  5. Long and interesting road on this build. I know there are a lot of TC's out there and this is nothing unique or special, but just a story about how builds go sometimes. Back in October when TC announced that he was doing a new LV with some upgrades, I decided to order one and I believe I had one of the first orders in. Even though I had sworn off modern Rolex’s, I convinced myself that a 2004ish 16610 LV was somewhat “vintage”. Also convinced myself that the green insert was Seahawks green and I was hoping to have this on the wrist for the Super Bowl run. I know…I am still recovering from the last play fiasco. I contemplated doing a full on franken with gen dial/hands and a Yuki or gen movement, but I am still not sure how much I will wear this so decided to a light franken with a few genuine parts that I felt would make a difference. In my eyes this was going to be a quick and simple build… Matt agreed to do this build for me. So I started sourcing parts and Matt found me a brand new Swiss ETA 2824. Notice the stamps on the new ETA, they have changed them—maybe because of all the clone movements….He converted the CP to be higher and gen like. It took much longer to receive the watch than expected because of the delays with the new TC LV insert. I had sourced a gen insert anyways so TC shipped the watch directly to Matt without the insert. Matt assembled the watch (expertly as always) and sent me some pictures. The piece looked great, but I noticed that the lugs on one side appeared thinner than the other. So I asked about it and sure enough one side (front and back) was definitely thinner. So I sent the case to the “case whisperer” Dbane to thin the lugs on one side to match them up, work the cg’s and do a little brush and polish work. Contemplated doing his magical bevels, but being a 16610 we decided to keep it gen spec. This is by no means any kind of disrespect to TC and his work. TC is a great asset to our community and a true gentleman. Best Rolex products out there for the money in my humble opinion. This is my third TC watch and I have bought many other TC parts as well and will continue to do so. The moral of this story is…even when you design what is a simple plan/build things come up that increase costs, time, and effort to complete the project. This watch took about 5 months longer to complete and more $$ as well. I think she turned out great. The TC dial and hands are just outstanding. I used a genuine 116610 AR/Lec crystal which I know is not period correct, but like the way the date looks better with this crystal. Check out the DWO with this crystal. Genuine LV insert and a genuine 703 crown/tube. TC’s new LV insert is very good, but I had already sourced the gen before I had it in my hands. Just for fun I sourced a period correct genuine LV box set for the pics. I want to thank both Matt (mymanmatt) and Dbane for helping me with this project. Both are highly skilled professionals, but more so are just great people and folks I call friends. Matt assembled this watch twiceJ Phone pics:

  6. We are working on one of the newer Yuki 7206's to adapt the end piece set up to be similar to gen and so that will accept 2mm bars. Also another issue with the stock Yuki is that the last link/rivets are too thick and hits the lugs on both a gen spec 5513 and 6538 cases. The way the end pieces attach to the last link does not provide enough clearance and also does not allow the bracelet to lay flat like gen. I worked on mine but lacked the tools and materials to finish the idea I had to make it work, so sent it to a friend who has more experience and talent with these type of mods. Once I get it back, I will write up the process....if it works. I ended up buying a gen 7206 but still thought this would be a valuable contribution to the community if we can get it to work correctly.

  8. Be very careful that when you re-lume, it doesn't look like boobs... Real Tritium plots on 1680 dials are flat matte.

  9. Thanks for the support, and kind words guys, AJ has me covered, so he will be collecting me on the 5th of May next week, and shooting me up the motorway in his Aston Dashcam would be good, may need that radar in action too. I have used up all my "post likes" in this thread alone.

  14. Micky, I am sad to hear this. Though I do not have any repairs with you, I am sure that everyone here that does knows 100% that you are trustworthy enough to never even think of making up an excuse like this to buy time. Best of luck to you and your family in this hardship, and if there is anything that I can do for you over here across the pond, let me know (as limited as it may be). Best, Uber

  16. 702. Most Red's I've seen have 702's on them. Same DNA as the 700 + an Extra Gasket. 700's I see on early/mid 60's 5513 and Tudor Subs

  18. Thanks! I am beyond excited. Watching this come together, learning from mistakes, trying some of the mods myself, selecting the pieces, working with these genuine craftsman we have here in our community... it's all made it truly very special. For what is typically, if found, a $35,000 to $40,000 watch I will have the same (pretty damn close) for a good bit under $5k. I couldn't have done it without you guys, and also seeing many other members immaculate builds that egged me on to do better. I'll post pics as soon as it's back together.

  21. There are no good out of the box bulbs. All different versions have their flaws. Either you decide what you can live with most, or you send the bulb around to 10 different forum modders before you install it. You don't want to get called out when you light up.

  22. Can't say that I've ever felt that way. I've owned a few Gens over the years and at 33 years old, I still feel a Rep is the best Value. First of all, I wear all of my watches. No matter the experience or situation. I just feel naked without one. If I've forgotten to put it on before I leave the house, I'll turn around and go back. Even if I just drove 10-15 minutes down the road. It's excessive I know, but it's my passion. Secondly, I have bashed a few gens, scratched them, broke the crowns off, etc...... I am clumsy with a watch sometimes. I've paid hundreds, if not thousands in repairs on gens. Thirdly, acquiring a Gen, depending a lot on career movement, either took a few months to save, or trading high priced items like, guns, motorcycles or even a car or two. Living in places like California and Las Vegas enabled me access to a multitude of willing people to buy, sell or trade this way. The upkeep is a nightmare. First of all finding a competent watch smith. Then dealing with a repair that the manufacturer required original sales documents just to provide the part the watch needed proved to be more of a headache. I'm not one to walk into a boutique and buy retail. All of my gens were acquired in the 2nd hand market as stated above. So, my take, and what I'm fully comfortable with is, to hell with Gens. Now, I get to spend a few hundred rather than trading a few thousand dollars worth of items and or cash. And if it breaks, to the garbage you go. More than likely I had it for at least a 3 years and for me, I've never spent more than $300 on a rep anyway. So, $100 a year on a watch to discard, is pinto beans to me. Besides, I like buying from here. The members. I've come across a few great deals and haven't been disappointed yet. Although, some of you are super, uber passionate that I would ignore most details that would drive the others crazy. I love watches. Plain and simple. They are works of art. For me, a beautiful rep is more than enough in both a financial standpoint and a sanity stand point. I understand business and marketing to a degree that is sickening. I have many a fellow colleagues in the accessories industry from Salesmen, account managers, boutique managers and so on. The manufacturing processes are reasonably similar. For the sake of argument at least, minor differences exist. It all boils down to, The Name. How much was spent on advertising and marketing, the availability of super precious metals and stones. (Which in itself is a travesty of how that's going on. Think of diamonds) Workforce salaries, and blah blah blah. It's all about money. In the grand scheme of things, that $10,000 Gen is about 35-65 % markup relative to ACTUAL whole sale cost of materials and processes. Plus, the fact that the piece will never depreciate, because of The Name. Good for them. Gens are fascinating. Absolute unimaginable to think of every detail that went into a piece from conception to birth. Without question, impeccable materials of the highest quality. Designs such as the Tourbillon that boggle the mind. Gens have a following just as loyal as the Reps do. If / When Reps become rarer and more expensive, or harder to come by, I'll then reevaluate my love of Reps and might swing into Gens as also a way of investment. Furthermore, YES!!! Please liquidate your collections. May you find piece of mind in which ever side you choose to stay or venture off to. The End.
