Pugwash
Oh and if you're getting a laptop (MB/MBP/MBA) I'd REALLY recommend sporting that bit extra for a solid state drive (SSD). I like this advice. Unfortunately, I can't follow it myself as I need gigabytes over speed.
Neuuubeh
That's a Microsoft issue. DX isn't open to license. Will OpenGL and OpenCL do? I know. However as I mentioned earlier, lots of programs (specifically DCC) are Direct3d only, so we won't be seeing those on Mac .

What's DCC? Some CAD thing? Do you mean digital content creation? Autocad works very well on VMWare/Parallels, as does 3DSMax. Maya is OSX-native. Still, if you're at the bleeding edge, you're better off on a Windows PC.
docblackrock
I like this advice. Unfortunately, I can't follow it myself as I need gigabytes over speed. Pretty sure the SSD big boys (Samsung, Intel, Toshiba) have released a 512GB SSD, and there's a couple of others (OCZ) that have broken the 1TB barrier without any noticeable throttling. At that point, there's no justification for HDD, as you can just have a RAID setup - just think of the lightning fast R/W speeds, low -power, and ultra-reliability. Only factor is cost. Anyway, I think the arrival of the home server is not too far off - can see me having some type of domestic Xserve at some point in the next few years. docblackrock
Cost, and the fact I can only fit one drive in a MacBook. Realistically, I can either buy a 256GB SSD for £500, or a 120GB for £200 where a 1TB SATA would be £167 or for £70, I can get a 500GB. SSD isn't an option for me just yet, but one day it will be. Well for not much more than the price of the MB, you can have the MBA with 128GB SSD as standard, and if you wait a couple of months I believe 256GB will be a BTO. It's like night and day, the difference between HDD and SSD. Plus, SSD prices are dropping faster than house prices, and Apple recently signed a massive deal with Samsung, so Apple customers can expect to reap the benefits there. I'm just so done with HDDs, can't ever go back. Even adapted my Cube to use one - a fitting and elegant solution considering the standard lack of space and heat issues. Have you considered that maybe you just need less crap? That infamous donkey porn collection of yours for example Quality over quantity, size isn't everything, etc etc.

That infamous donkey porn collection of yours for example Quality over quantity, size isn't everything, etc etc. I've just archived 100GB of photos off my HDD as I only had 2GB free. I need the 320GB I've got. I shoot in RAW with a 10mp camera, and I take a lot of photos. Besides, the donkey porn you lent me is on an external drive. I also use RAW (pointless not to if you have a Leica) and yes my Aperture library is a big 'un. But I religiously take off onto one of several externals (and my TC for remote access), every couple of months. As you know well, leaving such a small % of HD capacity free will cause your machine to slow down more than anything. As for the donkey porn, yeah nice try to deflect your depraved nature, but let's not forget it wasn't me who went AWOL for 12 months citing "other interests"

Pugwash
Whats the point of getting a Mac to just run Windows on it? I might just as well make a Hackintosh and run MacOS on a normal PC if we look at it this way You don't get a Mac just to run Windows on it. The point is to get the Mac build quality and user-experience (Mac OS X and all the apps) yet still be able to work with the Windows-only apps. If that doesn't appeal to you, that's fine. 90% of people feel the same way.
andreww
True that nothing ever gets settled in these types of discussions, but there is one thing that you will always notice. You will always see a number of PC users that have switched to mac and state that they will never go back. Rarely do you ever hear of a mac user trying a PC and vowing to never return to the land of Apple. Apple's customer retention numbers are astounding, and have been for a long time. There is a reason for that I'm long past trying to recruit "switchers", so if you are too stubborn to give a mac a chance, thats fine. Oh BTW, Im a mac systems administrator looking after about 25 macs. It is very rare indeed that I have to look after any issue related to a macs hardware or its operating system. In fact, 90% of my issues are problems with MICROSOFT Office programs, or problems with our Microsoft Network.

benew0
The only real problem with MacroHard is by the time XP worked right, here comes Vista, by the time Vista works right, here comes 7. What's the point of Vista anyways? Half of your system resources get used to make the GUI look pretty. There's always linux! I play around with Ubuntu on my second computer. It works well. I don't game anymore so I don't need a super powerful system. I have got to disagree my theory is that they released vista in order to force everyone to upgrade their computers hardware. Now that everyone has this new hardware they can actually make good use of it with Windows 7. Ironically I have Windows 7 installed on my Mac and it boots up faster and has better battery life then Mac OSX Leopard. What is also really tough for windows is dealing with the fact that people will try to install Vista/Windows 7 on a PC that has 512 gb ram, no video card, and a p4 processor, and expect amazing results. On the other hand you have Mac who not only controls the user software experience but also the hardware experience. This coupled with Macs generally having the best hardware they just seem to have more longevity

docblackrock
No, you have Apple. The Mac is the computer, Apple is the company. Common mistake. Having always used Macs, I'm always surprised by this 'mistake', but seems to be an increasingly common one. Anyway some vaguely interesting info on the origin of the Mac name Mac <- Macintosh <- McIntosh apples (where Jobs and Woz derived the product name from since they had a company called Apple) <- John McIntosh <- McIntosh surname <- "Mac an toshach" <- "Son of the Chief"

highoeyazmuhudee
+1 for a Hackintosh since they share common hardware installing OSX on a PC is now possible...ALL of the mac, NONE of the price. I can't fathom HOW someone can buy expansion RAM from APPLE, when they can get the EXACT SAME SODIMM module from their local computer shop for 4X LESS. Ok, let me clarify: No-one that would buy RAM as a separate component would buy RAM from Apple. The non-techies that have no intention of fitting their own RAM buy their Macs pre-filled, but these are the people that would pay Sony or Gateway to fit RAM at stupid prices as well. docblackrock
No-one buys RAM from Apple. I once bought RAM from Apple. Or rather I should specify, I made my previous employers do so for my benefit Hilarious really. As soon as you spec extra RAM, it becomes a BTO order whereupon your machine is shipped to another location to be "custom built". If the 3x extra cost doesn't do it for you, the extra 3 week wait will. Oh and not to mention you can't return the unit for refund or exchange as it's a BTO. Genius.
