  1. But because he thinks it somehow casts doubt about his own masculinity. In short, "if a woman wears it, does that mean I'm a bit feminine"?

It's a big thing with men.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I like that . Feminine masculinity

Or as Beckham calls it, metrosexuality. ;)

If I could only persuade my wife to wear my watches....just imagine the combined buying force .Doubled.

Of course,I am in accord with females wearing "men's " watches.

The opposite thought makes me shudder .

Oh! I thought you meant something different for an instant, before reading below.

As in "Of course, I am in accord with females wearing "men's" watches. The opposite thought makes me shudder. Preventing them from wearing what they like, or controlling their dress habits is a barbaric custom", etc.

"Take a whiff of my new Chanel 19 Roberta, does it fit to my tie and shirt colors "

In some poorer countries that I have visited, sometimes these old favourites like Chanel, Miss Dior, Paco Rabanne, Pierre Cardin, Joy by Jean Patou are the only ones that are available or perhaps, 'cemented' in their minds as expensive perfume.

I'm not sure what is at work there.

Went to Haiti and the entire front desk hotel staff, male and female, reeked of Chanel No. 5. I felt amused, but sad at the same time.

    @DBR: Meow!

  2. No, please by all means, do elaborate on the 'wow'! An ironic 'wow' perhaps? As you said yourself, girls like nice shiney sparkly things, the F1 diamonds is the epitome of that, whilst remaining just the right side of the line in terms of overstatement. Unlike a Fiddy on pink gator.

Unless you have a problem with Tags per se? You're not alone although as a Heuer fan in general, I do tire of that misplaced snobbery, not that I'm suggesting that's the case here.

The Swatch? Fun, inexpensive and, well she is a creative after all :whistling:

Each to their own I suppose.

I could elaborate, but I'm feeling frisky. How about a game where you give me all your Tag Heuers and I hide them in my thongs?

  3. Been collecting for awhile now and I have always wanted to get a panerai just never got around to it, im beggining to like them more and more...any suggestions as to what should be my first? I like the 111, the 005, what are some others?

    Thanks in advance~

UB7, the reason there are so many models of Panerai, apart from the fact that they're exclusive in production numbers, and therefore it helps to have many versions of the marque -- is that we all seem to follow some kind of pattern when we're beginning our rep PAM careers.

111/112 -- The default beginner's PAMs. They are EVERYTHING the marque is supposed to be. They have sandwich dials which lume better than Pre-Vs. They have exposition casebacks. They are 44mm, which is easier to find straps for (itself, another adjunct hobby). And they are deeply, unbelievably versatile as such. The seconds for the 111 seem to appeal to the mechanically-inclined; the Bauhaus lines of the 112, to the aesthetes.

Then, you might choose a white-faced PAM, like the 113. Or perhaps an 005 or similar. They make us interested and yet comfortable at the same time, since it's not a big leap in difference.

Since we rep watch owners can, usually the Fiddy follows fast on the heels of the base watches. That's obviously not the case with gen owners, I've noticed on Risti.

So we get the Fiddy, and we are OVERWHELMED by it, and the 217. It makes you feel instantly different wearing one.

Then you start to wonder, what else is out there. Could I try a Radiomir? ME?

The 183 or the 190 soon follow.

The 177 or Titaniums are fantastic, people soon find. Then come chronos, and the Arktos and outsized-bezel watches like those. Finally, the Cali dials, which are SO much more covetted in the gen world, than in ours. The 232 is not far behind.

Somewhere along the line, we want vintage watches, or Tantaliums, or something REALLY special, which no one out there has.

You literally cannot own one Panerai. Eventually, the lure of the other models will get ya, especially in the rep world.

So you ask the most fundamental question of all.

Can we give you pointers? I just did, others have too.

But the journey begins with a single click, with your heart exposed. Have fun. :)

  4. Actually I must admit I see where Dani's coming from.

Nothing to do with all that psychobabble about masculinity, it just looks awkward and out of proportion, ironically the reason most people comment on seeing a woman wear such a watch. 40mm is passable, 44 depends on the woman and the wrist (Heidi can pull it off but then she can most things) but 47 is just wrong IMO. Call me a caveman all you like but I'm talking about aesthetic sense only.

But I also know where he's coming from, DBR!

    Just to clarify:

This thread was never in doubt about where I stood, yes? I want to be crystal about this. The question was completely rhetorical. OF COURSE women should wear Panerai watches!

The title was more in line with my questioning the choice of strap, which clearly was offensive to the history and spirit of the Panerai marque.

But since we've come to this point in the thread, why not! As Joan Rivers says, let's talk.

A woman wearing a Panerai is wearing it to make "a fashion statement" more than anything else.

Well, as are men wearing man bags. It's not common, it happens, sometimes it looks a bit odd, and yes, effeminate, but it shows a deeper awareness of fashion, and a more modern, perhaps more liberal sensibility towards masculinity.

You are right that women are making SOME kind of fashion statement, but not "more than anything else". The only times I think that, is precisely when I see a woman wearing "female" coloured straps, such as pastels.

It can be wonderful on the right woman, but like a purple paintjob on a Mercedes, it often throws a person's taste into question.

Like Madonna wearing a bloke's suit and smoking a big stogie. Deny it all you want, but it is male attention-seeking in its purest form.

It's almost as you're saying that it's a crutch, or to be more precise, some kind of tool whose main purpose is to attract males.

I'm sure everyone knows this, but women dress to impress other women, not other men. Most men don't notice watches. They notice the female form.

Each article of clothing we use today in the West, highlights the female form in some way.

Stiletto heels make women taller, and throw the pelvis forward, provocatively. Padded bras shape the breast into more rounded, therefore, more enticing (subconsciously maternal) contortions. Thong underwear separate each buttock, making male purses race.

I could go on. Indeed, I am taking PayPal donations to go on.

But I just don't see watches falling into that sexually alluring, male eye-catching category.

Bottom line is, women like pretty, shiny things. And you can't get prettier in an outsized male watch today than Panerais.

Else more women would be all over Bell & Rosses.

Not that I am representative of my gender, but I hate Bell & Rosses for myself. :yuk:

My GF really likes my 'chunky, manly' PAMs but on my wrist only. She will very occasionally 'borrow' one of my Rollies or Tags now and again, but essentially her own watch 'collection' consists merely of two, one for 'smart/work' and one for 'play', both aesthetically attractive but in an understated, proportional, and dare I say it, feminine sense....:whistling:

Ah, well, that's a question as you say, of proportionality, a topic which is central to personal taste.

There are absolutes as per Western tastes, of course, as the Greeks like Aristotle taught us to be aware of, but that is certainly more individualistic today.

    wac1218ba0852bv3.jpgsfk140eg4.jpg

Wow. Just wow. I'll keep it at that, since it is after all, your girlfriend and I've certainly learnt my lesson.

But let's just say, Tag Heuers and I don't fit. Panerai and I, fit.

    Sometimes it's just that simple.

  5. :whistling: When I am full of [censored] I wear my watch half way up my arm, too. At least it stays clean when it drops below waist level.

    OMG! Blasphemy! ;)

(I actually love President Kennedy. Yes, philanderer, almost brought the world to the brink of nulcear annihilation, etc. Who cares. He had style)

    Who buys the Pope watch?

Uh, the same group who presumably buys Barbie Dolls which you can dress up to look like nuns?

    nun2.jpg

    We Catholics are FUN.

When my wife and I took catholic 'classes' they made us buy one to help pay for bibles, paper, and pencils.

    LOL!

Still trying to figure that one out. Wait for the JPII edition. That one is going to blow your mind. A must for collectors.

    Way ahead of you, sunshine.

  6. I believe it's called a target-rich environment.

And they pink-slipped LARRY SUMNERS for the much worse offence of saying that hey, maybe women aren't as good as men at maths and science. But oh no, so long as Hitler would've wanted to engage in "a debate", Mr. Coatsworthy would've received him with open arms.

Interestingly, Genghis Khan turned Columbia flat down citing conflicting schedules.

  7. Where do you even get these pictures from V?!!! Hopefully, they're not your new acquisition~?! :p;)

Wellll. Now that you ask. ;)

I always thought JFK wore a Cartier Tank (edit: wow, he wore it high, almost half-way up his arm!).

    viia24co5.gif

Turns out, Google-searching turned up that he wore an Omega given to him by his friend "Grant"...

    kennedywatch1kc1.jpg

    kennedywatch2lx0.jpg

...which sold to the Omega Museum for U$350k. Marilyn Monroe had given him a gold Rolex, and that sold for "only" 120k. I mean, YOU'D THINK it would be the opposite, right?

    jackmarilynwatchqh2.jpg

Anyway, so I looked up this Fleabayer, thewatchandjewelryking, and saw ALL kinds of odd commemorative watches for sale, like who amongst us has not pined for an Eugene V. Debs watch!

    debsin1.jpg

(Love his listing description: "EUGENE DEBS WATCH! SOCIALIST! LEFTIST! Poh21")

And of course, who can live without a Harry Houdini watch! It even disappears every time you're in DC.

    houdiniwatchwy5.jpg

The seller's JFK commemorative watch didn't interest me.

    jfk1we9.jpg

Much rather have had the Prez' WWII Navy-issue pants, which also went under the hammer.

    jfkunderpantsaj7.jpg

That sold for $6,000. Just what the hell.

  8. Maybe you should stick to just one per day ;)

Anyway, I DID tell you to keep the Lempicka, but did you listen? :whistling:

    post-115-1190490969_thumb.png

Are you kidding me! I remember that crystal clearly! Erm, well, I remember someone telling me that. Didn't realise it was you, Docblackrock. :p

Thought it was Puggy. He knows why. :D

(Thanks for the advice! It's great advice. But I didn't take it, since I changed my avatar. Women)

  9. Can everyone please post their wrist shots?? i was originally going to make my first pam a 111H, but i'm trying to sell myself now on the fiddy.

    Post away please!

First, I do counsel you to get the DSN 111h as your first PAM. It's just so versatile, you'll love it.

Second, I hate when I post a question, and people answer with everything but what I asked. Oddly, this is what I am about to do now. :)

Not a wrist-shot in the bunch, but this is my repost of the "DSN Fiddy" thread, a month ago:

    Strap: Tootall (RWI), "B2", 125/75

    Case: Panatime.com (*bay)

(Hard to resist the DSN Fiddy, Alant...)

EDIT: Oops, thought you were targetting Davidsen's 111 specifically. May I just say, TWP's 217 is perhaps my favourite non-DSN PAM. It's beautiful -- and that's the Asian version! Do consider him, too, if you go Fiddy.

  10. I have quite a few of the Frasier DVD's,

    I prefer "Down Periscope". :)

and quite often notice the watches he has on. Never the same watch episode to episode either. Anyone have any ideas on what he wears, and is it because he is into watches in real life? Some of them look rather nice, I must say.

Hmm, good eye. I haven't watched the series since Daphne and Niles eloped in the charabanc, but according to yet ANOTHER "Watches in Movies" site:

15 Minutes (2001) - Robert DeNiro wears a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona in stainless steel - Kelsey Grammer wears a Jaeger Le Coultre Reverso with a stainless steel bracelet. A Rolex Day-Date in gold is also shown.

  11. Clearly a confused seller!

The only "Hot" spot state side is Texas.

The west and east coasts are rareley ever a problem.

We don't have to pay taxes, duties or fees before we get our watches, they just show up at the door.

It was the number one aspect of rep collecting I researched on 2 forums (RWG1, RWG.CC) thoroughly, before placing that fateful first order with Paul.

I read and read and read -- and clearly the US was nearly without problems about Customs.

Does anyone remember that thread where the guy in French Guyana had his package nabbed by Customs, and he had to look the boss straight in the eye and say, "Hey those aren't my watches", and walked away scot free?

Apparently, he was threatened not only with fines, but gaol-time, if memory serves. SCARY.

But smaller countries are indeed like that.

I liked that BobM posted what he did, living in Texas as he does. In fact, yes, I had heard there was a collector who no longer shipped to Texas. And to Canada...and to France, wasn't it?

@Ryyannon: Ah yes? Didn't know there was anything there.

  12. Just my opinion and yes big watches are fashion this days but panerais are very macho in their looks so maybe for some a 47mm is ok but in general i say no it dont look good.

    But each to his own.

That's okay, it's not a challenge or anything, Dani. I respect the viewpoint!

I actually do see what you are saying. How can any woman not?

But will you also admit that, as one reviewer in a site said, that when a Panerai goes on a woman's wrist, it ceases to be a big bold macho statement, and transforms itself -- into a sexy piece of jewelry? That this is why they look so good on women.

Well, he just said "it becomes a piece of jewelry on a woman". I filled in the rest. :)

Sometimes, though I'm NOT saying this is how you think, a man sees a woman wear a man's watch, and he takes affront at it.

Not because it says something about her. But because he thinks it somehow casts doubt about his own masculinity. In short, "if a woman wears it, does that mean I'm a bit feminine"?

It's a big thing with men, especially young men.

I have never understood that, because I'm not a man. But also, a woman's femininity is not judged by how unmasculine she is. A man's masculinity is judged by how unfeminine he is.

That's true across almost every human culture which has ever existed.

  13. I was interested in buying an uPO from an EU member, but s/he said:

"No U.S.A I'm afraid as I'm sick of the sillyness caused by your customs practises."

That's the first I've heard of that, since it's usually the other way around. Anyone have stories of US Customs' experiences regarding rep watches (specifically from Europe, since China seems to be okay)?

Seriously, it's important to know these things, good bad or ugly!

  14. I'm liking that :thumbsupsmileyanim:

    I love a good bargain! :)

With regards the lume, although I can't say for sure, I'd guess that a luminous dial is less noticeable to 'the enemy' than someone flicking on a torch to check the time as it's a constant level of illumination, and, in all honesty, the initial glow disipates pretty quickly to a more muted glow. Doesn't look like much to start with, but say you look at it after a while, it's still noticeable

Yes, and of course, it's good for underwater activity, for which watches like Panerai were meant.

    SPEAKING OF WHICH! :)

I have to thank you about the tip of the LED torch to activate the lume, in that other thread. Bought this on *bay, arrived just now.

    http://www.opticsplanet.net/streamlight-4a...lashlights.html

    Yellow/White LED one. $30, shipped.

And you were absolutely right, TeeJay. THE LUME COMES OUT FANTASTIC. This is putting the torch on each watch no more than 5-10 seconds each.

    DSN Fiddy

    fiddylume22septlq4.jpg

    DSN PAM 112

    pam112lume22septun2.jpg

What a difference from my first lume shot, under natural sunlight!

    lume8amdc6.jpg

Can you imagine if I place it on the watches for 30 minutes??

THANKS for the tip, guys! :thumbsupsmileyanim: :thumbsupsmileyanim:

@TeeJay below: Oh GREAT! Now he tells me! ;) ...will buy another. Might use my mother's tanning bed though, and save a bob or too. Out for the night, ciao and thanks!

  15. Just got a new one :) ....lol

Hey! Sammalone, you copied Swdivad's avatar. As I was observing that, I turned my head for a second, and then I saw this:

    freakoutxl8.jpg

"Wow, an avatar on the reply section too??"

Then I realised what it was...ah, the joys of living in insect-heaven Florida.

@Sammalone: I don't see why not! It's a free forum. Unless you're an VIP.
