  1. ....

Installed the dial, hands, stem and crown and left it in the movement holder without the rotor. I wound it 30 easy winds, noted the time, noted the second hand and the date set, covered it in glass. At a little more than 48 hours it was one second fast, and I hadn't tried to regulate it yet. It finally stopped at 58½ hours. Needless to say I am pleased!

But is that sort of reserve, and instant reaction to any vibration 'normal' for a fully cleaned and pressed movement? It wouldn't make sense if it was just the ETA2846 that works so well, basically it's a slow beat 2836. But it beats my ETA 2893-2 that was purchased new by 10 hours, but has less complications for sure. Could that be the reason? I plan on converting this movement to be GMT and put it in my 6542 because of the slow beat, but now too because it has that 'sentimental' value that I did it! Maybe someone can tell me what I did right so I can do it again!

After I completed the TZ Watch School, I went thru a phase of skill building where I bought a bunch of 2846 powered Octo's. Did the COMPLETE teardown, "Pro"Ultrasonic Clean, One-Dip Balance, and lube and rebuild.

Out of curiosity, is yours a 17 jewel or 21 jewel?

    To your questions and observations:

1.) Don't be fooled by it "ran for 58 hours". Unless you had "eyes on it" for the final 10 hours after you observed it @ 48 -- chances are its timekeeping went out the window, slowing greatly over its final hours/minutes. They don't run for 58 hours of perfect timekeeping and just STOP. So if you were sleeping, then checked it the next morning and came up with the 58 hours, that is not an accurate measure of reserve. Also, slow beat tend to run a bit longer.

2.) Zigmeister might be able to clarify my next speculation. From my 'subjective' experience, watches with less jewels, or too little lube tend to have less friction and start up easy, and may even have an extended reserve.

3.) Why convert the 2846 to a GMT, when the DG3804 is already a slow beat GMT movement with correct hand stack and good DW alignment? IF only for the reason it is "Swiss" it seems like a lot of extra work.

Overall sounds like you have a good movement.

  2. As to the original question: no I don't think the increasing accuracy of the reps will cause too many ripples in the second-hand gen world. Outside of this forum I don't think too many 'Ristis even realize how scary-good the reps are getting. Since Paneristi actively suppresses any and all talk of reps, their own knowledge of the subject is lacking. I would venture that your average user here could ID a rep with greater accuracy than your average gen-forum-dweller.

Good points. However, as an example, I have a Gen Exp II white face. IF it were ever repped to the point of some of these new PAM reps with correct hand stacks, dial accuracy, etc..... I WOULD be tempted to sell my GEN, put ~$4000+ towards another new GEN, after spending $300 on the super rep to replace it. Case in point if I had poneyd up $9000 for a 2010 PAM 029, I would be pissed, and probably dump it. YMMV.

I think the GEN forums are doing their membership a discredit to censor REP vs GEN comparisons. Knowledge is power to someone really looking to buy and collect said GEN watches. Sure, you might loose some % of Gen buyers to Reps when they see the light, but still, freedom of information could be a valuable asset. Then again, the first rule of Rep Club is you do not talk about Rep club, so having their fake discussion bans is probably in our best interest.

  3. You replaced the crystal right? Is it GEN, or Aftermarket.

If the entire ring is lifting off that easily, sounds like the crystal might be a bit thin walled.

Also, if you put the old parts back on, does it go back together? Finally, you can technically test fit the bezel to the retaining wring sans tension spring.

  4. Holy smokes!!! That whole site:www.rwg.cc thing needs to be a sticky. That's my new favorite thing!!!!

Yep, because without a 3 character search enabled here, the native forum search simply sucks... The native forum search either needs offloaded to something like "Lucene" (search feature found in WikiPedia), or at a minimum allow 3 character searches.

  5. First I'm hearing about wrist-check, never heard anything about it before? Was that site new? My interest is piqued now....is it any good...or was it any good?, guess we'll never know now!

Wrist-Check was a splintering of RepGeek. Wrist-Check is to RepGeek as RWG is to RWG1.1. I like it because-- like RWG it has "low noise" level. Now that it is invite only, it is kinda "exclusive".

RWG is still my home base.

  6. "Wrist-Check" just went invite only. Closed to the public. Interesting...

Mod's / Admins - You should also get up to speed on what happened to the "Homage Forum". A "Fake" litigation letter from Richmont via a disgruntled member created an interesting situation.

  7. I prefer not to. More hassle than it is worth IMHO - unless you own a perpetual calendar. Resetting that one is a bitch. :)

My winder is a godsend on my 1575 non-quick set date Rolex's, and 7753 powered Breitling Navitimer, plus a few other non-quicksets.

Yes, but most of the motors tend to wear out- in my experience. Now I have 6 total winders- 2 are working.

My AceTimer purchased in 1/2009 is still going strong.

  8. The 750's / 1200T modern DOXA's represent some kick-ass watches. Also, being a Ball Watch fan & Tritium Tube fan, the 800Ti is killer time piece.

Don't discount a modern DOXA as a quality daily watch. I dive with my 'modern' DOXA's but would no longer dive with my 1968 300T. The vintage is now more of a collectors item to me.
