Watch talk in the poker room....

Recommended Posts

I recently started a thread in the Rolex forum about when I helped an old man with his DD in the poker room....since then I have had numerous conversations about watches while playing poker....

The poker room where I play at is crawling with Rolex, Omega, Breitling and Panerai....

Because of this I have decided to start this thread and keep it updated regularly with the different watch related experiences that I have in the poker room....I am now playing poker full time....atleast 5 hours a day....my job job is for extra money and benefits....

I entered the poker room today at 4:30 wearing my rep Rolex Sub with blue bezel and dial and had to wait about a half hour to get a seat on the 1-2 no limit table....

About 3 hours later a fella sat down in the 1st seat position and soon after that I noticed that he was wearing a Rolex sub....after a few glances I was able to see that he was wearing the gen of my watch! Oh my god....I have to admit it was a little embarassing because of how bad the gold was on my watch compared to his AND the color of my bezel and dial....My watch was way off....gold and blue was FAR too bright....

But this did not stop me from engaging in conversation....so I says to him while point at my watch...."Dime a dozen I guess."....he looks at my watch and acknowledges that we are wearing the same thing....he either did not notice that mine was a little strange looking or he was cool enough to not call me out....

A little while later he asks me if I like watches and I said that I was a collector....he said that he had just recently purchased a BERTOLUCCI....I told him that I had never heard of it before....he described it as a cross between an Omega and Corum....he also said that the quality rivals that of our Rolex's....

I assume this is what he bought.....

I asked him if he had any Omegas....yep....he owns four....all seamasters....3 vintage and one modern....geez man....I dont even own a gen....hopefully if my poker skills get a little better I can afford one....

BTW....I did walk out 7 hours later with $400 to the good!

Congrats on the $400 positive balance. I love a good poker game.

And yes...all kinds of discussion comes up in a game. I had a similar event.

I told a guy that he had a nice watch, one time in a game. It was some sort of dress watch that I'd never seen before. And he says: Yea, I love it, but it's not as nice as yours. I can't afford something like that. I was wearing my rep best SeaDweller...and just smiled.

I think I may have been up about $50.

A friend of mine has been playing regularly for the past few months (he makes around $2,000 each time minimum, on the lower tables) and said a few times people have started talking watches and he felt out of place with his old Accurist quartz - saying I'd have been right at home in those conversations.

One guy said he had a sub that Sean Connery wore for James Bond (though I don't kow if he means the exact same watch or a vintage that is the same - my friend isn't playing on the high [$20k] buy-in games yet) and he said there are lots of Rolexes and Omegas and others he doesn't really know. He's not really into watches, just knows about them through me. He was saying I should go with him tonight cos he wants to win more money!

This confirms a theory of mine (well, a lot of others have the same theory): even a gen owner can't call out a rep when only a couple feet away.

My thought is that gen owners buy the real thing, and don't really think about reps. Perhaps somehow they think a fake is obvious (I've been reading on the intarwebs about 'spotting a fake' and they're woefully under/misinformed compared to what I read here).

We're the ones who obsess over the little inaccuracies. I bet just about any gen owner, unless a true 'enthusiast' who owns the same model as your rep, will not be able to call it out as a fake. Now in side by side comparison they'd probably catch you easily, but who, aside from fellow rep owners, is going to say "let's compare"?

I did ask him if it was an automatic and he said that it was....quartz was the first thing that crossed my mind also....

Yes 1-2 NLH is a grind....a lot of tight players....

This one guy (who practically lives in the poker room) keeps urging my to step over to the 3-5 NLH table....but the rumor has it that those guys have way too much money and chase every hand down to the river regarless of risk....I think ill stay away....I hear the 10-20 down at the Bellagio is a good game....maybe someday....

I dont get off work untill 10pm tonight....but ill try and hit the tables for atleast 2 hours....ill keep ya guys posted and thanks for the responses....

Tough to make a living at 1-2. 5-10nl or 2-5nl game at caesar's or Wynn is very good. many a drunk tourist willing to pay your rent.

1-2 game here in south florida is exactly the opposite. People are playing NL like it's $2 limit. The worst play I have ever seen in my life.

Yes theat is a good game, however the 2-5NL is tighter thatn your 1-2. I couldn't get anywhere in that game. Caesar's is the best poker room in Vegas IMO.

I am averaging +$200 a day....so if you count the income from my job (Which is a struggle right now) and poker I am making it....not with a lot of extra money at the end of the month....but still making it....

I am gonna have to move to the strip here pretty soon and take advantage of the tourists....Caesars and Wynn are probably good choices....I hear the Mirage can be good also but there is A LOT of really good players down there....its just that the casino I play at is literally 3 minutes from my house....

I am probably the worlds worst poker player... I simply dont get it. But my little brother has gone from working in construction 12 months out of the year in Ohio to playing poker 6 months out of the year and vacationing the other 6 months. Since he lives very cheaply I guess he puts alot away.

I sat one night at a tournament in Columbus and watched him play for about 8 hours. He walked away with a few thousand dollars.

As a watch person, I passed the time by checking out peoples watches. I realized that people in Ohio really dont give a crap what they wear on their wrists, and that Casio was the brand of choice! There were a few Rolex, I never saw a Panarai or Omega.

I agree. As I really like this forum I already read one or two things about Submariner reps but one day I still could not tell whether the guy at the same table is wearing a gen or a rep. I looked at the rehaut, the bezel, the crown guards and the bracelet but it was 1 meter away from me so I did not have a close look therefore I just could not tell for sure. This is the same with other watches. For example if someone is worried that the cross on the VC Overseas is a bit too high - forget it, probably you will never ever meet someone who can tell the difference. It

Mirage is GREAT! I was there for a week last year around labor day weekend, and made about $400-500 each day. Just about paid for my trip thanks to the Mirage!

Did well at the Monte Carlo as well... Lots of drunk players. As long as you play your own game, and not get on tilt from the variance that river chasers put into the mix, you'll do well.

Speaking of poker, where did everyone learn.. and where did they learn to become good at it?

A friend of mine gave me a big stack of poker videos....including Howard Ledderer and Phil Helmuth videos....also a couple of Mike Caro and David Sklanski vids....I watched the videos over and over and over again....I also learned a lot from my friends and the internet....It also takes a lot of sense and intuition....in short you have to know when you are probabaly beat....

I won my first poker tourney about 1 month after getting the videos....

I dont think I will be able to play tonight....I have to write a couple papers for school and I dont get off work until 7pm....

I learned on my own. Read Super System front to back, played with play chips on stars, lost $50k of real money and then one ay it clicked. If you really want to be a full time pro you need a bankroll. I have been on plenty of ups and downs and plenty of long runs good and bad. I have had weeks where I was up $25k online and down $10k the next. No matter how good you are running you will run bad sooner or later.

This post is long....but good!

Okay....today was a lot better for me....won back all the money I lost the other day + profit....and heres what happened....

I decided to take a trip down to the strip today and see if I could make a little dough at the Bellagio....

When I entered the poker room I was a little surprised how small it was....compared to other poker rooms I have seen....at any rate I asked to get on the 1-2 NLH table...."Sorry sir, the lowest limit table we have here is 2-5 NLH."....

I was a little concerned because I have never actually played 2-5 NL before....I decided to get on the list anyway and give it a shot....

After waiting about a half hour I decided to give the Wynn Casino a call and see if they had a 1-2 NL game....the lady said that they did and so I put my name on the list....but I hadn't fully decided if I was gonna go down there because I was curious about the 2-5 game....

While waiting I spoke to a guy waiting by the door wearing a Daytona....SS white dial....I asked him if he was waiting for the 2-5 and if had ever played it here before....he said "Oh ya....all the time"

I said that I have never played it before and that I was a little concerned about playing against people who pre-flop raise $25-$50 often....he said with a little chuckle...."It happens!"

So after a few more minutes I decided to head on down to the Wynn and get on the 1-2 NL....

Upon arriving nearly 45 minutes after being put on the list....they called my name! I was right on time....but something was a little strange....it was a 1-3 NL game NOT a 1-2....hmmm....I have heard about this game before....$1 and $3 chips.....oh well....Ill give it a try....

I played for about 90 minutes....It is the stupidest fkn game ever....$3 chips dont compute well in my head....or the dealers head....or ANYONES head for that matter....the action was seriously lame and the only good thing about that table was the guy across from me wearing a Hublot BB....

This one....

hublotbb1.jpg

I asked him how he liked his BB and he said it was a great watch....the guy next to him had the nerve to ask him how much it cost! Idiot....

He answered...."More than all the money on the table!"....we had a good laugh....

I finally got tired of the stupid game....and if you are new to poker I suggest you stay away from it....not a good idea to learn poker with $3 chips....

I got brave and decided to head over to the 2-5 NL game on the other side of the room....kinda funny....I left the Bellagio in fear of the 2-5 and ended up on one anyway!

When I sat down there was a couple of guys with monster stacks....I was in the last seat position....the guy in 1st seat had well over $1400 in chips AND a healthy stack of $100 bills cash....another guy had over $1200 and the other guys had like $400 - $800 in chips and some cash....

I though I was up against some serious players....but after only a few hands I realized that they were a bunch of idiots....only a couple of decent players at the table....

I took down a couple of nice pots....both over $400.....then....the monster came....

I was small blind....dealt JJ....

The dude with the hugh stack of dough raises to $30....5 callers before me....I raised to $60....AND EVERYONE CALLS!

Flop comes QH 6D 8S....nothing special....I check and the dude bets like $50....2-3 callers including me and the turn card hits....

JACK!!!

Now I got trip jacks....

I check and the dude bets $150....everyone folds except for me with a call....

The river card is a 6....

So the board is Qh 6D 8S JC 6S

I have a full house....Jacks full of 6s....pretty deadly hand....

So I make a weak bet....$100....enticing him to think that maybe im a little scared....

He raises $250!!!!

I call and he turns over a 6 for trip 6s....

The full house was a crusher and I took down the whole pot....

After only 1 hour I was up $1000....and that guy finally lost all of his dough.....except for a few $100 bills behind where his stack used to be....lol....what a donkey....

Not a bad experience for first time at the 2-5 table!!
