LH, I had joked with Ubi about putting it on one of the gen fora as a heretofore undiscovered engineering prototype of a model that never made it out of the lab to see how many bites it got!
I'm glad y'all find it interesting and I can truly say it WAS easier to start from scratch than it was to weld up and re-machine a Datejust case...
Welded up DJ case:
PS, if the welded up DJ is in need of a good home...

I have to admit, it does absolutely nothing for me... If that's the kind of movement which has day/date/24 hours on the subdials, as well as the moonphase, I've seen very similar budget movements installed in much cheaper Daytona reps... To me, that watch just represents an utter waste of money, and the power of branding over value...
-
That's a fine collection, some real variety across the range of watches (No PAMs though
) Thanks for taking the time to share it with us

Hell yeah

I use my wrist.
Probably not the answer you were seeking... But I'm too paranoid to travel through airport security with much in the way of valuables.

PS, you might consider one of the 2 or 3 watch leather(ette) attach

Thanks, guyz. Fantastic birthday - I'm now officially a "senior citizen" and my wife informs me I can get cheap coffee at McDonalds now...
Nothing wrong with getting a discount

Happy to be of help, bro, I can't wait to see how it looks fitted
The one I glued into the bezel of my Tudor sub is still holding strong

Hope you have a great day, amigo

Just got off the phone with him
The big guy is doing well, but extremely busy! His time has been largely consumed between work, moving and life in general; just not enough hours in the day for ol' Lani.
I did recently send him a watch; a small reminder to not forget his interest in all things horological! Hopefully we'll see him back online soon.
That's good news indeed
-
He's been busy with life in general; quite a lot going on. But I've got to give him a call shortly anyways, so I'll let him know that he's missed
That's good to know that it's just the day to day stuff and nothing serious, thanks for the info
-
I've seen him make the occasional post in the 'welcome section', but not as much on the main forum as usual, and I just wondered if anyone else had heard from him? I'm sure he's just busy with work and whatnot, but after his health scare last year, I just wanted to be sure he's okay...
Hurry back, bro, your presence is sorely missed

I always thought Rolex made a big mistake by waiting so long to release their larger watches & thus missing the crest of the big watch craze in the early 00s.
I think had they released the larger watches instead of the bejewelled GMT monstrosities, they might have got better results. I have to admit, I think the larger size DJs might be, for many, an ideal daily beater, although personally, I think given the size of the Submariner, I wonder if they might seem 'oversize' by comparison...
I agree. I got my 1st TT DJ (& Armani suit) in the mid-80s at the behest of my then girlfriend, who was in love with the David Addison character played by Bruce Willis in the Moonlighting tv series. Product placement, even when unintentional, can be very profitable.
Absolutely. I never saw the series, but I think something like that, or maybe Will & Grace, was probably a marketing guru's dream project, given the target audiences
-
Unless someone has a pre-release bootleg copy, we will not know until the movie is released on the 27th. But, in the series, he often wore a TT DJ with (I think) a white dial & stick markers. The close-up I posted above is from the trailer, which is obviously a steel DJ. My guess, since the SATC writers & producers are famous for following cutting-edge fashion trends very closely, is that they decided to tone down Big's watch to bring it more into line with today's smaller, more understated mens' watches.
Ahh, I wasn't sure if there might have been any other shots available. As you say, trends are leaning towards the smaller watches, I just think it an irony that Rolex bought out the DD II line with the larger cases, yet a movie like SATC is more likely to get guys either buying a watch like Big's (or their women buying the same thing as a gift for them) rather than simply being swayed by the adverts for the DD IIs
Oh the fun of marketing and product placement
-
Today, I am following Mr. Big's lead (top down, but with different models & sans the inscription)
Do you know what dial combo Big's watch is? I'm sure he wore a DJ in the series, but wore a strapped watch in the first movie... (I'm not a fan, but Emily is...)

No, sorry TeeJay. The only articles I saw mentioned various railroad workers requiring this type of watch, but I'll keep a lookout for you.
No worries, but thanks, it would be interesting to know

You the man TJ! Thanks for the link. I'm gonna check these guys out. Have you listened to any One Republic?
Sorry I missed the reply, that's an awesome track
I'm sure I've heard a few One Republic tracks before, but I hadn't heard that one before... Here's a chunk of my playlist with a few similar groups in the order they appear on the playlist

Ok this is going to sound cheesy but I always loved Creedence Clearwater Revival, I also liked when John Fogerty went solo.
So whether it's 'Bad Moon Rising' or 'Old Man Down The Road', it's all good to me.
Ken
Not Cheesy at all, I also dig the Credence (and can't see why The Dude didn't like The Eagles...) Here're a couple of my favorites of theirs

Luxury items aren't investments, unfortunately. I couldn't recommend buying them for that purpose. There is no way to know what the demand for anything will be 20 years from now. And the vintage pieces that have become highly valued in this day and age are more or less flukes. Nobody can know in the present that a particular dial or watch model will be discontinued after a short lived production run, for example. But that is, largely, what makes many things more sought after in the future - rarity. And even then, 20 years from now, people might have moved on to something else causing the collectibles of today to drop in value. You just never know. That Yachtmaster does contain platinum, so it might well go up in value. But it could also be a very unpopular model that doesn't carry much of a premium in the future. Better off just buying a chuck of platinum, IMO. And that's what is a far better bet anyhow, especially in terms of real (vs nominal) value in 30 years. Gold or platinum bullion over a luxury item like overpriced watches any day of the week and twice on Sunday, if investment is the purpose.
+1
If you want an investment, buy shares, watches are for wearing, not living in safes

Thanks guys!
Out of curiosity, did your research show if there were any other people who might have had this kind of watch? Post Masters, of federal couriers, for example?

Fantastic gesture, bro

The Zigmeister, what do you use to apply the lume? I've read a couple of tuts on it which have recommended oilers, but I am still unsure how the actual application is performed. Could you shed some light on this, please?
It's pretty much a 'dot by dot' application process

I have found that all my reps divers watches except one can be used in water a 1665 comex failed because of a cracked crystal hidden under the bezel as soon as i get my new watch i take out the dial and movement tighten the backcase and crown and submerge the watch over night in a watertank! then when this is done put it back together grease all seals then take it down to get it pressure tested,
paying top $$ for you rep does not mean it is waterproof, my 300 $ 1665 was not but a friend of mine who is a diver used a 20usd comex rep bought from a hongkong street seller and it survived a 100m dive! his three divers watches cost him over 4,000usd each.
most good repsellers are not willing to guarantee water resistance even though most good reps are, except sites like trusty where they have watches pressure tested/serviced for an extra charge
People have reported paying the extra charge, only to get watches which leaked like sieves...
