  1. Slask, yep now its getting too easy to pick the white dialled watch for me By-Tor I completely agree with you, those grey markers kill it for me, the gen dial looks way better. Damn that BTR looks good.. just look at that bracelet. The Discovery looks like a perfect companion, I might just wait for the new BTR for now (if there ever will be one) and try the Discovery. Too many positive comments about it and it looks stunning in the pics
  2. Is there word theres a new BTR in the making? I don't see what incentives the rep makers have to make it, as I don't think they sell in high numbers. I can't help but feel that if it wasn't for By-Tor Ebel wouldn't be known here like it is now However I think I might take your advice Col, if I have plans to get both, I might as well wait and see if the factories do indeed release a new BTR. In the meantime I could enjoy the Discovery... looks like Discovery it is then Interesting view Toad. I think my Nautilus fills the dressy/elegant steel watch category, and like you I'm currently into chunky watches at the moment (Skyland black dial has been glued to my wrist in the last few days I got it). I've always had a soft spot for Ebel, and I guess it doesn't help that the Discovery might be the most accurate rep ever made with excellent build quality.
  3. DavidBreitling, the Explorer II is a very nice watch. I enjoy looking at pictures of it, I have to check this one out in person. The only thing putting me off getting a rep is that apparantly the rep dial doesn't do this watch justice. According to By-Tor and I'm sure several others, this watch needs to have the gen dial to "understand" it TeeJay, thanks for your response bro, it helped me to consider other choices too How have you been? Thats an interesting opinion about the VCO, I recall way back when you got it, and then sold it to Victoria. A shame as in the pictures it looks awesome and classy, but as you said in reality it can turn out to be quite different. I'll have to think about that one carefully The Air-King is another lovely watch and very passable too (though I don't really care about passability . Its definitely understated, seldom seen on the boards and even the gen forums I think. Its hard to beat for its simplicity and versatility. However I think the DJ slightly edges it for me, I prefer the case and the bracelet with the rolesor clasp. The Nautilus HAS to be in black for me I've seen some pics of the white dialled version, and though it does certainly look very nice, I think the black dial is too good I owned a noob YM for a very short while courtesy of EuroTimez about a year ago. A lovely watch but I'm edging towards a white dial, and at the moment the GMTIIC is the Rolex sports watch for me. That Discovery just looks too good to me, and your comments about handling it in the flesh is further convincing me this is the one I should go for. Afterall, its not all that similar to the BTR is it?
  4. I've always worn black dialled watches because I think they suit me the most and of course they can be really versatile. I guess thats probably the main reason why they're usually preferred over white dials. However, recently I've been thinking that it might not be a bad idea to have one, just one, white dialled watch. The words elegant, classy and understated are usually attributed to the white dialled watches, and now I think I understand why.. I've been eyeing some pictures of the Datejust 116200 White stick dial on TZ, the exact same one that w.genzo owns and can't help but think "what a beauty!" Originally I thought about going for the black dial, but I have a MBK Nautilus which I think shares several similarities. Both have lumed stick markers, date and both are understated and elegant. Another white dialled watch that has really caught my eye is the awesome Ebel Discovery 1911. Of course the 116200 and Discovery are a completely different style of watch, but I think they both look excellent for different reasons. So for now the choice is between the 116200 DJ or the Discovery..I think. I'm leaning more towards the DJ for a couple of reasons, its going to be about $100 cheaper and also because I have plans to get the Ebel BTR (yellow hands) and can't help but think that the Discovery will be too similar to the BTR, even though the dial color is different. The VCO white dial is another one I've been thinking about, this watch looks amazing in the pictures and Genta's design is timless. (Sigh) I don't know.. what do you guys think?
  5. Is that the UPO 22mm rubber strap squeezed in between the lugs?
  6. I really miss this watch, its been with Rocketeer for over a month (if you look at near 9:00-10:00 you can see why) and I've only worn it for one day since I bought it over 2.5 months ago. I'm (patiently) waiting for its return:
  7. I'm anxiously waiting for the new version (if there ever will be one). I might break down and just get the current version.
  8. Try to have the datewheel overlay adjusted, it sounds like this popped out of place.
  9. Lol sorry I didn't catch onto that immediately! Good luck with your polishing/cleaning
  10. You can use a 1.2mm screwdriver, or get one of those spring bar tools with the small fork-end. You shouldn't have any problems with either of those.
  11. One of my favourite things to do 1)Invest in an ultrasonic cleaner. They are not that expensive; about $30 and no method can beat its cleaning power. This will make your bracelet EXTREMELY clean and is extremel handy. 2)After your bracelet is clean, lubricate it using the lubricant of your choice. Everyone has their own preferred one. I use sewing machine oil, others use vegetable oil or baby oil. Others use silicon lubricants or bike chain lubricant wax... 3)Work the lubricant into the links by twisting them around, and then let it soak for an amount of time of your choice. I personally only let it soak for about 10-20 mins and the bracelet feels MUCH better than out of the factory. I guess when you leave it soaking for hours the lubricant would work even better, just a matter of choice. 4)I then rinse it under the tap in very warm soapy water. But I don't over do it, just enough that most of the oil is removed from the surface. Now I have a very clean and lubricated bracelet which feels much better. Polishing/refinishing is my favourite part. For finishing mirror-finish areas, I use a dremel with 3 different compounds with 3 appropriate wheels. This is the only way I get a pure mirror finish completely scratch/mark free. The chemical stuff like cape cod, Mothers mag, brasso etc. doesn't even come close. The compounds also give the steel a unique shine as I guess they are specifically made for polishing metals like steel. For brushed areas, I have 3 different abrasive pads which are very similar to the Bergeon satin pads. They disintegrates upon using kinda like a rubber pencil eraser. The 3 grits are coarse, medium and fine and I use the appropriate one to get the finish as close as possible to the original factory finish. After polishing I either stick it in the ultrasonic if I used the compounds, or just rinse in soapy water if I used the pads. The above methods are low maintenance, the most expensive equipment being the ultrasonic (
  12. No problem, happy to help out. I've become somewhat of a fanatic lately regarding case/bracelet refinishing, and so researched a lot into polishing. I just wasn't happy with those chemical polishing products, they always left micro scratches that can be seen under a lamp. Plus when you're using them with your hands, it will take a lot longer to get results that aren't even satisfactory (well to me anyway). As a matter of fact the total cost of these compounds and wheels were a lot less than the brasso, silvo, cape cod cloths and Mother's mag, and they are far superior and will outlast any of these chemical polishes. Thanks tb, the UPO is a fantastic watch, but its wayyy better with the double AR. This mod alone will make the UPO "look" more gen and expensive than any other mod IMO.
  13. Thanks Harry, I'm planning to write up a detailed guide after my exams. I should have it finished not too long from now. In the meantime I did write a brief description of the process here: Cleaning required between different polishing compounds? Hope it helps
  14. I agree Rosnik, and thank you for the translation
  15. Thanks SR k222 packed up and left, with quite a few members' watch crystals/cases/watches. A real shame about what he did, as he did offer some real beautiful AR. Check out this thread, offers more insight: Is Jakub away? At least we still have Chief whose AR is too good in some cases ie even better than the gen.
  16. I personally think that the Omega PO is one of the most beautiful divers watches around. Omega certainly hit a home run with this one. I've owned several UPO's, but I was shocked when I received my first with double AR (k222) which I bought from b16a2. The AR is beautiful, the tint ranges from blue to purple to pink depending on the light and angle, practically the same as the gen. Its a real shame about what happened with him and that he's no longer around to offer us this amazing service. This small mod has a HUGE affect on the overall appearance of the watch. The dial can be seen in its "true colors" and the beautiful matte black finish is really shown off with the AR. It also makes it look at least ten times more expensive If theres only one mod I would recommend for UPO owners, its to get it double AR'ed asap, trust me you will like it a lot more! Photo of the UPO I received: (pic courtesy of b16a2) After wearing this version for a couple of weeks, I started looking at pictures of the impressive black bezel white number PO as worn by Daniel Craig. I realised that its a lot more versatile and decided that this would be the version for me. I also decided that I would like to have a gen crown and tube installed as it operates wayyy smoother when setting the time and date. This mod would also solve any thread stripping issues in the future (which the UPO is notorious for). I decided to try out the EU based watchmaker Domenico (dmuit) for these relatively small mods. I had read great things about him and saw examples of his work as posted by various members here, which impressed me to say the least. Well it turns out all of these things are true. Communications were very prompt and friendly, work turnaround time was very fast, he uses a secure postal service to UK and packages the finished watch very securely. His prices are competitive, even when I paid in EUR and finally the quality of his workmanship is first class IMO. I even think he fixed small things which I didn't specifically ask for, I'm sure he sanded/filed the new insert so it sits slightly recessed on the bezel like the gen and some other things.. I would definitely recommend him to EU members, you won't be disappointed. Yesterday I polished off all the swirlies on the mirrored parts of the case and bezel using a 3-step process using 3 different compounds and 3 different polishing wheels on a dremel. Its now completely free of any marks (even under strong light, which cape cod and other such products ALWAYS leave). If you do see any marks in the pics, its fingerprints which managed to get on even after I wiped the watch with a lens cloth Now onto the pics:
  17. Before you start let me just say you are about to resize the most difficult bracelet there is to resize I had to devise a somewhat crude method involving breaking a safety pin into 3 pieces to use as makeshift tools to adjust my bracelet With regards to your question, the point of the arrowhead indicates where the pin is to be re-inserted when putting the bracelet back together. Here is an excellent guide which you should find useful: HOW TO resize the most common bracelets
  18. Rep bracelets are not 904L, I think the large majority of them (or at least the reps that WE buy) are 316L. I have heard that some of the cheaper reps, such as those found in canal st. can have 205 grade steel (2 something). Some people who have allergies (most likely nickel) can break out with a rash when they wear 904L, but have no problems with 316L. Now it is possible that the rep makers who made the Discovery used a higher grade steel, and that could be causing the rash, or it could be something else. Try wearing it a little tighter than usual and see how your skin reacts to it.
  19. I started a similar thread quite a few months ago across all the forums but they got very little response. I think it was because at the time people had very little experience of them, but now more and more watches are being made powered by these. It's good to know that these movements have (mostly) good feedback from owners. I myself own a watch with one, and have yet to experience any issues. I think the one question we're all dying to know is can these be fully serviced, and if so, can they be expected to last as long as their gen counterparts after servicing. I recall The Zigmeister saying he had some issues with these movements after servicing a few, something to do with difficulty in regulating them. I think this is why he doesn't service them? I could be wrong, but I would like to know.
  20. Prefer the original dial much more. Most of the attraction to the Nautilus is the simplicity of the watch on the whole, and the dial plays a key part in that. I've had my MBK Nautilus for nearly a year now (I think) and I still love it as much as the day I got it. In fact, I just recently removed all the swirlies on the mirror finish parts of the watch, and now it looks awesome!
  21. Damn... nice gen.. or super franken! So the PO sucked you back in then?
  22. rep SMP e-bay uk It's not even an ETA model! A not-so-good asian 21J.
