  1. I'm actually glad others find a lot of case backs hard to open, as I thought I must be the only one, who couldn't make a sticky ball/duct tape/rubber gloves/suction tool...et al, work! :surrender:

My most handy tool is a case crab, which works 99% of the time on "normal" casebacks, but of course is no use on Rolex style backs.

And at times a decent press style opener is the only answer.

The right tool for the job, is always the better option.

    Offshore

    Absolutely so :)

When in doubt, use a bigger hammer ;)

  2. I believe the misconception arose due to the access people previously had to the footage. It's much easier to determine a detail when one can pause and 'frame by frame' an HD DVD, than if one was, say, sitting at the back of a cinema, and only getting an 'on-screen glimpse' of the detail. There are people in the world who think that, in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Anakin Skywalker wore black clothing, where the truth is, he wore dark brown... People's perceptions are what are being called into play here, against the hard facts. Having seen the stills provided, I am in no doubt whatsoever that there is a red stripe in the weave of the strap, however, that is a case of having an 'untainted sample' in front of me for unlimited examination, rather than a quick glimpse on a cinema screen, and I can quite understand how someone who has not had such an oportunity of examination, to simply think 'Yeah, grey and black...' Someone can be wearing charcoal pants, and the majority of people will simply think they are black... They might 'look black', and people might think they're black, but, that doesn't mean that they actually are black ;) This strap is a prime example of that. I don't think the red is caused by any kind of result of the filming process, but rather an entirely intentional decision during the weaving of the fabric. This level of detail might have only recently come to light, but, that does not mean that it was not their all along ;)

  3. OK, Thanks.

And whom would you recommend for a re-lume job?

Anyone buy from this site? If so, I would like to hear about any problems.

    Ron

I've never had a watch re-lumed, so I cannot speak from personal experience, but, going on popular opinion, Ziggy and Vacuum are the names most spoken of :) Ziggy is, without doubt, a Master of his craft, if you are lucky enough to be able to employ his services (he is very busy) Best of luck :)

  4. I've never bought from someone called Tony at that website, although I have bought most of my watches from a dealer called Tony. If you cannot get a satisfactory response to your email, I would suggest sending the watch for a re-lume. :good:

  5. The rubber glove/ball/duct tape trick has only ever worked once for me. If a case back is installed correctly, with the proper amount of tightness, none of these 'tricks' will work in my experience. If the case back is loose enough for any of these to work, it's not on tight enough.

    Of course, YMMV.

I've never tried a sticky ball, but I've never had any success with duct tape. The adhesive shifts too much between the caseback, and the backing material of the tape. If 'tight enough' is gauged by if a watch leaks when it goes under water, I've never had a watch leak after I've used 'the glove treatment' on them, unless there was an actual issue with the watch (which the replacement did not share) It might not get a caseback done up quite as tightly as a case wrench, but certainly good enough to get a seal, if the watch itself is capable of being sealed ;) Also, doing up something too tightly, is just as likely to deform or damage the gasget ;)

I remember once going into an AD years ago to get the battery changed on an Accurist dive watch. They wanted one price to change the battery, and another price to change the battery and guarantee the water resistance  I walked out and put the cost of battery + pressure test towards a new watch

  6. An interesting read, thanks for sharing :) I've been saying for years that many 'prestige products' are simply the result of clever advertising and hype. I won't deny that there are not some products available which are actually worth their prestige pricetag, but a Rolex sure isn't one of them. If they (as a company) were to get off their elitist high-horse, and start using regular grade materials, rather than smelting their own alloys, then they would be totally unable to justify the price tags. As has been pointed out to me in the past, the Submariner was never intended to be a 'prestige timepiece', it was designed and sold as a very functional tool watch. It would have been purchased, as a tool, a piece of equipment, by people who needed a reliable waterproof timepiece for diving, not as a fashion accessory. Over the years, Rolex, as a company, has taken its goals in other directions, and is now marketing 'fashion items', rather than 'functional timepieces'. The latest 'revelations' at Basel showed just how far from their original market Rolex has gone.

Viewing a Sub as a 'tool watch', rather than a 'fashion watch', I would say that buying a rep, is like buying a hammer or a crow-bar from the Dollar Store, rather than going to Harry's Hardware, and buying a branded item. It'll look pretty much the same, and do pretty much the same job. It just might not last as long ;)

As for the $20 comment, I have a $20 GMT on it's way to me right now (a prize for an upcoming stag do) as well as a $20 Yacht-Master, which will be providing some 'parts' for a repair/rebuild project. I haven't done a review in a while, and will be happy to do a review of them, and we can see how they compare to the watches which our dealers are charging +/- $100 for :)

  7. Treat yourself to a pair of these:

    YellowLatexDishwashingGlovesS.jpg

They will give your thumbs enough grip to be able to rotate the caseback off if you press hard enough in the direction of rotation (you might feel like your nails are about to seperate from the pads, but the caseback will shift first ;) )

To be honest, what you're describing as rotor noise, is probably normal. When it spins one way, you'll hear it 'free-wheeling', when it spins the other, you'll hear a 'ratcheting' as it winds the movement. Unless you hear a real grinding/scraping noise (not the ratcheting) you probably have nothing to worry about. I can hear the rotors on my Sub and GMT movement working, but only when I'm sitting in a relatively quiet environment and listening for them. Would I be right in thinking this is the first mechanical watch you've owned? I think what you're hearing is probably entirely normal for the kind of movement you have fitted. Remember, it is only a rep, not a gen sold at a discounted price ;) Best of luck with any investigations/repairs :)

  8. I don't really care where it came from to be honest bro!! You know why I bought it and I love it!!

    Sixx :bones:

 Indeed, it's much appreciated that it went to a good home, and was of use to me. Sure, some hobbies can be fun, but they're often 'dead cash' once purchased, and, while reps might not bring crazy money on re-sale, they're not as worthless as the elitists on the gen forums would have folks believe ;)

  9. I can testify to TJ's PAM's still going like a train as I helped finance his wedding by purchasing one!!

It's a great watch can only lose secs per day, if that, because I have never been told that it's out by anything, great build quality and, I totally love the bracelet on it, being in a world where touch and feel is everything to me, these are amazing (almost as cool as the VC half 'crown' bracelets if you can get your paws on one, they are wicked cool!!) and the best part, I have a piece of history from my mates wedding!! :)

    Sixx :bones:

Bro, I hate to tell you, but that PAM was the one which I bought from another dealer  PWC, on RWI :) Of course, you're quite right about it, it's an awesome watch, and I'm really glad you're enjoying it :tu:

  10. All but one of my PAMs were from Watcheden. The only problems I've encountered, was one, where the power reserve was non-existent (watch was swapped immediately and without hassle) another, was where the CG lever would not close properly. Again, the watch was swapped immediately and without hassle. My PAMs were absolutely fantastic watches. Accurate in time-keeping, robust enough to take a few knocks, and utterly reliable. I'd recommend Watcheden as a dealer to anyone. Best of luck with your purchase :good:

  11. I rather successfully (albeit entirely accidentally) vintaged a dial once, by leaving the watch under a desk lamp with a 'daylight bulb' for an hour. The lume turned a really dark orangey yellow color, although the hands were unaffected. For the cost of a bulb, it could be a very easy way to vintage a dial :)

  12. well, thats about what i was thinking, 80 ish in USD + ship

i really like this wood, i have some other projects and woods i have to use up, but i think you guys would like it to seeing it in person, its a very semi glossy smooth as glass feeling. This is definitely my new favorite one.

That sounds like a reasonable price to me, especially for a hand-crafted item. Had you considered selling them at local craft fairs, or places like that which deal solely with wooden items?

  13. If the watch is called the Godfather the the only watch that would go with it is a Rolex President in yellow gold. I do however fell this pen is more elegant and worthy of a Patek Calatrava or chronograph.

Considering high end pens go for big money, one of these hand carved out of solid wood should sell for over $200 to $500 on the retail market. Here amongst friends, a significant discount should apply............

There you have it :) The price I quoted was literally only time and cost of supplies, without any 'retail markup' :)

  14. Thanks, i had fun making it, last night. I think that flange out i did on the bottom is a little more than i envisioned, but it looks cool :)

If i make more like this - (i have to order more wood and kits) would any be interested in buying something like this or similiar and at what price.

I will tell you this particular pen costs close to 25-30 dollars for the materials but the all black one would only be around 15$ for materials.

It generally takes me 1.5 sometimes 2 hrs to work a pen. in lawyer numbers thats 225 an hour :)

but, what is a fair price for something that has lots of love and care - and, has parker ink.

    I charge

  15. You are right about la Marine Nationale TJ.

But you know me, I'm an all black sub guy :)

I know what you mean, my friend, we like what we like :) I'm very much a creature of habit when it comes to what I wear, I expect one day, I'll just have a wardrobe full of blue jeans and white shirts  I'd still recommend classicwatchparts as a source, even if you were to go for a black insert. I've not done business with MY yet, but I've always found his communications to be brilliant :) Best of luck with the project :tu:

  16. A fantastic project :good:

My personal suggestion for the insert, would be to get the blue military insert from classicwatchparts. You already have many black on black Submariner-style watches, so the blue and black would be something different. Also, I believe that the blue/black Tudor Submariners were issued to the French navy :)

  17. What if we did a "Mentor" tag like we have Gold, Plat, etc?

That would be an excellent idea, it would make it very east for people to know who to go to if they needed assistance, and might save the mods from having to deal with the more mundane questions :)

  18. So no real info then guys just a discussion about foot/hand/gay/kissball, non of it5 does a lot for me, but louisiana as that is where the job it to start with,

It is where one of my best mates lives hence the job,

I rida a harley and have done for a long time and that is a no helmet state.

They love their food and so do i!

I love a drink so do they!

So you may have got me confused with some one who where's a suit every day, I think i fit in well down there, i just wish they could understand english!

So is there realy any info out there, am i looking at needing a H2B visa?

I nearly emigrated to the USA five years ago, and would have been doing so on a fiance visa. I found the information on the immigration/visa websites to be very helpful. As long as you fulfill their criteria, then you shouldn't have any problems. You say that you may be going over with a company... If this is the case, you must travel from your home, to an actual place of business. A friend tried to move over, as he worked remotely as a server manager, so it made no difference to his company where he was actually logging in from, but, the immigration folks said that because he wasn't actually commuting to a place of business, they weren't satisfied that he actually had a job to go to (the conditions for emigrating as a self-employed person are very strict). That said, I believe you could be sponsored by a US Citizen, and I'm sure there're plenty of bros in the US who would be able to do that for you :) Best of luck with it all :good:
