Aging a strap

Cats

Recommended Posts

I just bougth a strapworks 1950 which i want to mount on my vintage PAM.

My question is what's the best way to age it.

Should i use neatfoot oil over and over ??

Should i use gun oil over and over ??

Drive with my car over it to give it more texture ??

Bleach it ??

Damage it with sandpaper ??

Any suggestions

i recommend to put it in water with some softening oil for an hour or less and then treating it with a light sandpaper. This should do it, then some leather treatment oils to regain the leather condition and it should be good

I highly advice you not to use bleach. You wont be happy with smell, believe me ;)

Don't destroy a good decent strap.. Wear it as it is.. It is not a true vintage Pam is it ? :p

Anyway, if you see at Psti, many vintage genuine owners change their rotten old vintage straps for new decent ones ;)

Other option but a vintage leather strap :)

PS.. the pics are not blury ... you just had one too many...

this is my morning.. in the field throwing in with my workers watch... notice the lever pin is sticking out.. won't seem to go back in..

3 years old bought in thailand.. russian movement .. still runs like a charm.. 7 day's a week time is almost spot on... i have buffed the scratches out of the mineral glass many times..

anyway... the newer looking strap is what the strap on the fiddy used to look like.. didn't take long for that to change (not 3 years). matter of months...since it's buffalo it went into very hot water several times to shrink it back when it stretched out too much.. rubbed candle wax all over the hide then dipped in boiling water to melt the wax into the hide... made it nice and stiff but still comfortable.. the parafin added the wax oils to the strap to exellerate the "look"... maybe it's time to start all over.. looking kind of hagard...

if you really want to use oil... go to the sporting goods and get baseball glove oil...if your in EU... cricket oil... (joke)
