  1. They are a little part of what I do :)

You seem talented with movement disassembly and servicing and have good working knowledge about the non chrono movements, going by your posts. Which means, that you're an asset to the community. Are you offering your services professionally? :)

  2. I guess it is quite subjective but generally comparable. Thanks for the insights. Interesting on the Panarai that I have always seen it as more of a top end brand based on who I have seen wearing them ( lawyers and corporate financiers) and the scarcity of them in South Africa and in Legends country they are working mans watches! . Geography and culture also seem to play a role in brand identity.

In SA a entry level car costs R100k ($10k) many mid range watches mentioned above cost a lot more here!

Yes, countries play a large part too in this discussion of association.

I live in Singapore where incomes are generally higher, but where cars are notoriously expensive given the government controlled vehicle bidding and ownership system.

A toyota altis (or corolla) would cost about US$85k, an Audi A4 could cost about US$185K, a Porsche 911 C2S would cost about US$520k.. go figure..

Panerais and Omegas are commonly seen on the wrists of bank executives (mid level I guess) and the bosses and senior executives wear anything from rolex to APs, assuming that they are into watches.

When I first started working, I bought my first Panerai (a 104) within six months, and it cost me about $5,500.00 then. The guys around me started wearing Panerai, and that was when I sold mine and moved on to Hublot and APs gradually. Right now, I only buy replicas when it comes to Panerais, I find them accurate enough on the wrist and I wear them as my casual watches. That was why I would not ever associate Panerai with Lamborghini, but thats highly personal.

Perhaps in your country, Panerais would tell a different story and project a different image. Nothing wrong at all with that mate.   ;)

  3. Nice of you to quote me on this Mr.A LOL... The gold that we harvest is platinum-titanium-diamond like-gold. If anyone kidnaps me, the only thing they'd get is a suplex by Mr.A. He promised the safety and well-being of his dear friends ;)

This was hilarious. Thanks OP & Mr.A

MICROSCOPIC CHISEL AND HAMMER TO GET THE ENGRAVING DONE!!! LOL!! WHAT A GENIUS!! LOL

    :D

    there you are moneybags.

Do you think that was a satire video? ;)

  4. AP - Porsche (RO and ROO is the 911 equivalent)

Richard Mille - Pagani (very exclusive, use of special materials)

Christophe Claret - Koenigsegg (high and innovative complication)

Rolex - Mercedes (large range of product from low to high)

    Breitling - Jaguar

    Zenith - Corvette

    Panerai - Lexus

    Hublot - Lamborghini (materials usage)

Omega - Toyota (high number of watches/cars produce each year)

Tissot - GM (high number of watches/cars produce each year)

    IWC - BMW

    Breguet - Maserati

JLC - Audi (high complications for JLC compare to Audi technology)

    Blancpain - Lotus

Casio - Hummer (g-shock are tough)

    Tag Heuer - VW

    Patek - Ferrari

    Vacheron - Bentley

    Lange - Rolls Royce

    Smartwatches - Tesla

  5. Stop pretending bro we all know this is you ;)

Trying to be a rolex guru :D

    It can't be me bro.

I was wondering why he would say the movement is platinum gold when its obviously gold harvested from the exotic mines in Indonesia, owned by the family of member @folex, who by the way is the guy to kidnap if you guys want to make a quick buck to buy gen rolex effortlessly.

  6. I guess it's a bit of both :-) . But am very keen to see if my perceptions are correct as I have no where near the kind of experience or expertise that the seasoned veterans here have. I know I understand car brands better than watch brands so matching them helps me put the watch brands into better perspective. Your comments on the Panerai are a perfect example and has already changed my perception of that brand

    Cheers

No worries, you have made reasonably fair observations .

We're all here to learn and share and of course you would understand that such associations are pretty subjective. I'm inclined toward APs and Hublots and being familiar with their relative price level vs other brands, I would have to say that I associate APs with Porsches quite a fair bit. In my country, the working class of men tend to wear panerai a lot, so I see them as fairly affordable and common. I would associate the average Panerai with Audi at best.

In terms of models, Rolex can also be associated with Porsches given the fact that vintage models for both are valuable among collectors. I would also associate Rolex with Mercedes given the "classic premium brand" factor. ;)

So depending on which angle we approach the discussion from, a watch brand can be associated with multiple car brands, and a car brand can likewise be associated with a few watch brands. No absolute or correct answers here. ;)

It would be like a discussion on "which is the best luxury watch brand?"

Pretty subjective as you can see, and it makes a good topic for discussion.

  7. Ok so I am a bit of a car enthusiast as well ! So it makes sense to me to relate watch brands to cars. Helps me put them in some sort of hierarchy in my own mind

This is what I think. Please feel free to ROTFLMAO and to have your own say and correct this. Some watches are already associated with brands but don't know if it's necessarily a good fit

    Panarai - Lamborghini

Rolex - Porsche (struggled with this one)

    IWC - Ferrari

    Omega - Mercedes

    Breitling - BMW

    Tag - Toyota :-)

    Seiko - Honda

    Audemars Piguet - Hummer

    Blancpain - Bentley

    Patek Phillipe - Rolls

    Happy new year

Do you associate the watch/car brands by value, or by style or character?

The Lamborghini is a high end car brand, whereas I would consider Panerai to be a mid range watch brand.

To me, a Rolex (perennial mid range watch brand of the world) could be associated better with Mercedes or BMW instead of Porsches.

The more exotic car brands in your list (Bentley, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche) would be more closely associated with AP, Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, or even Richard Mille.

It all depends on how the association is formed. :)

  8. I had a quick question. Did changing the strap have anything to do with the discomfort of the rep strap? Or purely your incentive stylish Maner? Haha

Seriously. I find my strap incredibly uncomfortable in comparison to the rubber rep straps that come with the 42mm AP reps I have. I'm not sure red is the move for me. Truly would prefer to stick with a black rubber but this thing is awful uncomfortable. Suggestions? Thoughts comments?

Haha no mate it was purely a matter of trying to be adventurous.

You can try to purchase an alcantara strap from SMPLover, the comfort is legendary. ;)

  9. thank you @Legend i stumbled over this post too late - however i do feel that other senior members could tell much more

about Bert - i never contacted him privately but from posts i remember there surely are a few qualities that come to

my mind when thinking about him.. to me he always seemed to be a reasonable and sensitive guy when posting something.

I often remember that his opinions had an encouraging and even-handed touch :(

so sad we loose a great guy as a person and valuable member of our community.

    Dear Katerchen

I always respect long-time members like your good self, who must have been around when this RWG started.

Members like your good self probably paved the way for the rest of us, and must have hoards of knowledge about life and watches to share! ;)

Yes we lost a good pioneer member, and I find his passing very sad for various personal reasons, but we still have other senior members like yourself, Nanuq, etc to speak to and learn from.

Absurdly, I find it very heartening to see a post from someone who has been around as long as you have.

If you could try not to disappear into the woodwork again, it would be nice to learn a thing or two from guys like you.

  10. ...thanks i guess thats the penalty for not being very active on the board -

just read the sad news  :wounded1:

You are a veteran member of this board Katerchen, and you must have known Cats a bit better than most of us, given the fact that he was a member for about as long as you are..

Do share with us some insights into the life of this intrepid man if you are able to, and feel inclined in any way...

It is really sad especially when I go back to read his last posts on RWG. :(

  11. I see Angus has the Noob version listed, but his pictures are absolutely horrible.   Do you have a link to somehwere that has photos of the Noob that would be more helpful to check out?

    P

I agree that PT pics are horrible (in general), but actually what I liked about the Noob blue DSSD dial are

    a. The Blue-black transition starts at about halfway down the dial, like the gen.

    b. The "Deepsea" word seems to be the correct color.

    c. printing wise, without a loupe, it looks crisp and defined enough, I can accept that on a $300 rep.

I might order this, and strip the dial to install in my DSSD if its nice enough. ;)

  12. If you told me you were going to put a red strap on the FC i'd have said absolutely not ...... however seeing it, it looks absolutely spot on .. love it !!!

TBH i like it much better than the straps with the coloured accent stitching that folks put on their APs.

    So to sum up :

     applause_large.jpg

Thank you kindly baxter. I appreciate your comment, and the applause pic.

  13. Cats will always be remembered as a brave warrior, loving father, and most of all, a man who never stopped living and loving till the end.

Carpe Diem indeed, each day we live brings us closer to our final curtain, but between now and then, may each of us find meaning in our daily existence, and make life better for others who cross our paths.

The legacy of a man lies not in how rich and powerful he becomes, but by how he changes the world and others for the better.

Rest in peace Cats. I'll not forget the lessons you left behind.

  14. Thanks Legend,

I agree, movment i already found the mistake..:.

Finaly I will take your suggestions and order one by the RWG contacts when I'm back in Germany again.

    Thank you all

    Cheers

    Andy

    No worries Andy,

In brevity, stay away from the Phuket reps.. buy one when you are back in Germany. You would then at least know what you are getting, and also facilitate future sales of the watch, as you are then able to describe the watch and its source accurately. :)
