raptor
As the topic mentions, is it possible to identify Sapphire and Mineral Glass (Synthetic Sapphire)? If possible, how? Regards Raptor
offshore
Either buy a hardness tester, if you want to be 99% sure, or run a water beading test, and be reasonably certain. Offshore
twinfake
IMHO the water beading test is not the greatest test. Even on gens it is not a good test.
offshore
Agreed, but better than nothing, if you don't want to shell out for a sapphire tester. Or if you handle them a lot, you can pick with a reasonable amount of accuracy - mainly the sound, when tapped with a fingernail. Offshore Same crystals used in reps and gens anyway. slickdick
Another way, is to stick the crystal against your forehead saphire is cold, mineral adjusts faster to room temperature.
z3k0
Another way, is to stick the crystal against your forehead saphire is cold, mineral adjusts faster to room temperature. Interesting point, I'll definitely try this. Just to mention - if you have AR coating on crystal, water beading test is completely useless. regards
TeeJay
A method I've used, is a 'tap test', with the edge of the fingernail on the crystal. Sapphire 'tinks', mineral 'thunks'
