Jkay
The problem with the A8 in the USA is that it's completely under the radar. Only 2000 a year are sold in all of North America. The body, interior, and engine are absolutely bullet proof. The transmission is a problem, but there's a handy fellow in Chicago who came up from the Audi online community (think BK, I suppose) and has a nice little transmission shop which specializes in rebuilds on the A8. Excellent prices for members of the community. About 1/6th what Audi charges. Expect trans issues between 100k miles and 200k miles, requiring a rebuild. I got mine after it's 3yr corporate lease expired from some fat cat CEO in NJ via an Audi specialist broker .. paid 27k. I suppose for that price I could have had a brand new Saturn sedan .. or a world class flagship saloon ... no contest, really.
Jkay
Here's a tasty number on OEM Lamborghini wheels from the Audi forums. BTW for people looking at A8s .. the S8 is the sport model @360hp and lower gearing for more OOMPH. The A8 is @300 or 320hp depending on your model year. I get 28MPG @ 70mph avg in my A8, so I will keep the higher gearing hehe.
PeteM
Another very cheap buy if your looking at the A8 is the VW Phaeton now that can be bought for nothing compared to the drive away price when new and all the goodies it has, it has all the Audi gadgets as the A8 or you can move down to that long wheelbase Skoda cant remember the model but again great value!! With VW/Audi BQ
By-Tor
incredible prices for what used to be my dream car when i was a kid. when it comes to jaguar, i'd love to have one of these I agree. That's a classic if anything is. There is actually one very good looking black one for sale in Germany right now but that V12 scares the sh*t out of me. If something breaks you're in trouble. But that station wagon version... hmmm...

HauteHippie
How's the reliability of VWs these days? I haven't really paid much attention to them. But that Phaeton is not a bad looking car at all.

By-Tor
I don't consider myself a huge BMW fan anymore (I loved the E28 and old 6/8-series), but I drove my friend's 2001 BMW 540i today (E39), and that's gotta be one of the best sedans I've ever tried. It actually drove much nicer than the newest 5-series. Awesome compromise... E39 was comfortable like big Peugeot's and Citroens but also sporty and "rough" like the sports cars. Much nicer than my company Mercedes E200 without a doubt. It's a great car and definitely affordable. And despite being 10 years old, it was very modern but still had the old BMW "spirit". I actually fell in love with this car... maybe I'll buy one for my wife. PS: Not my friend's car in the picture but it looked like this one.
