other expeditions of this magnitude? It's been great reading this and seeing the amazing photos. No Refunds...... You can't train for Altitude, but acclimatize. Some people just can't do high altitude. Sir Edmund Hillary can't go up past 14500ft. after he summitted. You still need to train for stamina....on this current trip, I did HIIT 3x /week + climbing 120 floors and walking 6 miles 3x /week. I still got sick during our overnight at advance base camp! One of the RWG Classic posts. Fantastic pictures and a great story! Thanks! Some more Pictures in no particular order.....'
Mendota Explorer
Wow. No refunds. So if you had twisted your ankle getting off the plane at that little airport in Lukla, and never even got to take a single step on the journey, that's tough sh*t? That's brutal. At least you made it to the base camp. That's an experience of a lifetime right there.
