  1. Hey, aside from the crappy movement, faux chrono's, 40mm instead of 44mm, not badblack_eye.gif

I'll bet we'll see a good (not great) rep soon.

I wouldn't count on it... This strikes me as the kind of watch a factory might produce, but only as a 'standard line', rather than the more popular lines which get improved versions released. I'm actually getting more and more tempted to buy one just to see how bad it is what it's actually like :whistling:

  2. :bangin: :bangin: :bangin:

tongue in cheek indeed TeeJay...too bad that movement is so very very wrong..:yuk:

What's up with it, are the chrono dials only day/date indicators? It wasn't one I was planning on buying, but I have to admit, I thought it looked like a pretty nice rep :)

  3. I'm sure I've seen someone else post about a Rolex clasp failing in this way... Not sure if it was a glidelock, or just the new GMTIIc-style, but it was the exact same point of failure. I guess this is an example of why people shouldn't wear a bracelet too tight, and a bit of an irony that the old oyster clasps wouldn't fail in such a manner, the metal would simply stretch :pardon:

  4. I just put on Firefox to check, and Eastwood is wearing the variant with the Jubilee bracelet. It also looks like there is either a significant crack in the crystal, or it's catching a reflection from the room... It's interesting how with this watch, the GMT hand is completely un-painted :) I can see why it's not everyone's cup of tea (I doubt I would wear one myself) but it's certainly interesting from an observational point of view to how it differs in comparison to say the Pepsi variant :)

  5. yes i will try a single coat thanks very versitile varnish is iv seen some great dials aged with varnish! at that watch road show out of the 14 rolex subs on show 3 had this yellow patina and they looked superb! i believe that by aging a crystal to desired affect this in turn will make the dial looked aged too!

I guess it might be an affect which naturally only occurs when the watch is exposed to certain conditions, but the one I mentioned the other day, the crystal work really was the icing on the cake :)

  6. yes i agree mabe a pine stain, or only one coat of spray, the desired affect should be a light patina that can mostly be seen looking at it from an angle actually its looks better in the flesh than in the photo ,the crystal was also resting on top of another crytal installed in that case so that dident help much! yellow marker pen?

the varnish can be removed by rubbing it of with a cloth!

I think just a single coat of spray would work well :) Indeed, marker pen on the inside of the crystal. I forget who's project it was, but it was an aged military Sub. Really looked the business, so I'm sure you can get the same effect with the stain :)

  7. Teejay i agree with you completely thats what this experiment was all about finding a balance and an aceptable affect as with all experiments it may succeed or may fail anyway, it only cost the tin of spray the crystal was a cracked one!

I think that attempt might have been a little too heavy, but you can probably strip the varnish off and retry :) I think I remember that someone tried a similar effect with a marker pen :)

  8. Unless I am missing something, why would you want to purposely turn a good lens into a bad lens? A discolored lens, in my opinion, does not lend a rep any credibility, it just makes it difficult to read the dial & indicates that it is time for a xtal replacement.

If I recall, a while back Dems said that a clear crystal was one of the things which he considered a potential tell for a rep (I believe referring to vintage Daytonas...) As with everything, I think it's a matter of finding the right balance of techniques to create the desired effect :)

  9. That's a fantastic read :) If you really want a particular gen, and it would be a truly satisfying purchase, then I would say yes, sell all your reps to get the funds :) But. I would ask this question first...

Would that rep (in flawless condition out of the box which would require no modification) be as emotionally satisfying, as the reps which you sought the parts for?

Sure, a gen (or rep) as a gift will always have the sentimental value of being a gift from that person, but a self-purchased gen would only ever be that. I would just say consider if looking at the gen might make you miss the modded reps you sold to buy it, more than you appreciate the gen itself... :)

  10. Not a model often discussed, but it does have a unique charm :) I know Clint Eastwood wore one in Firefox (novel was wayyyy better than the movie, as is usually the case...) The thing which I've always noted about the rootbeer variant, is the size of the lume, in comparison to the size of the markers, that's always struck me as unusual, but of course, it just adds to the character of the watch :)
