  1. Another quick thought, here's how it'd look with a traditional red GMT hand.

    GMTIIa2.jpg

What do folks think? Red or green?

My instinct is towards green (I'd've gone with red if I was having the dial and hands in 'vintage color', rather than just 'vintage-style')

  2. Well you've got my attention TJ. Go on give it a go and keep the pictures coming.

    JTB

Thanks, Jon :) I guess the worst outcome is that the insert won't fit into the SD bezel, and I'll just have to build it in the GMTIIC case :) I probably won't have the spare cash to do this for about six months, but I wanted to get people's feedback before committing cash to a project which could never work :)

    Fantastic, love it!

    :thumbsupsmileyanim:

    Thanks, bro :good:

  3. Okay, I've finally got to grips with my new graphics package, and cobbled together my plans for V2.0 of my GMT Sub.

    Ingredients

    SeaDweller case and bracelet.

GMTIIC Bezel Insert, minute and GMT Hand, and movement.

Vintage-style Submariner dial and hour hand (sword style).

I don't know if it'll all fit together, but I'm hoping it'll work out to look something like this (imagine the ceramic bezel insert)

    GMTIIa-1.jpg

What do folks think? Should I give it a go?

  4. Huh...it's not because it's a rep that they need to get the color wrong if it is indeed wrong, which I'm not sure at this point, it's probably ok actualy.

They don't 'need' to get the color wrong at all, but because it is a rep, then chances are that the color could be wrong. As I said above, it's green. Okay, so possibly a different shade of green, but not enough that anyone should care. Please bear in mind that colors can vary in appearance depending on how they are photographed. I once had a shirt which was the color of an old ceramic pot. Any time it was photographed with a digital camera, it would appear to be a much more vibrant color. More like cinnamon or an ochre, rather than the true ceramic color. If you're not actually sure, then it's probably okay ;)

From your photo, I'd say it looks fine :)

if you like mine you can have it for $100 ;-)

If I had $100, I'd buy it from you. However, I'm selling my collection to pay for my wedding reception, so I don't have any spare cash at all...

Sorry if I came across as harsh, but being concerned about the shade of color on the hand is the kind of thing many rep collectors take in their stride, as just one of the things which can happen.

  5. I would say that if you are that bothered about what shade of green has been used, don't ever consider buying a replica, as you will always be severely disappointed as there will undoubtably be some kind of variations in color. The hand is green. That's good enough for most reasonable people. If not, you have two choices. 1. Don't buy it. 2. Buy it and paint it the right color yourself.

Don't forget, that color can vary from picture to picture, even of the same item.

I'm considering buying this watch myself, so please don't think I'm criticizing the watch itself, I just think your expectations are incredibly unrealistic.

  6. This just confirms my suspicions perfectly and why I did the thread. I would put a gun to my head and bet almost anything that anyone would say a 16610 was more comfortable than any PAM hands down and yet you don't. And yes, the PO is WAY less comfortable than a Sub with either the rubber or bracelet for me. I guess everyone's wrist is different regardless of size.

That's what she said last night ;)

  7. Great !

That's some information. I think it would be useful if I can post some pictures of the Full Ceramic version. There is one thing which is sure, the ceramic version bezel number iis a LOT darker than the v1.0, non full ceramic version.

    Keep you posted!

If anyone has any idea of how to swap the cyclops, let us know !

    Cheers.

    K.

Bro, I can tell you how to remove a cyclops no problem. Reattaching one would be a different matter ;) (well, I know the principle, but not precisely which kind of glue is used)

  8. Totally agree ...

But things can get "worse" : The new sub, in SS, may have the same bracelet as GMTII. Well, not the same but with polished midlinks.. that will kill that beautiful tool watch.. And what has been left for a buyer of a classic sport tool rlx watch?? Seadweller? ... u know the story

I haven't seen the new sub in black with the polished bracelet, but I have seen the pale blue version, and that has the polished bracelet. I think anyone wearing one would look like a ponce*... :D

For anyone unfamiliar with this rather British expression: Ponce

  9. I understand completely. It was the 'bling factor' of the polished midlinks of the GMTIIC which I did not like. Indeed, when I begin my project, if I can get the case to accept one of my other bracelets, even though that model bracelet might be wrong for that model watch, I'll be swapping them without a moment's hesitation. I can't stand bling or ostentation. It's as you say, I want a gentleman's tool watch, not some R&B bling bling

  10. I'll play :)

Talking purely comfort, with visual aesthetics playing absolutely no part whatsoever, these are mine...

My most comfortable watch, is the one I built yesterday... On the NATO strap, it weight next to nothing, and I can't even tell it's on my arm.

    DSCN0687.jpg

Okay, so it looks like junk, but, it's pretty easy to read, and the lume is phenomenal for a rep :good:

My least comfortable, is this clone of a Suunto Vector:

    DSCN0685.jpg

The strap is really stiff at the sides, so it doesn't conform to my wrist, it just presses against the bones <_<

With regards bracelets, I'd say that the most comfortable is the Omega X-33 on the bracelet.

    DSCN0581.jpg

While Oyster bracelets are comfortable because they completely encase your wrist, this kind of Omega bracelet is comfortable because it only makes contact with your wrist at the high points of the links, so it's minimal contact. Also, having a quartz movement, the watch is much lighter than say a 42mm Planet Ocean. With the Planet Oceans, by comparison with the X-33, I would definitely say that it is the weight of the watch which makes the bracelet uncomfortable, not the bracelet itself...

  11. See, this is what I love - a completely different approach to collecting and making choices as to what do do now and in the future. Very interesting. I would also like to see you go through with that project. Shouldn't be too hard really. a GMTC rep case and bracelet. Maybe brush the center links. Mix and match the Omega and Rollie hands - maybe even use a red GMT hand instead of green.

Once all wedding and related expenses are handled, then the project will be under way. It's only going to be costing me about $240 for the two reps I'm going to cannibalize :) Rather than brushing the center links of the GMTIIC, I was planning on possibly installing the bracelet from my current GMT Sub. I know it would be a bit of a clash, putting a 'vintage' bracelet on a modern watch, but, equally, the dial and hands are 'vintage', so that would fit in with my 'new old stock' plan, and ultimately, I need the bracelet to have a diver's extension, as that's a function I need, but the GMTIIC bracelet doesn't have one  No mixing of Omega hands though, the plan, based on the concept art, is to use the sword hour hand from the vintage Sub which will provide the dial (and possibly the bracelet) and the Maxi minute hand from the GMTIIC. I thought about using a red GMT hand, and obviously I could transplant the one from my GMT Sub, but I have to admit, since seeing the GMTIIC 'in the flesh', I rather like the green hand. I guess I can always try both and see which looks best :)

  12. 1. Do you have some sort of plan for your collection in terms of covering certain categories that interest you? And if so, what are your categories?

The overall theme for my reason for collecting watches, is 'movie related'. If a watch appears in a movie or TV show I've enjoyed, then I might get one for my collection. At one point, I was having several (non-movie related) watches simply so I would have the 'different occasion' watches, but, after a mental spring cleaning, I can't really be bothered to keep changing watches with my wardrobe, and, while I will always want to keep my 'movie related' watches, they will simply be collection pieces rather than 'wearing watches'. With regards wrist time, I just want to have one watch I like, and wear that. I think that 'One Watch' will likely be the GMT Sub V2.0 I plan to build in about 6 months. It will look exactly like I want it to look. It will do everything I want it to do. I would have no need to wear any other watch...

    2. Do you find yourself drawn to any one brand purposefully or accidentally as I have been that you find makes the best watches to your taste for multiple categories - and as I said do you find that in many cases you only like one watch across a whole line quite frequently?

The brand which I am most drawn to is Omega. I like a great many of their watches, where other brands, I might only like a few particular models. With regards the watch I'm building, I'm building a Rolex, simply because Rolex seem to lend themselves more to 'customized pieces'. While I could build a GMT Seamaster, it would not have the 'vintage feel' which I want for the watch, where the vintage Rolex dials, are exactly the dials I am envisaging. The feeling I'm getting, is almost one of recreating a watch from 'that era', but as it would be if it were being made today, with modern materials, and by 'that era', I mean mid-late seventies in Marseilles (a city I've never visited, but feel a strong connection to  ) and worn by someone in the diving industry.

    [Edit to add]

First ever concept mockup of the GMTCSub: (Note, this was the first time I used this graphics package, with the tools on default settings, and just to get an idea of how it could look, rather than a polished, final piece of work :) )

  13. I would advise you not to buy from Silix unless you are prepared to live with the following statements:

    - Regardless of any claims made by the dealer, all Silix goods are drop-shipped without any QC.

    - Communication with Silix can be slow. Do not expect a reply within 48 hours. If you get one, you are lucky, but do not expect it.

    - If there is an issue with the shipment, do not expect to be notified of it by the dealer, but simply wait till you run out of patience, and send an email asking for an update. You will then be told that your shipment was seized by customs, and a new shipment has been posted that day.

    - Hope that you receive the correct stock and in a reasonable condition. Getting an issue resolved is a tedious process.

For all that, I must say that Silix is an extremely polite and pleasant person. If you're happy with those potential risks, then go for it :good:

  14. Not something I'm wearing, but I just finished building this out of the parts I had lying around... It is, to use a British expression, "Rough as arse'oles..." but I think it's got character, so I wanted to share :)

    Ingredients:

1 x Vintage Silix case (case, crown, crystal and hands)

    1 x EuroFakes Bezel insert

1 x 'other dealer' caseback (engraved with 'Original Gas Esoape'

1 x 'other dealer' GMT Master II dial. Modified with a sharpie to obliterate lower printing. Mounted via double-sided tape to the movement

    1 x generic NATO strap

Doesn't photograph too badly, if I do say so myself :) It might not be any particular model, but it's good to know that I can still build stuff

  15. Thanks man.

If it's like that, it's a waste of photos. I should be selling them. :D

    :D

After we came out of the AD, my wife said that when I put the Explorer II on, I apparently gave a look of utter disininterest and indifference bordering on disgust  I thought I just shook my head politely as I said "No thanks," when I took it off  Oh well :D The GMT II C got a thumbs up :)

  16. I remember an old thread along similar lines where one of the members (can't remember who) was attempting to set a new trend of wearing the watch on top of the shirt/sweater?

We all had a good laugh at that one.

    JTB

I've seen a few examples of people doing that, and with business suits, it looks pretty silly :D I will wear a watch on top of a pair of ski-gloves, but it is still covered by the sleeve of the jacket I'm wearing :D

I normally wear my watches low on my wrist, but I don't wear them tight, so if my hand does flex back, the watch just moves with my hand :) That said, I don't wear a watch so loose that it can actually rotate around my wrist. I can just about get my index finger under the bracelet of my watch, and can just about force it around my wrist if I had to, but it certainly wouldn't 'slop round' of it's own accord :D

  17. Hey "TeeJay", Thanks for the info my brother. That's definately handy to know that the bracelet wouldn't even fit on the Sub case. Now I can stop looking around for one to buy.

No problem, bro, I wouldn't want to swear to that info being accurate, but I'm sure I read it only a few days ago. It might be worth looking at the DSSD threads, and maybe seeing if an owner could measure the lug width :)

I forgot to say, if you're using a Maxi Dial, you definitely need to stick with the larger hands as well. Regular sub hands are dwarfed by a Maxi Dial...

  18. maybe you understood correctly what the OP said...after rereading the subtitle of the thread...

but probably the OP is not aware of the cost the modders ask for some of this pieces..depending on all the work done, parts,....and so on

Indeed, I think it's only fair that additional costs put into a watch, such as modifications or recent servicing, be taken into account at a sale, as those are costs which the new owner will benefit from :)
