JWR Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 Was wondering if anyone could shed a little light on the appropriate glue and/or technique to use to install a new PAM crown. I assume that simple loctite threadlocker is insufficient for this job...
Dario33 Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 I didn't think any glue needed to be used?
ubiquitous Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 Loc-Tite should be sufficient for installing the stem to the crown. Just a small dab on the threads...
Katerchen Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 I assume that simple loctite threadlocker is insufficient for this job... If Loc-Tite is too weak this will do the job Mix 50/50 or 60/40... test before use! Just take a little drop it will get hard as hell... Even bonds metal. George
JWR Posted October 12, 2006 Author Report Posted October 12, 2006 Loc-Tite should be sufficient for installing the stem to the crown. Just a small dab on the threads... Really? I figured the turning action of the crown to wind would be enough to work that loose...
ubiquitous Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 Nah... I do that on every Rolex genuine crown swap I've done. Never had one break loose.
haveblue Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 i agree with ubi.....Loc-Tite Red is pretty tenacious stuff!! it holds great for something like this. the blue Loc-Titehowever, is pretty weak and is good to use on the stripped PAN lug screws and other things that you will want to loosen sometime in the future.
alligoat Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 If you thread the stem into the crown with glue and you have a problem with, say the crown screwing down on the case tube later on, you could end up having to get a new crown and stem, if they won't come apart. Recently, the crown on my 1680 gen kept coming off of the stem when I'd set the time. When I took it to my watchmaker, he played w/ it and it kept happening. I asked him if he could glue the stem to the crown and his reply was, "No, you wouldn't want to do that." So I ended up w/ the old Rolex update, a new 24-7030-0 tube and a 24-7030 crown. If you're going to use glue, I would think that it would be wise to start w/ the weakest, say Loc-tite blue and work your way up, if you have to, to red and then maybe contact cement, or GS hypo-cement. I avoid Superglue and epoxy, unless I'm gluing it together forever and don't care.
