Nanuq Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 It's a little wintery today here in the arctic wilderness, and predicted to get truly ugly this afternoon. It's already beginning.
redwatch Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 Pfffff.....only 11 degrees F?? Time to break out the dog sled!
praetor Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 (edited) Winter storms are actually a good time for a nice warm cocoa... edit: I keep reading Fahrenheit as Celcius!! Canadian metric system ftw! Edited April 7, 2011 by praetor
Nanuq Posted April 7, 2011 Author Report Posted April 7, 2011 Ah, but the pooches won't run when it's windy. At least not THIS windy.
redwatch Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 Yeah the wind is definitely a killer! I do miss dog sledding though! I used to do it fairly regularly in Northern Ontario. Such a blast. I love snow camping. I love dogs. And I love to hike. Perfect combination! And man those dogs loved to run! I had the pleasure once to take our tour leaders team out for an afternoon. 7 dogs in incredible shape. The snow anchor and foot brake could not hold them back! And since they didn't know me very well, they didn't respond to my commands like they did when he was driving the sled. But they were so incredibly fast!!! Such a rush
Nanuq Posted April 7, 2011 Author Report Posted April 7, 2011 But they were so incredibly fast!!! Such a rush Check this out, from the world championship races a couple months ago. These guys are busting over the top of a downhill with a 20% grade and the driver's eyes tell it all... "the brake isn't working so it's do or die"
whoever Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 some summer thoughts for you fellas in the great north! I was in Spitzbergen a few years ago, and was then bit by the virus....i'd love to come visit your region!! i'd give a lot to trade our summer for this....

I've seen them do some crazy stuff with those dogs & sleds!
Nanuq Posted April 7, 2011 Author Report Posted April 7, 2011 some summer thoughts for you fellas in the great north! Here's what "Summer" looks like here... find a spot where most of the snow has melted off and take a snooze!

KB Posted April 8, 2011 Report Posted April 8, 2011 Hey hang out the washing, nothing like a good breeze to dry the clothes. Ken
Nanuq Posted April 8, 2011 Author Report Posted April 8, 2011 Well we survived our little breeze today, it scoured all the packed snow (8" of it) off the driveway down to glare ice. It blew all the snow off the yard and left a 10 foot drift on the downwind side of the house, blocking the garage door completely. An hour with a shovel and Brunhilda the snowblower fixed it. Now there's a fire in the stove, a nice Shiraz in the cup, and the stars are coming out. Life is good.
rek001 Posted April 8, 2011 Report Posted April 8, 2011 Whew, I just had a flashback of the blizzard we had in Chicago February 1st.
