  1. Hypothesis: This hobby is good, not bad, for genuine watch manufacturers.

    Rationale: I think my situation is probably more common than the converse. I am close to 'success' as judged by income, but certainly not rich or without monetary worries. I can 'pull off' a gen watch or two based on my occupation, but in the <$20k range. I couldn't explain a $100k Patek to my friends/colleagues if I had to.

    I feel that the rep market has allowed me to touch/feel/experience watches that I would not have if I had to buy them. I might have bought one, possible another, traded a few times in my life, and that would have been the extent of my luxury watch involvement. In fact, I own several reps now which are excellent quality, and it has guided me to the following thoughts;

    I can own several nice watches within reason. e.g. I am expanding the luxury market by leaving mid-tier brands for higher tier brands which I could actually buy at present.

    I know what I like. Much better, I might add, than if I owned a gen. I feel that owning a gen would force 'fake' satisfaction on me, causing me to defend a poor fit as I put out a wad of cash for same. I would be boxed into a corner, not wanting to appear a fool who put out $10k for a watch that ultimately didn't work for me. Looked great in the store, not so much on my arm with my fashion sense, etc...

    I will eventually buy these higher end brands. Yes, I am now cognizant of the quality diff. between luxury brands and their reps. I showed up at a reunion with close friends. I was wearing a BK TW best sub. A good bud was wearing the gen. Let me tell you, the diff is obvious. Good thing we were all hammered.

    Being a technical geeky type, I've been thinking of taking some watch-smith classes at a local technical college. I am hooked, and will spend more money within this industry, not less.

    So, there we have it, my defense of the rep community. Let the $50 Time Square/Canal Street crap exist. Noone thinks they are real. The high end rep market likely contributes + dollars to the gen community, not -.

    I totally agree with you about the false satisfaction of a gen, afterall, it was trying a gen Submariner which made me think "That's not worth it, I'll buy a fake..." Personally, I don't think reps take any $$s away from the gen market, simply because someone who buys a rep (for whatever their reason) was not going to buy the gen (for whatever reason) so those $$s would never have gone to the gen manufacturer anyway, but I do think reps can contribute $$s to the gen market, if someone tries a rep, and then decides to get the gen :)

    (of course the French customs officer at Nice airport couldn't agree, but I am sure her husband is still wearing my 205A ....).

    They took it off you? :shock:

  2. kept the cat then? Looks tres comfy!

    Yeah, she wasn't microchipped, and there're still no signs up for a lost cat (and as friendly as she is, you'd think someone would miss her... :thumbdown: ) The vet said that they consider strays for re-homing after seven days, and as the neighbours reported having seen her prowling about for a few days before she came in to us, that seven days is nearly up :) That said, she's the one who has made the decision, as every time we let her out into the garden, she might disappear for a few minutes, but she keeps coming back :victory::wub: We've named her Abisha (Hebrew meaning 'Gift from God')

    Maybe someone has done this already, but if anyone is curious I have both the gnomon strap and the gen strap that comes with the the Tudor Heritage. Not much really to show, but its the only thing I own both a gen & a 'rep' of so I'd be happy to contribute a side-by-side :notworthy:

    Definitely :) I know that the gen Heritage strap isn't a true NATO, as it doesn't have the second strap, but also, the spring bars go through the strap, rather than under it, which is an interesting little design feature :) I don' thave the Gnomon strap yet, just a black with orange stripe NATO, but I cut off the second part of the strap so it is more like the Heritage strap (and also because I felt the metal band 'broke the flow' of the stripe :lol:

    Thanks!:thumbsupsmileyanim:

    Any time, bro :drinks:

    Sorry to dissapoint TeeJay, it's just the picture maybe?

    It's a 2 piece Nato. I have small wrists and 2 pc look and fit me better.

    I've not seen a Velcro band other than that NASA made for speedy's.

    Really? I guess it must just be the picture, I would've sworn it was a velcro strap, but either way, it's given me an idea for when funds allow :lol::drinks:

  3. Not too keen on the strap, but put it on a leather bund strap, and it would look the mutt's :good:

    Loved this selling point:

    The hardened mineral crystal and stainless steel case is waterproof to 100m for an unexpected push from your bro at the neighborhood pool party.

    :rofl::victory:

  4. Thanks TJ!:thumbsupsmileyanim: I'll look around and get a few different color combo.......I'll get one, too for my 1655!

    @Donerix.........I feel the same way, but it's nice to mix them around once-in-awhile!

    Cheers Guys!

    I'm surprised you hadn't seen that strap before, bro :lol: Happy to be of help :drinks:

  5. I know.. that's the thing.. I'm sure the Hublot looks great in real life as the pictures don't do it justice. I am going to get both of these watches, but it's just a matter of which one right now..

    Personally, I would suggest getting the Sinn first, simply because if you don't take to it and decide to flip it, it would probably be an easier piece to sell than the Hublot :victory:

  6. I has a new friend :wub:

    We believe it to be a female, and she'd been seen around the garden yesterday and today, and after we gave her some food, she just decided to stay :tu: Going to take her to the vets tomorrow to see if she's chipped, but I'm really hoping she's not, as I could do with a new familiar :victory:

  7. Both from very poor families, I'll give you that, but both were adopted by rich parents.

    The reason I keep going on about this is it's easier to succeed if you're starting from a place from which failing once or twice won't kill you.

    You didn't miss me at all, did you. ;)

    Absolutely spot on, bro... Much easier to keep trying when you have a trustfund safety net incase things don't work out. Much harder to try again (with anything) when you live hand to mouth, and making a choice between new supplies or food for the day :whistling:

  8. I'n the past, I've tended to drag the case against stuff like house-bricks, tile edges etc, and then used a four-way nailfile and to buff the worst damage away to give a subtle aging effect :) I guess overall, it depends how old and how abused you want the watch to look :)
