wombat247 Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Of course, who the hell would want one in the first place? http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1224118969...icle-outset-box
takashi Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I want one... Seriously, it's a very very nice watch.
FxrAndy Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I like them to be honest, it will never be repped any way because of the in house movement and if they did you would spot it as a rep way before you got the UV light out
takashi Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Agree with Andy. If this is replicated, will be the day when pig flies.
fat.tail.event Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I think its interesting that they start off with the VC and then throw up a pic of the new, monster PAM depth gauge....kind of a disconnect for me on that. On another note...are F.P. Journe's another timepiece in the 'too difficult to rep' category? I am always so impressed with his work, and then two or three thoughts later I find myself thinking...way too complicated, ornate to start mass manufacturing in China. Thoughts?
greg_r Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I want one... Seriously, it's a very very nice watch. +1. VCs are the shiznit.
Ztech Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I too locked into that PAM 1950 with the depth gauge. Simply awsome! Oh, the VC is way cool too.
Shundi Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Visible in house movements seem to be the way to go in the current wave of reps to prevent counterfeits or, at least, make it easy to spot them as such... I wouldn't be surprised, given a year or two (or three) what the Chinese will be able to do with movements... if they're capable of tourbillions who says they can't replicate a movement like the Rolex 3135 fairly accurately? We're already seeing cutout rotors and maroon reversing wheels on some very very cheap movements... if the last few years have shown us anything it should be that the sky's the limit in this crazy industry...
wombat247 Posted October 16, 2008 Author Report Posted October 16, 2008 I too locked into that PAM 1950 with the depth gauge. Simply awsome! Oh, the VC is way cool too. Seriously. The PAM could definitely be repped and when it is I'll probably buy one.
RLudlowe Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 If the security features can't be seen by the naked eye, who cares? I don't care if an AD with special infared lights and microscopes can tell if it's a fake, I care if the hot Flight Attendant in the dark, smoky airport bar can tell it's fake - After three cosmos. All the watch needs to do is get her to say "hey, nice watch" - I'll take it from there.
chris5264 Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I'm not sure any watch has been really replicated succesfully. Even the very best, customized Rolex will not pass the test on the gen forums, so IMO, none have been replicated yet.

Logan Posted October 17, 2008 Report Posted October 17, 2008 One of my other interests is CNC machine tools. Its used to be the chinese tools were pretty inaccurate and only good for low grade hobby use.. now they are starting to nip at the heels of the big names, and for a fraction of the price. The brand name watchmakers are pretty much all using CNC manufacture now.. despite what the pictures in the brochures like to pretend. The better your CNC the better the stuff you can make. That particular VC is obviously a tough one, but I do predict we're going to see some reps of stuff we think is impossible right now.. and I think it'll happen rather quickly too.
Bibbs Posted October 17, 2008 Report Posted October 17, 2008 Visible in house movements seem to be the way to go in the current wave of reps to prevent counterfeits or, at least, make it easy to spot them as such... Could do what they did for the latter "fast and furious" films. Take photos of good engines, print them and then put the pics behind the grills etc of std cars.
Logan Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 The recent Lange and Patek reps are pretty much that.. just a sheet of nicely finished metal stuck over the crap movement, looks vaguely like a finished movement if you don't look to close.
Shundi Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Investing in CNC technology is the way to go for the Chinese IMO...it worked with ETA (leading to the clones) and I have no doubt it'll lead to better cases, etc.
Genrep Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Things will always get better. With Chinese ingenuity, it will happen. Remember all the things folks thought were impossible that we now take for granted.
chronoluvvv Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 if they rep it, they rep it if not, who cares ? there's scores of others
arty909 Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 These two could probably be added to the list, don't you think? Corum Golden Bridge- And the Jacob & Co. Quentin- Cheers, Arty
