It probably depends on the rep. After seeing some of the finer modificatons on watches from Messers Gladraider and Jetsons, I have come to realize that for me subs and seadwellers are most improved when you change the insert, crystal, and in some cases, the dial. All the stuff about crown guards, rehaut, etc.. those are nice to haves, but a nice domed crystal and aftermarket or gen insert on a vintage rollie makes an incredible difference. So for those watches it is the crystal the dial and the insert. For the PAMS I just think it is the overall fit and finish. I have what I consider to be a nice 029 with a 2892 movement.. I really liked that watch until I walked into a Panarai boutique and checked out some gens. I cannot really explain the difference... just a sginficantly better feel and finish I guess. It has been tough for me to wear my 029 since. And believe me, it is a nice watch and is more accurate than my gen rollie. In terms of movements, I have had no problems with the ETA's. I have 2 watches with Asian movements. My noob runs like a champ, my SMP GMT ... not so good. I can only think it is a crapshoot with the Asians I have no issues whatsoever with my 4th and 6th gen PO's . I love those watches.

Do you tell people at work that you are wearing reps?
eddhead replied to Jawo's topic in General Discussion
I have one that looks just like that, but she doesn't care about watches. Whenever I talk to he about them she rolls her eyes and yawns. she has more important things to think about and besides, I think my g/f is a bad influence on her. My experience in the office is simiar to those who wrote that most people do not ask. In fact, NOBODY asks me if the watch I am wearing is gen or not. If they did, I would would probably tell them the truth. -

well, what do you know... you can say "[censored]".. ? last time i tried to day "crap" the naughty word filter changed it to rubbish... gotta stay on your toes around here!

i tend to shun quartz watches as well, but i have seen Tag and B&M quartzes that were more expensive and less attractive than this watch. Even Cartier features some quartz roadsters.. and they are muliples of this in price.

Anybody ever see one of these before? I think I like it!! http://teno.com/netestchdiwa1.html

wow. that is incredible.

don't laugh but i might go for it.. they're ugly but who says you have to wear them? i have so many watches with so many different times, it would be nice to have a definitive source. besides, i could always work out with one.

Bracelet and case treatment for that genuine "feel"
eddhead replied to crystalcranium's topic in General Discussion
You know, I have thought about doing that, but most of my bracelets have the rollie like satin/brush stroke finish and I worry about polishing it out to a more glosssy look.. Truth be told, i already did that with a gen... admittedly I used a paste wax though.. still I wasn't happy with the look finish and I would hate to have that happen again. Thoughts? -
I have to say I am really lucky.. RWG 1 was the first site I stumbled onto upon gaining interest in this hobby. Just did a google, read through several of the sites that came up, and settled on that one. It is a shame (although I agree it may be necessary) that we may need to make this less google friendly going forward.. I may have never found this place.

Good for you.. Cheers

New Increased Shipping Rates from Our Recommended Dealers
eddhead replied to Tagger's topic in General Discussion
There is no reason why they should not be allowed to turn a reasonable profit on shipping. Shipping is part of the 'cost of goods' equation' and factors into the margin. As long as the profit is not exorbitant it is justified. Great idea, Dr. CC! -
second verse, same as the first "... I'm Enery the 8th I am..." Oh ... sorry. wrong poet.

I tried a gen on while i was in HK.. stunning watch.. goes for approx USD 5900.00 with a rubber strap in an IWC boutique.. they did not have the titanium strap, but figure an extra $900 or so if that is your preferance. They only had 1 in the shop, and it may have been the only one in all of HK. Tthey were not discounting it. ... none of the other watch stores I went to had any and I went to plenty of stores. Original is a modifed 7750 (or so I was told), so the ETA rep is probably as good as you're going to get in terms of passability FYI, You can get the non-cousteau aquamiter chronometer for about 2.9K in HK if you know where to look... lists at USD 4.2 K... most places in NY and I assume the greater US seem to sell at list if you can find them.. it is not easy... you can get them on the net... best price I saw was about $3.2K plus tax.. Again, this is with rubber strap. Titanium is + $900 or so.

boy you are fast... i doubt my poor arthritic knees and ankles would allow me to do a 10.5 10M ... nice.

Can't we all just get along? The guy asked a question about MBW Royal Oaks. what they were and more importantly where to find them. He received a varied range of responses.. Some politely hinted he should search more througly, others less politely castigated him. I think by the time he got to By-Tor's reply (which may have been a little stining) he was a bit defensive and thus over-reacted .. if you want to know why, go back and re-read some of the replies that preceeded that. They were unnecessarily sarcastic. Again, remember this guy sees a new site with comments and access to all this good stuff, but the MBW's are cloaked in this double secret mystery cape.. and most of what IS posted relates to rollies... he is looking for a Royal Oak... natural reaction is to ask what gives. SLAM!!! Sure, given recent events we need to be carefull, but he doesn't know that. So he gets defensive and reacts to some of the earlier sarcastic posts inappropriately.. .and it all goes down hill from there. Guys, this really is a very intimidating place for new comers. I know many of you who are truly expert in the trade get a lot of PM's from noobs... it must be a pain... but it is also a compliment. But in all honestly the PM issue really isn't germane.. he did not PM, he posted a new thread.

What he said. I wouldn't woo wooo you....

I completly agree . As I said, I can understand the reluctance to provide the info, but I just thought that some of the criticisms were kind of harsh. I'll go back to my hole in the wall now.

Look, in all fairness to mucrewbtp , as a newcomer he finds this board where he can access all kinds of information on where to find all kinds of watches and through this gold mind, finds the ability to source high quality items through the collectors and member trade pages. Than he reads about MBW's and all the great work you guys do to make them top-notch, but he cannot find where to get one. I mean really, you can search this site all day and perhaps NEVER find the source unless you know the right people How is he supposed to know that you need a decoder ring and a secret hand shake ? To him, they are just like the the other reps that he can very easily get access to... he knows no better. I can understand the reluctance to impart the information, but really, criticisizing for not searching when it is so hard to find the source that way , or he is our of line asking after only 3 posts when he has no way of knowing that these are any different than the other sources he can get his hands on... i think that is kind of harsh.

I find it interesting that YOU were intimidated, given the wealth of knowledge and craftsmanship you bring to bear. Honestly, if that is the way you felt, you can imagine how timid the rest of us must have been. I am not even sure of the date I joined the original forum ... sometime in 2005, but it was a good few months before I felt confident enough to post. 2 factors contibuted to my reluctance... 1. the knowledge level of the membership base is extraodinar and can be quite intimidating to a relative new comer. I have nowhere near that level of knowledge even today. It is at the same time both impressive and overwhelming. 2. Clearly strong long term interpersonal relationships exist between many of the members. Nothing wrong with this of course, in fact, the opportunity to meet new people and formulate new friendships is a motivating force to joining in the first place. And most of the members are very friendly and willing to engage and share their knowledge. But still, as a new comer it takes some guts to take the plunge. But when new members do so they bring new life and breadth to the board and keep it fresh and vibrant. I for one think new membership contributions are extremely important. From time to time we do see some noobie mocking and that is too bad. But I really think those instances are few and far between. For the most part the more knowledgable members are very generous in terms of sharing their experiences and expertise. At least they have been to me.

it is the movement. hard to find a 2893 with a much lower price tag. If you are a movement freak and many here are, this is probably a tough call unless you want to invest in modding the MBW

well, i just purchased a gen while i was in HK.. not the Cousteau, but the Chronometer with yellow highlights, and rubber strap Got to tell you, this is an awesome watch.. looks better in person and on a wrist than the IWC site would indicate. I will try to post some pics later on this week but i really am not good at that stuff

To all dealers! Do you have the perfect Cartier?
eddhead replied to vmena's topic in General Discussion
It is funny, I first joined the old RWG looking for a nice rep Santos ended up buying everything but, because I was not happy with what is out there. It is surprising we still do not have one.
