From the outside, it appears complete... And it nearly is. It's a usable piece that can be worn, keeps good time, looks the business... But I still need to replace the JLC movement currently inside with the proper caliber V454... Not a detail that anyone would really see since it's behind a closed caseback, but... I know. And that's why it has to be Thanks for looking!1 point

A lot of pictures here to share two recent builds featuring two excellent Vietnam made dials. The quality of these dials is getting better ever month !!! Look at the shape of the subdials on the big red. And the crisp print on the PN. Both watches are cartel based, with all reshaped cases, Vietnam inserts and genuine service T21 crystals. What you can get for less than the price of a used V72 alone !!! I sincerely doubt you can get any closer to gen on such a budget.1 point

Just wait to see it with the dial that's coming to me ... though that watch still has many flaws and the insert is damaged I really think it will look really better from where I started. Plus it will tick and keep good time (I have regulated the movement ... which is not so bad). If my father in law had just given it to me I would certainly have put it in a drawer and forget about it. But it's a "souvenir" from about 15 years ago, when he was still fit (he was 61 and he's 76), so it's important for him even if it's a cheap watch. And making it tick again and look better was important for me (I really like this guy). Plus that was a good exercice to know where I could "push the limits" of my skills. This winter, when I'll have finished with the TON of projects I have, I will work on another watch of him, something much better but which is, surprisingly, not has important. It's Porsche Design Military by Orfina (Gen) ... a nice watch but a bit damaged.1 point

"...now I need someone who can service and ETA 2893-2 GMT movement." The 2893 is probably just about as easy as an eta 2824/36 to work on but many (including me) are not overly familiar with them. I have a few 2892 and even spent the $$ on a rotor bearing tool but that is as far as it went. What this means is most of the repair guys on RWG are probably like me...not as familiar with a 2892/3 as an eta 2824/36. Ask around, I'm sure someone can help. "...I feel that I should drop all the reps I have and go Gen. Also my beloved MBW 1665 which has a 1570 movement inside now it will not change dates." This will be an easy fix. It is a 50+ year old design, very easy to work on, and the date works only have about a dozen parts. The only problem is parts if you need anything...expen$ive and sometimes hard to find. Two common problems are worn reversers and rotor axles so be sure to have them checked, and a new mainspring is good insurance. Probably be a good idea to have it completely c/o while it is half way apart, taking care to properly oil the mainspring barrel arbor on both ends and thoroughly clean and properly oil the balance jewels, escape wheel jewels and pallet stones. The autowind assembly is very easy to c/o and it can be done in a half hour or so...just a few parts. When one of my 'mechanical marvels' takes a dump, I put my trusty Accutron II back on.1 point

You have far more patience than me? The one thing it does show is how far reps have come and how lucky we are. I still have a couple of Shitinerand Rolex from about twenty years ago. One is a 1016 I am still rather fond of and one is a 1680/5517/5514 crossbreed that is just plain embarrassing1 point

That's an other special one made for a tue afficionado of unique pieces... Case started as a cartel 5513. From an old batch: lots of oddities in the details but after considering what could be done out of it the 6541 appeared to be a smart choice. The case was slimmed down, and more difficult: it was modified on the inside to accept the gen specs milgauss dial much larger than a sub dial. Bezel was crafted from a cartel 1655, and case back too. It was was shaved low done, almost flat. What can't be seen here is the movement retaining ring. The 2824 it held into a custom made pill box style brass ring clipped onto the movement. pretty much like the genuine. So the mount is very tidy, and the movement well protected inside. I will post some pics of the making afterwards...1 point

Swiss ETA is good, Chinese watch with Swiss ETA for premium price over Chinese ETA clone, generally bad. Because of supply issues, these are usually old, dirty movements, repaired with any mix of secondhand and Chinese parts and not worth the price. Unless there is no option for the watch you are interested in, always buy the Chinese version. If you wish, fitting a Swiss movement at a later date is a straight swap and if you source your own movement at least you know it is new or a used unit in good condition.1 point

Hello, I'm new to the Panerai scene, having previously been a fan of the Rolex Submariner range. Are there any stand-out, high grade, low volume manufacturer(s) of Panerais that use gen construction that are made to a very high standard, like the TC Submariner? N00b seems to be the most common version I've come across so far. Apologies if this is a bit of a noob question. Thanks1 point
