actually, I went to watchschool back in sydney and we were taught to work on a 6497 first. I think the purpose was to demostrate how the parts correspond with eachother in more detail - so that is why bigger was better at the time. However, i agree with the others that smaller will help u to work with finesse and delicacy. Good luck with either one, i'm sure u'll get the hang of it.

i'm thinking that the rep crown and tube are not made very well. From what i gather, the crown tube is internally threaded - like the genuine. Unfortunately, it is most likely not made very well.

I'm not sure what to suggest as i feel other ones will have the same problem.

In fact, that is not always the case.

I have a genuine tag heuer with crystal sapphire, and when i do the water bead test, it "fails" and spreads.

I feel that it is a combination of shape of the crystal and quality that produces these "pass" or "fail" occurences. I for one, feel that it is not always correct. It is more likely that a domed crystal will have this beading effect, while a flat crystal will always spread.

the green/blue putty? from any watch supplies - Ofrei has some.

One thing i notice is that the date is at 6' oclock. You will need to switch out the datewheel for a D3 datewheel if you are putting it in a daydate. That is, if everything else is a perfect fit.

To answer some of the questions:

The watch diameter is approx 40mm without the crown.

The movement was from a donor Omega watch that I picked up for a decent price. I saw a serviced 552 movement and it went for around $180...which is way too high - guess its supply and demand.

To PAMman and Ubi, thanks guys, I was trying to get rid of the stubbies (thats why its noticable on some lume markers but not on others) but i decided to do it later. In regards to the caseback - I'm going to see if i can get a hold of a used one, and the word "CERTIFIED" is spelt wrong on mine, its spelt "CERTIFED" haha.

I may just polish down the caseback near the 'A' and 'FED' area to get rid of those issues.

What annoys me is the dark yellow tinge to the bezel markers - they look bad and out of place but oh well.

Have you tried the BAY? there are always sellers selling genuine omega dials - i see seamasters/railmaster/constellations from the current models from time to time.

I'm just waiting on the movement which will come this week. I got the bezel to lume up, so i'm pretty happy.

Pictures by the end of the week, i promise.

This project wasn't cheap - I may be able to make one more if anyone is interested.

i can't be bothered with this anymore, i'm not buying it, i couldn't care less.

There is probably only 1 or 2 members on this board that has actually gotten a hold of the legendary SMP and they are probably inactive now. So i guess people should just take your word for it.....

Well Paul and King are still offering the Black SMP with the correct Helium release valve. The black SMP has pretty much always had the HEV in the correct place - its only the blue SMP that has it right on 10 o clock.

Like i said, its between you and longshot, its up to him whether he feels that the watch has been advertised correctly. I feel that longshot will have his own judgements on this situation so i'll stop posting in this thread now.

btw, length on the board and post counts means nothing to me, I run a entire search from the time the forum started to try and know everything there is to know about a certain model - thats why i've been so persistent on this topic, with no disrepect to you of course.

Firstly, I want to make it clear that i'm not here to pick a fight. This transaction is between you and longshot, it really shouldn't be any of my business. However, the watch that you have advertised "from the old closed factory" isn't quite right. I think longshot and the rest of us who have read this thread believe that the watch is from the 'LEGENDARY CLOSED FACTORY" where the watch is pretty much identical. Before i go any further, if you can tell us all that this watch is maybe from a recent closed factory (because the SMP sold now all have short hands), then i will withdraw what i'm stated and I will apologise for causing such drama.

However, if you still insist that it is from the Legendary closed factory, then you should read on.

I have attached 3 photos of legendary closed factory Black SMP. These pictures are from Palpatine from the old RWG. Notice the SERIAL on the backcase, I have gotten a picture of yours:

Notice the crown is different, I know Palpatine hasn't changed the crown out because its still externally threaded, which means its the rep crown.

One more thing, these legendary SMPs had ETA 2892 or copy 2892 in them, not 2824.

And with regards to how i know so much about your watch, its because i got the same model - my black SMP was based off model as yours.

by the way, I've been around a long time - you can look me up on the old RWG - look at my joining day and look at your joining day - surprised?

anyway, I don't mean any harm, just doing what the forum does best, informing members of watches. Please let me know if i'm mistaken with anything.

If you really can't get a hold of them, wait till i get back to sydney in May as i'm getting a whole bunch of replacement parts from my supplier.

a word of advice, always ask the watchmaker what experience he has. My local mall watchmaker back in sydney had over 30 years of experience and has worked on all the big brands - only then can you feel safe.

Never give your watch to those do-it-all shops, where they fix shoes/fix watches....they have no experience and bare knowledge on watch repair.

trust me when i say get that pusher replaced and give it a good clean, that watch looks like its in good condition, just needs a service and some parts replaced.

Hate to say this, but that aint from the closed factory, reasons why?

1. The pearl is nothing like the old factory model.

2. The date font on the old model was the same as the genuine - from your pics, thats the wrong date font.

3. The crown doesn't look like the old factory either.

So unless the seller has changed out all the good parts and replaced them with mediocre parts, that isn't from the old closed factory. And when i say old closed factory, i'm talking about the legendary ones that are almost identical to the real thing, which also has a 8 digit serial near the lug.

Update us, I hope i'm wrong, but i'm pretty good with Omegas and i know the quality of the old legendary factory models.

Good thread! I'm having precisely the same dilemma - the rep strap is nasty, it's looks thin and varnished. More importantly, it's just not right for that watch.

But what to pick!

im glad i'm not the only one suffering from this strap issue. It doesnt fit my wrist that well either, so definitely time to get another, let me know when you get a new strap, and i'll do the same. I'm thinking maybe dark brown....padded...its gotta be thick - the one that came with the watch is too thin.
