Awesome to see a post from you, brother, take it easy and get well soon :):good:

  2. Many of the big dealers can't be bothered, but the smaller ones will usually source parts such as crystals. I couldn't get ONE trusted dealer to sell me a Breitling Ocean Racer deployant without the rubber (for a custom strap project), but got one fine from a non-forum dealer (for $35). Thing is, you mention their name and you risk getting in trouble.

Just email all the dealers, someone will be able to help.

That has been my experience as well. Unless someone is a well established character, asking a dealer if they can source a part will likely be met by a refusal.

Best of luck getting the situation resolved, or in acquiring a new crystal :good:

  3. Along with cheap reps comes cheap ingenuity, cheap qc and cheap production methods creating a cheap and problematic watch :)

I'd have to disagree... I've never bought the most expensive reps, and the ones I've bought have been okay. The only problems I've really had with cheap reps, are ones I've inflicted on them myself... I have a very cheap rep on it's way, which was purchased so I can use it as a parts donor, but I'll be happy to evaluate it's quality (or lack of) before I take it to pieces :) Of course, there are some real cheapies out there which are garbage, but given the markup which dealers apply, it would not be unreasonable to think that some of the cheapo dealers are simply shifting the product at cost price, in the hopes of making a profit from overall volume of sales...

  4. Oh man, that is SWEEEEET :good: If I was able to come up with a decent design for a Tudor dial, might you be able to print one up, and if so, how much would you want for the dial? I'm really keen to build a Tudor watch, but just don't have the kind of cash for an NOS dial, and something like what you've done, would be absolutely ideal for what I had in mind :) As you say, maybe not great for a perfectionist, but for someone just after a fun watch, I think you could really be onto something :)

  5. I guess, as above, it's a case of supply and demand, and prices reflect that. Reps provide a more affordable product than gens, so while folks might not be able to afford a new gen, a rep is not a financial impossibility, so they're more likely to be purchased by collectors, so the dealers aren't feeling the need to drop their prices. Of course, there are some very cheap reps available :)

  6. Personally, I just let my watches wind down and let the mainspring and hack lever relax (i.e. no unnecessary tension on these parts). Since the hack lever comes in contact with the rim of the balance to stop movement, I'm not certain if there is any detrimental effect to keeping a movement in the hacked position for the long term.

I have to admit, I'd often wondered just how the hack function functioned, and now I know :)

  7. All that money and yet with the exception of the two JLCs (Reverso and Diver), the Omega Apnoea, and of course the reissue Monaco (which I'm currently stalking), there's not a single watch there I'd give wrist time to :yuk:

Clearly an avid collector (as opposed to a WIS) but in general aesthetic terms the whole set is IMO quite tasteless, tacky and very much infused with an "I'm richer than you" tone. That Offshore has said he was an embezzler fits perfectly. Madoff probably has a similar collection you'd imagine.

I agree entirely. An interesting collection in terms of diversity of brands, but only a few watches (such as the Cuervo y Sobrinos, black dialled Ebel and black dialled Ulysse Nardin) I would even consider wearing, the rest, despite their obvious cash value, just look cheap and tacky.

  8. hehehehe thanx for the advices.... keep them comin!!!! and yes... its a HARD call... I do rotate my watches... and im not "sentimental" about any of them... i just like them a lot hehehehe... but also like a lot of another watches... I think im no the kind of "one watch guy" so... maybe sell... buy another... and sell... and buy... and sell... and buy! :o

In that case, I would say sell sell sell, buy the one you want, then, when you get bored of it, sell that one on to finance the new purchase :good:

  9. I just got off the phone with Lani. Finally he was able to tell me in detail what he went through. Out of respect for his privacy I will not share the details, but suffice it to say that he has really been through the ringer and is a lucky, lucky man to be alive. He is getting excellent care, which is of course is really important when you have a meltdown situation like that. His spirits seem good although he is very drained and slow to speak. It is kind of weird hearing him sound like that. But I can tell you that I know him well and the "light" is definitely there inside him now if you know what I mean. I now believe he is really on the mend and will make a full and relatively speedy recovery. At least that is how I feel it as of today.

So you all please put your energy toward that thought and let's multiply it for him just to be thorough. Send him the positive vibes if you believe in that kind of thing. Other than all that I can tell you that he even said he is motivated to get his laptop into the hospital so he can get back to the forum and read his press. LOL. Just kidding, but him being motivated to log on is another good sign. He asked me to give everyone his regards and said he will try and come around when he can and give you all an update in person. So all in all, I would say this is the best news on bruddah Lani yet. Stay tuned...

That's really good news indeed, bro, thanks for sharing it with us :) Indeed, lots of good vibes being sent bruddah Lani's way :good:

  10. The 3 Universal Axioms of Watch Collecting

    1. You will never be happy with 1 watch, no matter what it is - rep or gen.

    2. If you lust after a particular watch, you will never be satisfied until you get that watch.

    3. Once you acquire that watch, you will lust after another.

And if you think you will outsmart Axiom 3 by trading the other watch for another, please re-read Axiom 1.

That's very true... Even when one thinks that they're happy with a watch, eventually, the idea to mod the watch might creep in, or, another watch will become the object of 'the hunt', so the enjoyment of the original watch can wane...

  11. So this is my dilema... I own some gens... the kind you see replicated but not the kind We lust about (tag, omega... that kind). But now I find myself thinking about selling them all to get a better watch... I like some Rolex, some AP, some Vacheron... well... You know wath I mean... so the dilema is this... should i sell my gens to only have one better gen? I been thinking about it and I see pros and cons... having more gens (even cheaper ones) gives me the advantage of rotating them... but also having 1 nicer gen... would give me the pleasure of a better movement... something besides ETA, a better brand... a watch that I could pass along to my son... or maybe not... and Ill find myself selling it also... hehehehe... I know that it sounds silly... but I have no idea of wich decision to make... only thing I know... its that this kind of suffering will never end :) I know a lot of You would say "So... sell them all and get 20 reps!!!" and thats not my idea... i mean... Im amazed by the level of quality of the reps seen here... but for me... it would never be the same... Ill always know... so... the reps are something apart... I love them... and Ill be buying them... but "gotta have my gens"... any advice???

My advice would be to ask you these questions, and hopefully the answers will give you the advice you need :)

    1. Are you someone who frequently rotates your watches, or do you tend to wear one particular watch the majority of the time?

    2. Do any of the watches have sentimental value? ie gifts from friends/family/partners

If you don't frequently rotate your watches, and they don't have a lot of sentimental value, then I would say sell them. Another way you could look at it, is if a particular watch does have sentimental value, if you sell that watch, then it has still provided you with the money from its sale, so you could then put that towards a new watch, as money 'in the spirit of the sentimental value' :) Best of luck with making your decision, and welcome to the forum :good:

  12. As for myself... Well... Let's just say that if this watch was a child, it would probably be on the 'at risk' register...

Fortunately, my wife's been kind enough to get some parts on order for me :) (well, a cheap Asian sub I can dissect  )

    [Edit to add]

This is a one-off photo to show the abuse I've inflicted on the 'hand side' of the watch. I can't describe how utterly wrong it felt having a watch on my left wrist :yuk::bad::yuk: Oh well, enjoy the photo :)
