  1. Personally speaking, I would only consider that dial to go with a lug hole case (if you want to be accurate) as I feel that the 16800 needs lug holes and the older-style bracelet, where the 16610 needs solid lugs and solid end links to separate between the two models of watch. When the line blurs between that variation, that's when I think "What's the point in calling it a ..... when the details could equally be a ...." If you're not too anal about such a small detail, then just case it up however you want and enjoy it :victory: Equally, you might consider selling it on here, as 16800s are a popular build, and someone might be willing to take it off your hands for a reasonable price :good::drinks:

  2. Yup! I would agree that the "Hampster's" collection is probably legit! And if it wasnt, I would congragulate him on a fine rep collection! Clarkson, I would call out in public for wearing a rep even if he had on a Seiko! - Im not a fan of some one I being an @ss just because they can be.

You see so many Vintage Daytonas on stars these days as their daily beaters, I wonder how many of them are fully original pieces or pieces "put together" for them.

Hammond has the funds for his collection to be gen, and I would suspect that reps would just open him up to too much (additional) ridicule from Clarkson for him to risk owning any, but he definitely has good, and varied, taste in watches :) Clarkson, he just deserves to get kicked square in the nuts. I rather liked the time Trinny and Susannah went on, and Trinny was glaring at him like he was the scum of the Earth

Hard to say on the Daytona issue, simply because the folks I've seen wearing them, have the funds to be able to not only afford the originals, but more importantly, treat them like the daily beaters they were originally designed as, irrespective of current market value. The watches were never meant to be collected and kept as safe-queens, but worn and used daily, and it takes a celebrity bank balance (or reps :tu: ) to be able to afford to treat a 'luxury brand' like the cheapest quartz

  3. If Rolex had stayed true to what grouchy collectors (myself included) wanted, they wouldn't be in business right now. Unfortunately, a company needs to evolve. The more iconic a piece is, the more even a subtle change looks wild and radical.

Look at the Sub, the biggest change was they made the dots on the dial slightly bigger and every collector lost their heads/

These crazy design Daytonas are such a tiny fraction of their sales, even within the Daytona line.

I'm sure there were some Rolex collectors fifty years ago looking at the new Submariner and thinking, "40mm?! Who needs a watch that big? If you've such poor eyesight that you need a wrist-clock like this, you shouldn't be diving."

Would that really be such a bad thing? I was talking to a jeweller a few weeks back, and he said that if it wasn't for Tudor, Rolex would have actually gone under (although he didn't specify which era/years this was refering to) which I found quite interesting :) At the moment, I think Rolex is aiming (with the new releases) at a very different demographic than it historically catered to...

  4. Late start is good for me, as I've had a change of watch late in the day :bangin: No, I haven't buggered the GMT, it's still 100% fine, but the weather here today has been absolutely foul with really nasty heat and humidity, and the SS bracelet just wasn't feeling good :( By choice, I would have put on my 79090 on its Tropic-Style strap, but sadly, the strap ripped a few months back, and I haven't had the spare cash to replace it, so I've had to go for my Mercedes 9401 on NATO :pardon: Hate the strap, love the dial, wish I had the corresponding hands (but when the time is right...) but such is life :bangin:

  5. Being born in 1200, would be my pick. At age 15, I could witness the Magna Carta being signed, while wearing my sundial wrist watch. At age 16, Inventing the mechanical wristwatch. would advance horology hundreds of years by the time this year rolled around. No doubt there would be a massive Hambone watch factory. B)

    :rofl::tu:

Along this example, I would choose 1943 (San Francisco for the location) I'd grow up listening to some amazing music, post-WWII prosperity, do a tour in 'Nam, and then be in my prime as an adult for the late 60s early seventies... Some even more amazing music, Wolfman Jack, some cool clothes, tolerant times, enough techno-gadgets to have a fairly conteporary lifestyle, but best of all, no AIDS to stop me partying with all those gorgeous ladies :victory:

  6. Daniel Craig wore some rubber metallic looking planet oceans during filming of quantum of solace, to prevent damage to both the watch and the actor during stunts. Does that count?

Really? That sounds a tad unrealistic, given how for Casino Royale, they superglued sand/mud to one of the Planet Oceans for the one of the scenes (it was auctioned in that trashedused condition after filming and still commanded a pretty penny :bangin: )

  7. It's a nice watch, it's a bad replication... It's a gift from your boy, so wear it and enjoy it for what it is :good::drinks:

PS As you've not got fixed lugs, but spring bars, you could always replace the NATO with a Tropic-stye strap, or maybe a bracelet, if you wanted to dress it up a bit :victory:

  8. More! More! :clap2:

Rolex 'lost their way' when they went 100% to sapphire crystals.

"Rats! I cant tell the time on my new $44,000 Sky-deeweller while flying my new $25million jet aero-plane because of the glare on the crystal."

Rolex 'lost their way' when they stopped selling parts to supply houses.

"Sir, I understand all you need is a new crystal but we require you to get our exclusive $2000 overhaul, plus parts of course, in order to obtain the crystal...and you get a free limited one year warranty!" On the crystal.

Rolex 'lost their way' when they swelled up and chunked out their sporty watches.

"Pardon me sir but did you know you have one cuff high and one cuff low?"

"Yeah, it will not go down over my new chunky style rolex sub-mareener."

Rolex 'lost their way' when they stopped making 'real' watches and went onto the fashion jewelry business.

"Man! That's a super cool Duh-tona with all them diamonds and rubies on it! I love it!"

"All you hookers are just alike...you don't love the man wearing the watch, you just love the watch."

Rolex 'lost their way' when they stopped putting their cheapo, flimsy, stamped clasps on their sporty watches (the models that should still have acrylic crystals).

"Pardon me sir, is that a spider web on your new chunky style rolex sub-mareener?"

"No, it is a busted crystal, I bumped it against a slot machine. If the watch did not stick up so high, my cuff would have protected it"

"I am sorry sir. Did you notice it is no longer running?"

"Yeah, it's been like this for six months, they want $2000 to fix it. I have a new Sky-deeweller but can't tell time on it because of the glare."

"I wish I had my old 1675 and 1680 back..."

...and it's been a downhill slide since then... :bangin:

    Fer sure. :pimp:

    Hell yeah :tu: :tu: :pimp:

  9. Hideous watch by any means..

But you can't say "lost its way" on a company that introduced the skydweller just a few months ago.

All the time it releases abortions like the above listed Daytonas, Roid-Raged beefed up Subs and the "I'm hung like a hamster so need a Big Watch..." DSSD for 1000% profit, yes, it is safe to say that Rolex has lost its way, and with regards the Skydweller, even a broken clock is right twice a day ;)

    [Edit to add]

Lose the diamonds for some nice blue LEDs, and they might be onto something different :victory:

Good perspective. Which TD would you recommend then if I want to start sourcing for noob watches?

If you want to stick to the forum list, then I believe Narikaa is able to source noob watches, and WatchEden is probably worth emailing :victory: Personally, I'm not so specific as to source factory, and just take what I can get on CQout  Joking aside, I've never been let down by what I've received, nor called out, so never had a reason to 'up my game' :pardon: I think being specific is only really a requirement if you need a specific case for a modding project :)

  11. What with Facebook and YouTube accounts, I am not surprized that these dealers are coming under fire from the Big Dog's legal teams... All the time they were obscure, they were able to operate below the radar. Once they 'went mainstream' (with their still totally illegal and black market businesses) it was only a matter of time before they came under sanctions :bangin: As before though, I'm not actually seeing any evidence of delays. King is a former Cartel dealer, so in the same league of 'untrustworthiness' as Andrew and Josh, as far as I'm concerned :whistling:
