Hello, My Name Is Aero And I'm A...

... Pam Pretender :brow: I have pretended to like Pam's... even bought a few (reps) but I can't bond with them. Do you ever get that feeling you're that one guy who can tell that the emperor is really naked?

This is not a thread which should be interpreted as "Pam bashing". This is just my quest to find out how many people think the same (I think I'm pretty much in the "norm" as most things go and I'm confused why I seem so far outside on this).

If you like, love or would trade your first born for a Pam... there is no need to reply. I respect your love of the brand and wish you the best with your fine purchase. I'm really interested in which personalities (of this board) don't see the beauty of this brand. I really wonder if there is a common thread in the personalities. For instance I picture Nanuq as a person who would not wear one.

No need for flames :black_eye:

Why flame? Usually people don't like Pams on photos but when they wear their first they hook badly..

I know MAAAAAANY people just saying they don't like pams by just looking them but i think you are one of the few that decided to buy and still don't like. ;)

I like PAMs ... it's different strokes for different folks. Hated them at first. There are others who hate the Patek Nautilius or AP style.

I think I've moved away from what I first liked in reps - the ubiquitous (not the person) R*l*x... probably because most people may say "is it fake?". The design is copied everywhere too... I like something slightly different from that, and like Omegas too :thumbsupsmileyanim:

It's all personal preference... you may like a BMW and I may like a Mercedes... you may like Pamela Anderson and I may like Jennifer Lopez... whatever you like is what you like, you don't need approval from anyone else, so go get that rubber PAM sssurfer found :Jumpy:

I can say I thought PAMs were a total joke when I got here... now I am starting to think a few of them on some nice brown straps are interesting... and I don't like straps... and I don't like brown...

There is something unnatural about PAMS... they are ugly... yet they may you feel they are beautiful... it's like beer and ugly girls...

Never understood it, still don't get it.

I actually toyed wit the idea one day after reading the WT article comparing the Flyback Chrono with the Blancpain but it lasted a day...

Looks like it was designed by a bunch of Navy Seals in a bar one night after one too many beers. The crystal looks like a 1950's TV, the crown guard looks like a watertight door off the Titanic and the numbers look like the large button phone I got my 80 year old parents.

But I did almost buy the 212!!!!

All members who bought some PAMs and don't like them are kindly begged to send them to me.

I'll relieve their annoyances for free.

I am even going to cover the shipping costs (as long as they are not like on some eBay items...)

All interested pls PM or email me.

I don't understand why people should like PAMs. I don't particularly like them... but it's just me, so what's the big deal? And yes, I've tried on a genuine PAM. Did nothing for me. I can't really explain why, it just didn't.

Some PAM fans are like pushy salesmen.

I've heard these about 30 times:

"Hey, what's wrong with you, you don't have any PAMs?"

"You absolutely HAVE to get one... you don't understand the craze until you get your first one."

etc.

I don't see Omega and Breitling fans "pushing" their favourite watches like that. I can perfectly understand that someone doesn't like Navitimer or Planet Ocean.

I feel PAMs (watches and fans) are important part of the community... and PAMs sure are interesting and original watches. I have many close forum friends who like them. Actually most of them do.

I even think some PAMs look nice... like the blue Regatta Chrono... or generally all the models with a bracelet. Panerai is among the few watch brands that became successful and prestigious without copying anybody else. Now that's something to admire.

Personally, I have ZERO interest in owning one. If that makes me "lesser" watch guy in someone's eyes... sorry guys.

It's like with some Rolex models. I could never wear a Rolex Yacht-Master. Just not my style. Or Omega Constellation, which is almost feminine watch. Or something like Rolex Cellini... God forbid!

I can still appreciate the beauty of these watches... and I can perfectly understand that some people like them.

PAMs certainly aren't feminine, but perhaps they're just too radically different from the conservative and standard sports watches that I like. It's like music taste... how can you force someone to like anything? I don't generally like Jeff Beck's music (in his solo projects) but I can still appreciate and respect his talents and skills.

Styles and tastes come and go but I wonder if some day these watches will be looked at like '70 hair styles or leisure suits. When I look at one and hear the passion in their followers,....I can't help but think of "The Emperor's New Clothes".

Does anyone remember how you couldn't get a Cabbage Patch doll? The damn things were ugly as sin.

Henry Winkler was the biggest star in the world for about 3 years.

Sally Jessie made eyeglasses the size of the Hubble space telescope all the rage once.

aero, your sentiments can be applied to just about any watch brand depending on personal tastes. There are many well respected brands that I admire but would never care to own or wear. BTW, I also hated those ungly contraptions when I was first introduced to them, a buddy's gen Pam 111. :p

I now enjoy Pams and they are a great contrast to the others in my collection. I wear mostly tool/sport watches but sporting Pams is a nice refreshing change. They are very different from most anything else on the market which is a plus. My wife is the one that has one bonkers over them as have her friends. Women really do love those ugly Pams!

Top tier Pam reps are very well executed & use high quality movements so I can see why so many find them interesting enough to at least try out.

Haha.. I don't quite get the rolex sub craze either.. but hey, your favorite song is yours to like.. :thumbsupsmileyanim:

If I don't like your favorite song so what? :) It should not matter.

Take music for example,

I know people who can listen and enjoy to the later works of Thelonious Monk easily, like "Evidence" from the latest uncovered Carnegie Hall recording.. Maybe they hear something I don't.. or maybe they are just saying they like it to impress me..

Same thing goes for watches IMHO.. whatever stirs--or shakes--your martini :D

Hey Aero! Where's the wagging dog avatar? :thumbsupsmileyanim:

You got it... I personally think PAMs are atrocious. In fact I believe that is the first time I've ever typed the name of the brand.

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Double-ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

No thanks. They just don't "do it" for me. Give me a watch I can use as a hammer in an emergency. :Jumpy:

Thank god I was right about Nanuq :) I've got to dig up the floppy dog avitar again someday. :D

The thing about Pam's which makes this a bit more than just "different strokes" is that they're so over the top popular. Like I said, I'm pretty much in the norm when it comes to styles and taste. Back in the early 70's I thought my parents avacado green fridge, burnt orange [censored] carpet and yellow counter tops were hideous. Turns out they were.

I did find a common personality to my own in By-Tor; he said "It's like with some Rolex models. I could never wear a Rolex Yacht-Master. Just not my style. Or Omega Constellation, which is almost feminine watch. Or something like Rolex Cellini... God forbid!" I feel EXACTLY the same way about each model you mention. I also strongly agree with another sentement from By-Tor, he said "I feel PAMs (watches and fans) are important part of the community... and PAMs sure are interesting and original watches". I could not agree more.

For what it's worth, I feel the same way about rap music (<-- oxymoron) and wonder if the Pam craze follows the same form of popularity. Does anyone really like it? Are the cool people perpetuating it and others just "say" they like it? :bleh::g::bleh:

Are you saying that maybe it's a case of "Would you like PAMs because everyone else liked PAMS?"

That's a good question...

Would you wear clothes just because everyone else did? :g:

Oh wait... add the Rolex Explorer II. Ewwwwwww! But the Explorer I rocks.

ExpII's? I always thought they were understated for a Rolex. I guess I'll have to work on your ExpII perception :whistling:

There's two things the current 20 to 30 year olds have brought us that I just can't deal with... rap & fat girls in thongs. Where I live now we have neither :thumbsupsmileyanim:

Would you wear clothes just because everyone else did?

Trust me when I tell you that I follow that rule out of respect for you and all people... also any primate with eyes... fish too.

Rolex Cellinis, Yacht-Masters, Explorer IIs, rap music, BMWs ...

Hey, I'm not a huge Beemer fan, either. But I wouldn't mind owning one of these (vintage BMW's rule):

My favourite watchmaker is Omega, good history, nice line of models and generally good looking, understated watches (mind you I can't stand the Constellation...)

But I do like certain PAMs but don't like the Subs at all. I like the simplicity of the dials (don't care much for the Chronos, GMTs for this reason).

Open another Bud and take deep breaths. Through your mouth is just fine. Honest.

Do you drink because everyone else does? Did you start drinking, even though it tasted like pi$$ because everyone else did? Did peer pressure get you?

:g:

Edit: Post is aimed at the reader, not necessarily Nanuq.
