It feels like a JlC day today for some reason

I guess Josh/Andrew just want to get a leg up on the (gen) competition. It is priced at $228 now (Wednesday), so I guess it is available for sale. Any takers?
-
Actually, worse than that, most of the original casebacks were removed by Rolex during normal servicing & tossed in the trash. So most have probably been quietly rusting away at the bottom of whichever public dump site 'serviced' the RSC that serviced each watch.

Time to break out the bubbly & celebrate! Congratulations, but the big question is -- Does it keep time?

Is $90 a fair price for a gen sub crown and tube?
freddy333 replied to Martyd3's topic in The Rolex Area
Possibly, but it depends on which crown/tube (size, model). -
Still looking pretty & maintaining COSC specs since it arrived in June

Hard to be sure with your dark pics & I have never seen a MBW SRSD, but it does not look like an MBW/MBK. That is not to say it is a bad watch or will not accept gen parts (check with Euro on that), but the dial & case do not look like they are MBW.

Ditto.

GMTIIC Owners - What is the state of your rep?
freddy333 replied to freddy333's topic in The Rolex Area
Actually, you may very well be hurting your watch by giving it those extra (unneeded) manual winds. You might read Ziggy's comments on the damage that can be caused by manually winding an auto-wind movement, which is especially relevant with watches containing a movement as finicky as that 1 is. And, that aside, I think you may be missing the whole point of having a winder in the 1st place. -
I got it several years ago (in 2000 I think) from a website that closed down a year or so after I got the watch. I have seen it pop up, once or twice, on 1 of our collector's sites, but only with the black dial.

JoJo, I LOVE that last shot with the bridge in the distance. Unfortunately, with the computer problems & all, I ended up missing the last day of summer. But here are my last outdoor pics, all taken within the past few weeks. I hope these will do And 1 from the beginning of summer

GMTIIC Owners - What is the state of your rep?
freddy333 replied to freddy333's topic in The Rolex Area
Just out of curiosity, why are you winding the watch prior to putting into & taking it out of the winder? -
Yes, the thread pitch is different. I have replaced 2 sets of the screw-type pushers in DWs & the holes were too large for the gens or Ofreis, which is why I retapped & fit the next larger size from Ofrei. Unlike the plain pushers, Ofrei's screw pushers were relatively more expensive, around $40/each, which was still alot less than Phong was selling them for at the time. The last time I saw a pair of NOS screw-type gens, they were just under $200/each. And nice to hear from you again, Avitt. Been awhile.
-
Yes, it is some type of fabric covering leather. It could be any of the above, but I do not know which.
-
Most of DWs pushers suck (but I believe he is working on getting a supply from Ofrei) & I always replace them with either gens (search ebay) or Ofreis (I have not purchased the screw types in over a year, so the design or Ofrei's supplier may have changed since then). Phong sells the same pushers Ofrei sells, but for 10 times the price. Be careful when replacing pushers in DWs, because I have noticed that some of the pusher holes were cut slightly too large. In these cases, I had to drill out the hole, retap & order a larger diameter pusher assembly from Ofrei. 1 of my DW torture stories (tutorials) describes the general problem & includes some micrometer pics. Search for my name & either 6239 or 6241.......I am pretty sure it was 1 of those.

Fantasy/Schmantasy. Not in this case. Here is a gen Master Reserve de Marche (my rep came with the same strap the gen is shown with, but the red Di-Modell's less formal look makes the watch more wearable with weekend wear)

I have to disagree with everyone on this. I would not have lied to someone like that (a person you may have some type of ongoing relationship with) in the 1st place. But, unfortunately, the deed has been done. Now, if the guy is the exception to the rule, he will applaud your sudden change of dishonesty & will appreciate your coming clean to him. But, more likely, he may accept your apology but forever view you with suspicion (especially in the case of his daughter). My advice would be to get a gen watch, which you will always wear when you meet anyone in that family (buy something old & unique that is likely to draw his attention (a vintage Longines would fit that bill nicely since some can be bought for well under a grand) & get him to inquire about it......that way, your conscience can be soothed because the last watch you told him was gen will have been a gen). And never wear any of your rep watches (especially the rep you told him was a gen) around them again. Or, if/when you start dating his daughter, sit him down & have a heart-to-heart chat. On the other hand, I have to wonder if Dad's collection may be all or mostly reps as well. It is very odd for a (non-RWG member) gen collector to own (or admit to owning) a rep -- Swiss or otherwise. It never ceases to amaze me how many people who drive high end luxury cars & live in palatial estates own reps. And, believe it or not, alot of the same 'super reps' we see here are also being advertised in hundreds of thousands of spam emails that go out to the general public on a daily basis. Do the math.
-
I think it was just under 9 grand. $8,975 maybe? All things considered, it seemed reasonably priced (for a Rolex). But it sounded like Rolex had learned its lessons well from the SS Daytona. The SDDS will be available, according to the store, 'in very limited quantities for the foreseeable future'. So the price you actually pay, assuming you can actually get your hands on 1, may be higher.

Choose a genuine (gen) watch model that you would like to buy as a replica (rep). Then go to your local authorized dealer (AD) & look at & try the gen watch on. Get used to the way it looks & feels on your wrist. Operate the controls (wind the watch, set the time, etc.). When you get home, visit the gen maker's website & download as many pictures of the gen watch as you can (go to google & find more). If you need to, make a 2nd or 3rd trip to the AD to get to know the gen watch. Then, when you are good & familiar with the gen, start searching through the collectors' websites listed on RWG (our site) to find the rep that has the least objectionable mistakes (to you). That is the only way to find the 'perfect' rep for you. Oh, & welcome.
-
Try a Patek Philippe 5107 Or a Jaeger leCoultre Master Reserve (at left) Mine is about 5 years old & came with a standard metal caseback. If you are worried about passing your rep as a gen, ask the seller to swap the clear caseback for the standard laCoultre metal caseback that looks something like this

Beggining of the Week Wrist Check 9 - 01,02
freddy333 replied to lanikai's topic in General Discussion
With the computer put (mostly) back together, I needed something to get my mind off the past week. So this today -
The clasp, along with the rest of the watch, is a technological marvel, which is why I want 1 (not to wear, just to fill in the slot in 1 of my watch cases). I did not fiddle with the clasp beyond opening & closing it to put the watch on my wrist, but many articles (many online) have been written about the clasp if you need more info.

A beauty, but not a 'Paul Newman'. Not meaning to pick on you, but more & more people are beginning to refer to these standard Daytonas as 'Newmans', which are identified by their unique ('exotic') font & small, square boxes in the subdials. The 6239 through 6265 series Daytonas were available with either dial as an option. However, most customers felt the Newman dial looked funny & opted for the standard dials, which is why Newmans are so rare today.
