  2. I received the noobmariner I ordered from watchwoot/D4ME today and thought I'd give my first impressions. The watch feels good and quite substantial, fit and finish seem to be very nice - good attention to detail. The only thing that detracts from the item is the band/bracelet. It feels rather cheesy, flimsy, and rather rattly - but, considering the price point of the watch everything can't be perfect and I'm told even plagues the gen version. I have read that a lot of the reps have a bezel insert that is not properly "sunk" into the bezel, the fit of this insert seems very good to me and only stands a couple thou proud of the metal bezel - really only noticeable under magnification. One thing that might make some feel better is no engraving on rehaut. I remember reading posts with grumblings about the "new" version having the incorrect engraving. I am by no means anything other than a "noob" but I feel this is a great watch for the money. Here are a couple of pics:

  3. SSD and noob are falling by the wayside to BK/WM9 pieces. Consider a budget friendly shootout, in the $250 or less range. It could be said, these two watches can still be respectable with simply a watchmaterial pearl and a once over to the crown guards. -The SSD (latest,v2). The only real gripe I hear is rehaut. WM9's 16600 is around the bend, but a handful of bills more. With a lite version available of the SSD for a mere $128, and a DG4813 movement running $30 or so, theres a lot to be had for a little $$$. -The noobmariner. Once the pinnacle, now underwhelming in the shadow of BK's WM9v2. How does it stack up against the SSD? A little less expensive, even with an all but mandatory asian ETA or DG4813 upgrade. I've been thinking about this to myself for the past two days, now i'm just plain talking to myself. Please, discuss!

  4. Just received my 6 year-old (long out of warranty) A80 back from Canon service (10 days from the day I shipped it to the day it arrived back at my door, repair cost (including shipping both ways) = 0 - Canon's customer service is truly AMAZING!!!!!!!!!) Of course, my (4MP & non-IS) p&s cannot match the succulent dof I get from its bigger (slr) brother mated to a Contax/Zeiss lens, but I still find the images it produces to be more than adequate (& often brilliant) (All hand-held in Auto/Macro mode & sharpened/re-sized only) All in all, this camera takes more pleasing pictures (much less noise/color fringing) than either the SX10IS or G10 did. Newer clearly does not always translate to better.

  5. Shure a Patak or Lange is worth every cent of what you pay but a Sub that costs 500 bucks to make is way over priced IMO. I don't know how much a Swiss Watchsmith puts into one either. Most of the job is machine done. They don't hand make cases and such on a sub and who knows how much is hand done on the MVT. Prob not much. Col.

  6. I just looked at my profile for the first time in a long time and saw that my "Reputation" is -1 neutral. Anybody know what this means? I mean, I'm sure I deserve it for hurting somebody's ego feelings but I have no idea what it was that I did or to whom. Can anyone enlighten me?

  7. Hi, First post, great site btw, now i see the difference from reps and fakes lol I have been lurking in the background for a couple of days now, reading endlessly, information overload lol, I currently have a genuine Omega PO 42mm which i would love to wear everyday but it would only get ruined at work, hence why i started looking for a rep, so it can take the knocks and scuffs, after some reading i found that the 42mm stopped with 4th gen, now we're on to the UPO but in only 45mm, until i came across www.pam111.com and www.eurotimez88.com both selling a 5th gen 42mm, would this be a ULTIMATE PO in 42mm?, could someone be kind enough to point out the flaws / difference from these and the 4th gen. Im not being lazy, but currently have 9 tabs open in explorer on various pages, my heads about to explode trying to take everything in , basically im after the best rep 42mm i can get my hands on, oh and then narikaa throws a spanner in the works with these http://www.rwgforum.com/topic/103014-planet-ocean-fest/page__hl__42mm%20po%20__fromsearch__1 thanks narikaa lol also these 5th gen, says there 42.5mm, would oem parts fit i.e. bezel, dial, maybe even sapphire crystal HELP a newbie please thanks in advance Neil

  8. I'm a noob to reps.... I'll bring info from what I know. I am a pen fanatic. I have thousand... heck, i could buy at least two or three new submariners and daytonas for what I have in just Montblanc limited editions. Here is the problem. Above 2k...they live on my desk. 1k and under, I'll carry and use... But, the ones I'll use daily...the $500 and under used purchases, ones I have rehabilitated myself... ah, these are what I love. BECAUSE a scratch...ok...character. apply this to reps.... get a watch, use it. if I had a 10k watch, i would not be able to watch it, wear it to work on my bike 20 miles a day... just couldn't. I can afford any of this. I've worked my rear end off .... but the thought of having a watch that i can use that is "typical" of my colleagues, but I can play with my kid with while wearing it...that is piece of mind. my own plug, always looking for friends, aids, people to make mods for me.... let me know your thoughts.

  9. One other thing -- while nobody is likely to ever "call me out," I shall share with you the perfect answer: "I dunno, I took it off a dead guy." Considering the activities and associates of my younger days, that is rather believable. Bill

  10. You're absolutely correct, I think the problem, is the R-Word. It's success is also it's undoing. The name is almost universally recognized, but, it is also universally linked to replication, so to the uninitiated, Rolex either = Super Rich, or, it = Fake, with no middle-ground, due to the misconception that Rolex watches are 'the best of the best' in terms of 'expensive watches' (which is of course totally false, but, it is the public perception of the brand... Another aspect which I think people forget, is how long an item can potentially last. For example, a pair of designer frames for eye-glasses can cost a lot of money, but, given the average 12 month lifespan of a pair (after that, it really is worth having the prescription checked, and possibly altered) when the cost is broken down to how much it costs on a daily basis, it is probably still cheaper than buying daily disposable contact lenses, and much less than people might spend on other vices like cigarettes, coffee or alcohol on a daily/weekly basis. Given that there are vintage Subs still in existence from the 50s, it's reasonable to expect a modern Sub to be equally functional in 50 years time, and, if a young man was to buy a Sub in his early twenties (such as a friend of mine who is a Royal Navy submariner) in theory, he need never buy another watch in his lifetime. When viewed from that perspective, the cost of the watch breaks down very reasonably. Of course, without corporate greed, that retail price could still be considerably cheaper (and that's where Reps come in

  11. Hey, Interesting topic and i will have a go at replying quickly... I never wear my reps in public only have them to look at and play with, now i am selling out of reps all together and sticking with my gen rollies. Why you might ask? well my views on this have changed recently after reading a few articles and becoming a bit more informed. I also recently read about cartel involvement in the manufacture of replica handbags, shoes and watches and the human rights issues that go along with them. Children forced to work, mothers, daughters and older people forced to work for little pay and punishment. The rep industry supports some of the most violent and ruthless criminals in the world and all for what? so we can feel a bit better about ourselves wearing a "faux" rolex or whatever the brand? It is plain selfish and a movement i do not want to be part of anymore. So if you can't afford a 10 or 20 grand watch buy what you can afford and don't pretend to be someone your not, you are only selling out yourself. On a second note, i have a leased cls63 amg, doesn't mean i can't afford it but for tax purposes it works out better Idiots buy cars outright (unless its a collector e.g. rolls royce).... Most heavily depreciating items known to man.

  12. When did i claim i had anything better than you? That aside you are intimating a gen is no better than a rep!!!! Just like a replica ferrari is as good as the real deal, well at least the rep owner will tell you that. I have bought both gen and reps and am now more comfortable with just gens nothing more nothing less, personal preference. So if YOU deduce that i think i am better than you i think you need to have a major rethink.

  13. I respect your opinion but from my older university days i think you value different sets of product attributes when searching for a product. You associate with the brand but don't want to pay the price as you don't perceive quality and value for money. That is fair enough and you are probably satisfying your basic needs (maslow= safety, physiological while still achieving your esteem needs)... Also was in no way twisting your words to support my case, simply stating the facts as you present them. To some 7 grand is not that much for a watch that will last 10 or 20 years and still have value at the end of that period. Gens hold their value and in some cases appreciate, a rep is still a rep no matter how "super" it is. Don't take me the wrong way but i have enjoyed reps and don't hold any grudges towards people who wear them. This post below is great and worthy of a +1
