  1. I recently performed a movement transplant in my black and grey Suunto Clone. Despite the two cases being theoretically identical, I had to tweak the contacts on the new movement so it would make the proper contact with the case pushers. I used a pair of jeweler's 'wire-bending pliars', and it took quite a bit of trial and error to get the connections correct. Crazy as this might sound, I felt the same pleasure in doing the work, and had the same feeling of satisfaction at the end, as I have felt from working on a mechanical movement. For me, the passion is watches, regardless of the specifics :)

  2. Does the Omega black rubber strap on the 45mm Planet Ocean fit the 42.5mm?...(can't seem to find the lug size)

No. The 45mm should have a 22mm lug size, the 42.5mm has a 20mm lug size. There is an older generation of replica of 45mm with a 20mm lug width

If so, suggestions on where to source one?

As far as I know, the only way of getting a 20mm Planet Ocean strap (which is very different from the 20mm Seamaster strap) is an Authorized Omega stockists. I do not know of any 20mm Planet Ocean strap replicas (although there are replicas of the 20mm Seamaster strap). The Seamaster strap looks fine on the Planet Ocean, that's what I've had on both my 42.5 and 45mm (which had the 20mm lug size), but strictly speaking, if you want accuracy, the Seamaster strap is not correct :)

  3. It's an interesting topic to be sure. It was a digital watch which first got me interested in watches in the first place: The Seiko worn in Octopussy.

I tend to primarily wear mechanical watches nowadays, but, I do have some digital watches in my collection. The Omega X-33, and two Clones of a Suunto Vector. One in all black, the other in black and grey. To be honest, I bought the Clones more as collection watches (as Suuntos are the watch of choice on Stargate:Atlantis) but, if I really felt the need to wear something which was bullet-proof for timing and not caring if it got smashed up, I'd wear one. My preference for mechanical watches is aesthetic rather than functional. If 'they' were to make a digital watch which looked as good as a Rolex or an Omega, then I might be persuaded, but it would have to look like a high-end watch (in terms of quality and aesthetics, rather than 'looking expensive') rather than a nickel-plated saturday night special... ;)

  4. I hate to hijack this thread, but I have to respond to you

    A. to say thanks for answering,

and B. maybe andrew just copied that from another listing and forgot to take that out? I have all asian movements too and not the "best" ones.

I have an omega PO 45 with A21J which stops when crown is pulled, and SuperOcean steelfish, a21J movement, that stops when i pull out crown, so Im glad I just learned that those movements were modified as well.

Thanks. Maybe he means the movement itself was modified, and not the hack that we are talking about? but i doubt it. Thanks. He's awesome, and has really come through for all my pieces, so if he copied the wrong info, no big deal for me.

No problem at all, I'm just happy to give info when I can :)

Maybe he did mean that and simply copy and paste incorrectly, we're all human, and mistakes can happen. But, either way, the information is incorrect, as the movement for a 112 simply should not hack. It is a manual winding movement, not an automatic. I don't want to drag things really off topic, and I'm pleased that Andrew has come through for you on your deals, but to be honest, there have been a lot of incredibly heated arguments in the past about the accuracy of Andrew's listings. At the end of the day, you might be okay with him posting incorrect information, but some people might not know a lot about watches, believe entirely what they read, and thus rely on the information dealers put on their sales as being 100% accurate, and as a community, we need to look beyond our own individual good experiences, and point out errors when they occur, as that is the only way that people who are new, are not sold incorrect goods, or think they need something different to what they are actually expecting, based on dealer information :)

  5. Yours looks WAY better.

    WAY better.

Thanks, I have to admit, it might not have come out 100% as I had planned or imagined it to look, but it is precicely what I wanted :) The jeweler told me that the Titanium will darken over time, so that'll really enhance the look :)

Amazing TJ. Just saw this. I love the look of the harder edges. Much improved from the original. You are giving me ideas for mine now. Hmmmmm...

I have to admit, the engraved lines are actually wider than I originally envisaged... For some reason, I wrote 1mm on the design, thinking that they might not have been able to do a .5mm V cut... Don't get me wrong, I think it looks the nuts, but engravings are definitley more noticeable than I intended, as the cuts creates an optical illusion making them look wider :D I guess I'll have to remember that old saying, measure twice, cut once ;)

Something I would say, if you're thinking of something similar, is that the engravings are pretty detectable between the fingers if the ring rotates (although I might get used to that over time) so when I drew on the additional lines, I kept it so that there are only a few lines 'on the sides', but more lines 'on the top and bottom'. Of course, if you need anything sketched up to take to your jeweler, you only have to ask, bro, and it'd be my pleasure to do it :)

Would love to say it looks amazing mate, but you know I would be lying!! lol It really is at times like these I get really pissy as I would love to be able to see the work both you and the jeweller put into it!

You know I'm way happy for you man, and if the ring makes the day that touch better for you then, even without seeing it, it is a beautiful thing indeed!

Thanks, bro, that's much appreciated :) Once I had the idea of having the engagement ring re-made as the wedding ring, that's all I've really wanted. I did see some nice Zirconia rings online, which would have looked really nice, but, Emily's was way too thick on her finger, and they didn't come in a narrower width. They were also both the wrong size, so in a way, I was glad that they had to go back, as it wasn't what I really wanted to do, it was more a last minute 'that looks good... Let's get that...' scheme :D As jewelery, however, I think you'd really like them: Super high-tech ceramic/metal hybrid, black as Indian Ink, and smoother than the word 'mellifluous' In terms of pure comfort, I don't think I've ever worn such a comfortable ring. Even being a size too tight, it was still incredibly comfortable. Here's a link to their website... This was the particular ring I'd ordered but sent back due to size issues.

  6. LOL. I dont know if you were being sarcastic, but to be honest, I work in a building of about 4,000 people...and NOT one of them have ever worn a panerai, and about 99.9% of them have never heard of panerai. So when I ordered the 112, with fixed lever and slight AR coating, I did it to try to fool the .01% at work, and naturally...not one person will question or, 85% will not even notice it, and the rest that do notice, will just say "nice watch".

I got the 112 from Andrew due to the slight AR coating since I thought AR would make rep more believable since I'm familiar with the breitling AR coating and thats very importing to a B-ling rep to have AR to come off as gen.

The only thing I do question is Andrew states

    HACK MOVEMENT: Yes

and I have no idea with that is.

Not too familiar with PAN, or its movements.

It means that when you pull out the crown to reset the time, the second hand stops sweeping. Now. I've never had a single manual movement (which a 112 has) hack when the crown is pulled. Automatic movements hack. Rolexes, Omegas, Breitlings, etc, but I've never seen that on a Panerai... Unless, that is the difference between an Asian manual movement, and a Swiss manual movement. All my movements (automatic and manual) have been Asian. The Automatics all hack, but none of the manual movements hack.

I hope that answers your question :)

  7. so....You took the pics too ????, jezzzz, now I am really shocked, really really good pics !!!

Sorry about my ignorance...but, what the heck is AD ?, all your models come from AD ... now you are going to say they are for real ???

    cheers,

    Lin

Authorized Dealer. Robbie's toys are the real McCoy ;)

  8. that's gorgeous TJ, undoubtfully creative and beautiful.

    congrats!

Thanks :) It's a hard one to photograph, but after the day, I'll try and get some more photos in different light sources :)

    Beautiful, TJ!

    Industrial yet elegant, very unusual.

Looking forward to the documentation of the actual event.

Thanks, indeed, it's certainly an unconventional design, I'm really happy with it. Best of all, being Titanium, it's lighter than the silver ring it's a copy of

Hopefully, we'll have some good photos to put up of the day :)

    Congrats for your wedding man

Tho, i don't get the ressemblance between pic 1 and 2 or i'm not drunk enough :)

    Thanks :)

If you look at the inner track on the Stargate, which has the constellation glyphs, you'll see a series of white lines running all across the surface. On better pictures, it's possible to see that those white lines are actually 'V' engravings. The pattern on the silver ring, reminded me of the random pattern of the lines, so I had the wedding ring made to resemble to color of the Stargate, and the contrast between the brushed outer surface, and highly polished lines achieves that :)

  9. That is not a big problem - there is special clear glue for this (glas) purpose which hardens under UV light. You can get it from the ususal (Ofrei / Cousins) or at your local Home Depot. If you don't have a UV lamp, direkt sunlight and patience will do...

Ah, I didn't realize it was that easy to get hold of :) I remember reading that it wasn't a good idea to use cyanoacrylate for a dial fix, and then re-case the watch almost immediately after, as the fumes from the glue would condense on the inside of the crystal

I've removed cyclopses before, but never wanted to re-install one, so I'd never needed to know 'Phase Two' of the procedure :D

  10. that's a good question. i think it the difference is that for an everyday watch, i want the ability to change up the look of the watch based on what i'm wearing (ie. throw on a black strap when i'm wearing a black belt & shoes). in terms of my "casual" watch, i knew that i wanted some sort of stainless steel rolex sports model in my collection; i think of it as a pretty basic, casual watch i can wear whenever i don't feel like deciding between my other watches

but if i'm really honest with myself these two categories blur together quite a bit; i guess the reality is that i want two casual/everyday watches -- one on a strap, one on a stainless steel bracelet ;)

    deltatahoe

Thanks for the clarification, I think I get what you're meaning. Everyday = One basic watch head, which can be customized with straps to match with the wardrobe of the day. Casual = Something which will go with pretty much anything without having to worry about strap swaps... I like that idea :good:

  11. From his post maybe they are the same, one lives on rubber and one on a bracelet? Cool how everyone compartmentallizes differently huh? Mine is more about dial colors, finishes and then further grouped by complication / design and Delta is more about final use.

Indeed, it's always interesting to find out about others motivations and themes to their collections (No 'making others tick' puns here today ;) ) Until very recently, I would simply buy a new watch every year (normally around birthday or christmas) and then wear it solidly for a year. I think that's some of why, even with a collection of watches to choose from, I don't actually change the watch I'm wearing very often :) I'm still wearing and loving the GMT Sub. Looks great with a crisp white shirt and dark blue jeans :) I'm looking forward to your feedback on the revised and improved concept art for V2.0 in the Rolex Area ;)

  12. I thought this might be a nice way for folks to share their musical tastes, learn a bit about others musical tastes, and maybe pick up a few new tunes along the way :) After all, the "What are you listening to?" thread is but a mere 'snap shot' into someone's musical tastes, it certainly doesn't give the 'big picture'. I'll kick this off with the playlist on my iPhone, but, I'll preface it, by saying that right now, I am listening to Crocodile Rock, by Sir Elton John :) This is a list which I'm still building on. It contains some of my favorite songs, and by that, I mean some of my favorite songs ever. Those songs you hear in dreams, or that make the hair on the back of your neck stand up every time you hear it because they're just That Good. I've arranged the tracks into 'themes'. Some will be obvious, some maybe less so. Either way, the track listing is chosen specifically so the tracks complement and flow into each other. I've been making mix tapes for about 15 years, so I hope I've got the hang of it by now ;) As John Cussack said in High Fidelity, "You don't want to shoot your load too soon" ;) Here we go :) If anyone's name is actually on this list, I would just like to say a most heart-felt, and sincere, 'Thank you'. Thank you for creating something which has enriched the lives of myself and others :good:

  13. i hope you enjoyed reading the story behind my watch collecting; i know i've enjoyed thinking (and writing) about it :victory:

    deltatahoe

Thank you, that was an incredibly interesting and pleasant read :):good:

If I might ask you to clarify something, how do you differentiate between 'Casual', and 'everyday'? Would that be the difference between a watch worn every working day, and then something casual on the weekend?

  14. I don't see why it wouldn't work. Cool idea.

Thanks, bro, although I'm a little confused, as you've also written:

    Different size I believe.

If the insert was the wrong size, might the entire bezel assembly be transplantable (with a little work, of course :) ) instead? I mean, sure, if the worst comes to the worst, I'll just use the GMTIIC case (and hopefully be able to swap the bracelet  ) but I really like the case of the SeaDweller I've seen, and figuring as that's the Submariner's DoubleHard bastard big brother, I figured why not use that case, and get the best of everything in it :D

  15. It's a weird watch. I like to wear it, but somehow it doesn't seem to "grab" me like the classic GMT.

Nice to have one in your collection though... very nice replication.

    1.jpg

Crazy suggestion, but try swapping the bracelet for a regular oyster bracelet (if it'll fit  ) I think it'll make quite a difference for the better, and draw less attention away from the watch head :)
