Start and progress of my 16800 build....

Decided to build an 16800 after I have seen all those nice builds here lately.

I had the opportunity to buy a gen 16800 dial and bezel insert. All-though not in very good condition I saw that with a little TLC these would make a great base for my build.

Received both today and started working on them right away.

Dial when I got it:

5F7CBF2A-97B0-4F70-AFFD-8E4591A2471B-118

It is a glossy dial with WG surrounded indexes. As you can see it turned matt already and the Tritium in the indexes was partly gone.

I am not planning to change anything about the dial besides the missing Tritium. I love the patina caused by turning matt. So I relumed the indexes with a special mix off lume, pigment and binder.

This is the result:

Here together with bezel insert.

I am going to use a Y3135 movement for this build and a ST 3135 case. Both maybe not correct for a 16800 but no one can tell from the outside.

Next step will be reluming hands. Still waiting for those as well for the case and movement.

Gen none LEC crystal will be used.

Still looking for a good bracelet.

I will post updates when I get parts in and assemble more.

Worked on my dial a bit. Trying to get the Tritium look as perfect as possible.

In real live the Triangle looks much better.

Same here. It looks like the White Gold surroundings are hand made. Can anyone confirm this?

Nice!

Did I told you this baby will glow? It will!

Don't you worry, can't be seen during the day.

  • 2 weeks later...

Look what dial Matt had for me.

Very nice, thanks a lot Matt. (don't have it yet but hopefully next week).

Now I have material to build two 16800's.

Movements: Y3135 and A3135 (serviced by Domi).

Cases: WM9 V1, Euromariner, TC 16610 and ST 3135.

Crystals Gen (non LEC) and Clark (non LEC)

Inserts Gen Lumi and Gen Tritium

Dials: Gen tritium original and Gen tritium relumed. Both matt with WG surroundings.

Bezel: TC 2x, WM9 V3, Euromariner, one unkown.

Hands: Sean relumed to match dials

Crowns: Gen with clark tube, TC or WM9 or Euromariner with standard tube.

Bracelets: None so far.

Now what would be the best combination? I know both will be a sort of hybrid because I don't have a 16800 case (yet, will order one this month).

One will be using the ST 3135 case, gen original tritium dial, gen original tritium insert insert, TC bezel, gen crystal, gen crown Y3135 or A3135 (don't know which one I have to take) and Sean relumed hands.

Don't know about the other one, I think I will try to fit and see what fits best where.

I'd call this watch an early 16610- 16800s and 16610s both used the same dial- the tritium w/ wg surrounds- from 1984 til 1998. Your case is 16610 and your dw is 16610 w/ the closed 6/9s.

Bracelet would be a 93150 with 501B ends for the 16610 and 593 ends for a 16800.

Or just leave the 93250 on there and say it's a bracelet replacement- although the center links of the SELs look a wee bit rounded over.
