3384danny Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 are there any iwc gst reps with totally flat crystals? seems to me that most are with domed ones, with a bit of distortion thanks
sye46 Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 not sure if there are non-domed reps..... but the gen uses a domed crystal as well
sye46 Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 My GST has a flat crystal. really? the dome shape is the inside of the crystal. look at the minute and second hands.... are they kind of bent? (look from an angle) that is because the crystal is domed.

3384danny Posted June 23, 2006 Author Report Posted June 23, 2006 so the crystal is flat, but domed on the inside? is there distortion where you look at the watch from an angle... say at about 160 degrees? because i find that the cheaper reps with synthetic crystals are domed, and the vision of the dial is compromised when looking at the watch from an angle btw rocket754, who did you get your gst from?
swdivad Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 The genuine is domed, as is my rep. The genuine also has a bent second hand. There is no distortion on my dial when looking at the watch from a low angle. I am almost tempted to keep this after looking at it for a while, starting to feel the love
Pugwash Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 look at the minute and second hands.... are they kind of bent? (look from an angle) that is because the crystal is domed. No it isn't... It's so the second-hand is closer to the dial to eliminate parallax errors on the stopwatch. The chrono second hand cleverly uses the 8-beats a second to make quarter-second ticks. The second-hand needs raising to get past the subdials and bending at the end to get back to the dial height. The bend isn't an illusion, it's a feature. Here are some pretty pics for your amusement. Here, you can clearly see the quarter-second tempo: Here, you can clearly see that it's a single-bend, not a curve, in the chrono hand:

jkerouac Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 Awesome picture of the movement of the chrono second hand. I salute the photographer.

Got mine from King..
Chronus Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 Feel it more ... Mine is finally on the way! Great picture there, no reflections on the dial. Does it have AR coating, or just the way you took the picture?
Pugwash Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 Great picture there, no reflections on the dial. Does it have AR coating, or just the way you took the picture? No AR, I'm just that good. I use diffuse lighting and a polarising filter. It's tricky at first but ... lesson 4 explains it.

sye46 Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 I do know for a fact that the GST 3707 uses a convex sapphire glass. I also read on timezone a long time ago that it was a reason why the hands were bent...... but i guess they were wrong.
