  1. I warned everyone of this years ago. Cartier and LVMH train French customs to spot fakes and they also lobby the govt on counterfeit issues. It's mostly to do with Louis Vuitton bags, but they do watches too.

Threatening a fine of twice the value of the watch has zero legal basis. I would be outraged that they can even claim the authority to know whether a watch is a rep or not. And PANERAI is Italian/Swiss, not French. What a load of [censored], but I can imagine the French being retarded enough to try that.

Bags I can understand, but I would be impressed if they could pick a rep wristwatch from a metre away. I would love to take that course in rep detection, sign me up :)

  2. Reps are definitely a good way to test drive some different designs and styles, no doubt.

But they're also fun to play with.

I've learned more with reps than I ever would have with gens...

Agreed with everything here. And I'd also add that, having toyed with a few different watches, I've actually found what I like and what I don't like, and would be far less averse to spending decent money on a high quality gen. I wouldn't have been in the position to risk liking it long term if I wasn't sure it suited me, so I agree with the OP that I would say high quality reps actually drive gen sales that would not otherwise have been possible.

  3. if you're not planning to use QED to improve the lume in our reps (like trapping photons in lower quantum states while in sun light and discharging them in the shade), I'd say this information is not very relevant :)

The electrons would have to be in higher quantum states so that when they fall into lower quantum states (and therefore lose energy) which would spontaneously release a photon of the same energy as the change in quantum state.

Having established that, +10000, if it helps me get line this all day long, bring on the quantum electrodynamics!

  4. Opus was decent for a Cali cab, but there are far better below Opus' cost that drink much higher; check out Nickel & Nickel of Far Niente. Plus, any Opus over the last few years has gone down the toilet due to Rothschild & Mondavi selling off the estate & losing the winemaker they had from Mouton Rothschild...

Now THAT is a man who knows his wine :)

  5. It's actually a bastardised clock face but I think it's quite interesting. Will probably need to be about 37mm. Anyone know anywhere which will make up custom designs for you (I only want one).

Also, I'll be using a 6497, do you think it's ok to not have a seperate dial/markings at 9 o'clock but still have the second hand, or do you think it'd look a bit strange? Also could be too crowded to be able to be made into a watch dial, I'm not sure.

Hope some of this makes sense, I'm a total watch noob and never put anything together before really :), so any help is greatly appreciated! Also I'm aware that I have terrible taste, it's just a bit of fun :D

You can incorporate a mini dial for the seconds hand, it'll look cool! Same as the dial but reduced. A free second hand would look very out of place aesthetically.

  6. It is frustrating to see the obvious eyesores that could so easily be avoided.

The slide rule lines used to be all the way to the end on the dial side but not on the slide rule side. Now they fixed the slide rule but the dial is stuffed.

The Suuuuunken date wheel is an eyesore. What happened to the A7753? Did they run out after fitting them all into the Daylights? :op

Dial looks reasonable, but still suffers from some obvious issues. 2mm at 40mm is also a fairly large size deviation.

  7. If I buy a BOB strap when can I find a deployment buckle??

eBay for a 20mm Breitling style deployment/deployant (the proper word is deployant... A deployment means something entirely different :)

The straps are either 22 or 24mm atthe lugs, but they are all 20mm at the buckle. You'll work it out :)

  8. Where can you find good prices on Gen straps? Also, where to get the best crock strap from?

Where can you find good prices on Gen straps? Also, where to get the best crock strap from?

There is a very nice croc strap and gen deployant going at the moment in the straps section.

Also, some nice pieces come up on the 'straps and bracelets' forum, it's only a matter of time :)

  9. The provided link is to a reputable dealer we all would purchase from.

I have to commend you on a very stylish, sophisticated first choice for a rep. Usually people are after something very different as a first rep :)

    Good luck mate!

  10. Hey, I'm going diving for the first time in a few months, and I was thinking about getting a Sinn watch to take underwater with me whilst I search for sunken pirate booty.

I know that most water-resistance testing machines only go up to 3 or 5ATM. I'd probably only be going down 30m max, but figured I'd need to get it tested for well above that rating.

In theory the U1000, for example, can be safely used at 1000m below sea level (and was apparently tested at that depth), and considering the reps are made with gen like construction, do I have it right in saying that with all the necessary tweaks they should survive 10 or even 25% of that?

If yes, who can waterproof a watch for that type of resistance, and can they test it to 10ATM?

    Cheers!

Not to rain on your parade, but before you get an Open Water dive qualification you would be lucky if you got down more than 10 meters. 18 meters is the absolute maximum distance allowed with a PADI certification. Even dive instructors don't go down much past 25-30m for safety reasons, because it takes AGES to slowly resurface, otherwise you'll get the bends ;)

For diving, do what divers do and get yourself a Seiko Monster. It won't matter, you'll have a dive computer anyway, watches during diving are just for fun for us watch-lovers :)

  11. The one thing you can do, and IMO your best option, is to set up your account preferences over there so the automatic assistant will initiate a UPI dispute after four days with no payment. The good part about letting the process start through the assistant is that a buyer cannot give negative feedback while the process is ongoing. You just have to hope that he doesn't pay for it.

I've learned that if you start the UPI dispute manually, the buyer could still neg feedback you immediately.

That's some good advice, I'll look into that.
