  1. Hey rkdk, my response about jesse james and such wasn't necessarily directed at you if not to those who seem to think it's ridiculous for someone like pharrell to wear an audemars.. or that seeing someone like pharrell wearing an audemar gives them reason enough not to want the watch anymore.. when it seems like the general consensus is that for someone like jesse james it is definitely acceptable to wear a panerai.... i honestly don't get what the difference is... ????? I haven't heard one comment (in general in other posts on the forum, since i'm the only that brought up jesse james in this post) about anyone saying they're not going to buy a panerai because jesse james wears one....?? what's up with that?

I agree. Actually The Neptunes spawned my interrest for audemars. I remember seing a press foto, with chad and pharrel wearing pink gold royal oaks.

I just thought. "what on earth is that watch".

  2. I disagree wholeheartedly with this. I own almost a dozen gens myself and visit those forums, but my behavior is nothing like this. I just love watches, but I am the exception rather than the rule. Of course, I'm not rich on the level which you speak of though. But I do hang with a lot of them. People who hand on watch forums - gen or rep - do not represent the respective owners of each group of watch buyers as a whole. We are all the exception.

When I meet friends and clients at golf clubs and on yachts and private jets there has never been one time that any of them noticed or commented on my watch, nor did I on theirs. Many of these guys wear Day-Dates and with them a lack of watch saavy is to be expected, but many also wear VC, AP, Patek, Lange, etc. In other words, most high end watch owners actually don't buy watches for status symbols, they buy them because they happen to be sold where they shop for jewelry in most cases. I know a guy who owns a VC Malte Chrono in Platinum and not only can he not pronounce the name, he refers to the hands as "arms". He also just got a new Ferrari 430 and when I asked him how many horses it had he couldn't tell me. I think you see my point. People who buy expensive gens are WAY past the point financially of seeing a watch as a way to impress friends. These guys need to own their own Gulfstream 5 or a 148ft Fedship to do that. Oh, and they have never even heard of TZ or WYS either...

From my experience, most wealthy people come across watches while shopping for diamonds for thier wife. Seriously. They are on Rodeo window shopping and after buying a 100K necklace, they mosey over to the watch counter. They don't know much about the watch brands other than "Yeah, Patek is supposed to be good", or whatever and then the salesmen proceeds to sell them the watch. This is how all the major brands sell the majority of thier watches. They count on it. Most watch companies would tell you they don't even like the big watch stores as they can't ove the high end stock as fast a as jewelry store (Rolex may be the exception here though). Stores that really DO sell 100K necklaces are the best place to sell a 30K watch to the husband - not Tourneau. Plus, he has and excuse to buy somethinng expensive, but justified since it costs way less than what the wife got. LOL. They try them on while the wife is getting fitted. Just another Sunday shopping experience. So over the years they accumulate several nice pieces this way, but unlike us here, they don't seek out watches. The watches find them.

Just to finish off. Thats exactly why i wrote gen owners who visit the gen forums. The really rich people never have a clue, and they dont really care either. Im talking about the watch purists here.

thats all well and good, but whats your position on replica yachts then? :D :D

  4. All gen owners (at least the ones that visit gen watch forums) feel they belong to an exclusive club.

They have payed premium for a watch, and when they meet in airport business lounges and golf clubs, they can spot eachother by their watches.

They then have conversations about their lifestyle, wich often includes money, golf, yachts and so on. Amongst them their ranks are defined by who has the most expensive watch.

They are kinda the lifestyle freemasons if you could put it that way.

When coming across a site like this they see a bunch of reps they could never spot. They start to thin back about all the polite conversation they have had during the years.

Were some of the conversation pieces replicas?!?!

Were they scammed by people not really belonging to their club?!?!?!

Were some of the people maybe not rich?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!?!?!!

Was that a fake yacht i was on?!??!!?!

As you can see this could spawn absolut paranoia amongst this breed of people.

I could compare rep owners to the really good looking straight guy that goes to a gay bar for a drink.

He may not have a problem with the gay community, but they sure dont want him there :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

  5. That chain he has around his neck is worth way more than the watch. Jay Z started off the whole sophisticated look for rappers, including wearing Audemars Piguet, and as always everyone else follows suit.

Actually it was Pharrel and the neptunes. They were sporting audemars on their first nerd album, and back when they produced kelis first album.

I think this was before jay z got in to audemars.

  6. Just saw your reply. Thank you very much for taking the time to write this.

This is why i love this forum. Its not only about watches:-)

I'm UK based and had the older version (3.7 FWD Standard) you are considering before recently trading it in to upgrade for a new shape model (4.2 Quattro Sport).

With the older shape version, there are a number of issues that you need to check in addition to the Tiptronic and I would definitely recommend a full mechanical check by someone familiar with the engines and gearbox because I had a couple of minor issues soon after I bought it that cost a significant amount to sort out so any major mechanical problems would be a huge cost in parts and labour. In particular, you will need to check the timing belt was changed by a franchised dealer at the correct interval (whichever came first - x miles or x years depending on model). Other things to look out for include wheel bearings (switch everything off and just listen for any rumbles from any corner of the car on straight roads, bends and when turning corners) and brakes (new discs and pads are expensive and the A8 goes through them quite quickly) but everything needs to be thoroughly checked (especially the engine management and onboard computers) to ensure you don't get hit with a big bill too soon.

When you test drive the car, ensure that all the electrics work paying particular attention to the climate control. Some of the display LED's fail and the chilling units need to be serviced regularly or you will be driving in an oven - the control unit will blow hot air constantly (even in the height of summer) if the chiller unit isn't working properly because the climate control thinks it's blowing cold air then samples the cabin temperature before blowing even harder...except it's hot air so the cabin gets seriously hot seriously quickly. The sunroof is prone to just quitting on you after about ten years of use, the central locking should be smooth and silent (make sure it works with the key as well as this is also an expensive replacement cost) and so should all the electic seat adjustments. Just make sure you press every single button a few times and everything works silently and at a reasonable speed - e.g. all four windows should rise and fall at the same speed and definitely make sure there are no leaks in the double glazing - the double glazed windows are bonded near the top with a single strip of adhesive material that can perish and allow water to seep in.

If you can find a good one that has a full Audi service history, low mileage, passes all the tests and hasn't had too many former owners (especially in recent years as this is a dead giveaway that the car has problems that may not be too apparent until you've had it for more than a couple of weeks) it is well worth buying and paying a decent price for because cared for A8's in top condition will last. However, the cheaper high mileage examples with non Audi or missing service history's that have mechanical niggles and electrical faults are much more normal because owners don't want to pay the high maintenance and / or repair costs that can often turn out to be more than the value of the car...the trade in price I received for my car didn't even cover the amount I spent on maintenance and repairs so the purchase price I paid was a 100% loss.

At the moment, there are much fewer problems and potential problems with the new shape car (2003 onwards) but time will tell and the only real thing to look out for (apart from all the usual mileage and servicing issues) is the timing belt (whichever comes first - x miles or 5 years depending on model) which must be changed by Audi and the engine management software needs to be upgraded / updated during each service so that needs to be done by Audi as well. Regardless of which model you buy (pre or post 2003), bits and pieces are expensive though so make sure you get at least a set of new Audi mats (

  7. Im Really happy so many people have tried the car. I think its a beauty. Ive heard about the triptronic issues aswell, but ill double check about that.

I was considering a bmw 850, but it has the same acceleration as the audi, and the audi has more room.

regarding getting it in germany, the danish goverment actually charges the 180% when you registrer a car. Doesnt matter if it is used or not. Silly place to live when you like cars:-)

I was a bit worried about the maintanence, but i think i will get one from a preowned car dealer. At least there will be a one year warranty on it then.

  8. I want a new car. Well, its not going to be new, sinces prices in denmark are silly high (180% tax on cars)

Im considering a 95-97 audi a8, with allweel drive, and the v8 engine.

The aluminum body appeals to me, since the roads are salted in the winter here. Would be great with out the rust issue:-)

Does anybody here have any experience with such a car? Im just curius if its reliable and wont have as many issues as my bmw 735 has.

I know its an old car, but some a worse than others. :)

  9. Well it looks like my watch and the $580 I've paid for it was a total wash I shipped the defective item back to Joshua and now I have no clue where it is.The tracking number they give me isn't really a tracking number supposedly it's Untraceable. And now I'm convinced I'll never see it again. It has now been 18 days since I shipped it and I don't know what to do.. I just want a working AP ROO like I paid for now what.Has this happened to anyone else?

I sent mine back to angus. I does take some time, but i got it back in working condition about 1,5 months after. Registrered mail takes quite some time to reach china, so i would give it some more weeks, before i wrote it off.

  10. Hello Guys. Being a pvd freak, i stumbled across a gen pam 028. These go for over 15.000 euro in europe, but one is availlable for 15.000$ in the states.

Sure it is a lot of money, but i am seriously considering it. Other than it being my holy grail watch, i suppose it can only go up in value from here. Since its not being produced anymore.

What are your thoughts? should i shouldnt i :p
