  1. Ziggy, both are amazing little machines, but that Elgin is similar to 1 of the 1st pocket watches I ever took apart (I started on pocket watches before wrist watches). A real beauty. When they say 'They don't make them like that anymore', I think they had that Elgin in mind.
  2. Interesting, but not a color I would choose or 1 that I think is a very good match for the watch.
  3. Still living the dream today (Saturday)
  4. If you buy 3 or more watches at the same time, you can sometimes negotiate a few additional percent off.
  5. Bezel (the insert & T116 are the same in both pics - the only difference is the bezel). Please vote ONLY if you are familiar with the genuine Rolex GMT Master 6542. A B
  6. If you have either a genuine or Vietnamese-made (NDTrading, J&W, etc.) GMT Master 6542 case, please PM me.
  7. I have always had good luck with a dry bar of soap, but I would bet that candle wax works too. I have a leather Orbita travel case that works well, but the watches lie flat in the case (I think they make a similar 4-watch case) You can probably find something that will work for you here.
  8. Because enough people are willing to pay that much. I am not excusing their (& others') excessive pricing, I am just answering your question.
  9. If the seller cannot help you, try ofrei.com or cousinsuk.com. Most of the screws & pins are just standard off-the-shelf aftermarket parts.
  10. Love those Tudor-powered 7928s.
  11. Ditto. Since early July, when the following pic was taken, my chs has gained about 30 seconds. Not bad for a 'fake' Rolex But, today (Friday), I am living the dream of my last motorcycle adventure with my beater Tonight, I think the Longines & I will be painting the town red.......or gold Some nice metal on display here today, gents
  12. Ok, so we are sort of talking apples (steel plain bezel) & oranges (gold fluted). The fluted bezels have a lower profile than the plain bezel, but I believe there are different fluted bezels for sapphire crystals vs acrylic & the difference may be due to the lower height of the sapphire crystal. Since I do not work on modern Datejusts, I do not have any details. Hopefully, someone with more experience with the modern & gold versions will be able to chime in. If not, definitely worth posing this question on TZ.
  13. Are you sure that, except for the steel/gold changeover, you are swapping gen-for-gen & same model/version parts for same model/version parts? If the gold bezel sits lower than the steel bezel, something does not sound right. And are you sure you have the right tube for that version of the crown (600 vs 603, 701 vs 703, etc.)? That is usually where you run into problems fitting a crown through a tube. The only fix I know of is to ream out the tube. As for the bezel/crystal, I would check your parts to be sure you have the correct pieces before shaving anything down. Can you be more specific as to which DJ model you are working on? Which gold bezel? Fluted, flat, etc.?
  14. 1974 - This is a picture of me (that my then girlfriend made into a cup that sits on my desk) with my trusty Benrus strapped into a 2" black leather strap (Note the original tie-dye 'hippie' backdrop)
  15. Both approaches are equally valid, but I side with Ubi on this 1. Many 30+ year old gens are routinely serviced by Rolex, which sends them back to their owners looking nearly, if not literally, new. The owner then starts the 'wear' clock all over again on the watch & I like that idea. So most of my vintage rebuilds are to RSC quality & then I get to put my 'mark' on them.
  16. As usual, another excellent review.
  17. Try ST Dupont
  18. You can occasionally find Rolex buckles on ebay. The item above is an aftermarket version. Below is a gen (at left with a red strap) next to a different aftermarket version (at right with a black strap) The cost of the steel gen can vary (depending on condition & seller) between $120-$300. The cost of the steel aftermarket is usually between $25-$40 on ebay.
  19. Ditto. There are a number of pictures of Paul Newman wearing the 6241 watch that is named after him with 1 of these wide, black leather straps. They were cool in the early 70s when everyone was walking around with long hair & brown suede leather coats with fringe, but I think they look a little silly this time around (today).
  20. That is alot of cleaning. Even my beater, which I have worn for most of the past year, has only been cleaned a handful of times when I got it greasy or dirty while working with it on. Do you sweat alot or apply some type of lotion on a daily basis? If so, then you just have to clean the bracelet on a regular basis as you are doing. A number of people on TZ swear by 'Scrubbing Bubbles' spray cleaner (available at most supermarkets & home stores). I always clean my steel in an ultrasonic, so I cannot vouch for SB's effectiveness on a metal watch bracelet. But it works pretty well on bathroom sinks & tubs
  21. Thanks. It is such an excellent camera that I hated to hang it up, but digital is so much easier than film. I do keep it around for an occasional gamble.
  22. jc - That was very nice of you to give your father a PP rep. But I have never seen such a thing as a perfect rep, especially a few-hundred dollar rep that was fashioned to replicate the fit & finish of a $15k+ hand-made PP. And, frankly, as I read this I could not help thinking to myself, 'Why does it surprise him that his father never wears the rep?'

Too bad about the cam, that is the only Tudor I like & would love to see more of it. Did you build it or is it 1 of Phong's?

Laz - That will be a trip well worth making. Excellent work.
  25. Thanks, but I prefer closed casebacks. Unless the watch is a gen Lange or Patek (or similar), there is little worth removing your watch for.
