You'd be screwed in a heartbeat if you jumped in!
-
Man, it sounds like Oliver has already done this a time or two! Of course, the big "IF" is can you get the case at a reasonable price? Just thinking out loud: Take a late model Date, w/ a 3135, say $1750 Sub case at say 600 Dial 200 Hands, stem, misc 100 Total in the watch $2650 Sell on ebay at $3,400-3,500 and you have a decent profit for a days work! And you'd realize more by selling the Date case, hands, etc!
-
When you say red dial, are you thinking of a 1680 red submariner? No, that dial will not fit a 16610 case, it's too small. The 16610 dial is slightly larger. Can't tell you about the ETA- isn't it a question of whether or not the stem will line up w/ the case tube? A mid 90's 16610 would have had a 3135 movement, I believe. The 3035 had a short life in the mid 80's- like in the 16800, etc. and was replaced by the 3135 around '88 and on.

If you don't have a tool, take a piece of duct tape and wad it up, press down on the caseback and turn counter clockwise. If the caseback isn't screwed down too tightly, it should turn and then you can get it off. Just reverse the process to put it back on, remembering that it won't be too tight and you may have to get it tightened later.

This must be a trick question!

Here's a William Marshall Submariner, from Switzerland, with 200m, 660 ft WR and a 2824-2 ETA movement. I picked one up on ebay for $200 and some change. I bought it for swimming and diving so I wouldn't have to wear my real Sub and we all know that reps aren't waterproof, but I'm working on that next.

Will There Ever Be Reps Of Watches Like This .....
alligoat replied to Perfectionist's topic in General Discussion
How about w/ push button subdials and a moon that keeps pace w/ the hour hand! -
Ah, yes, we all know the perils of wearing a rep, especially a Rolex. And ss blue subs are scarcer than hen's teeth. Bet he doesn't wear that watch much anymore! At least w/ these forums, we all know what is good and what's bad. And some of our stuff is damn GOOD. I love it when my watchmaker looks at my WM and says, "That's real, isn't it?"

Yellow gold is the problem, getting a color that looks right is tough. I recently got a Day-Date in gold and I ended up taking the bracelet off and putting on a leather strap w/ a gold Rolex buckle. The case color itself is OK, but not perfect. Other details of the watch are very good, dial, mag, yellow background on the day and date wheels, eta movt and good pricing. People just have to realize that gold plating may not be perfect color wise. But it wasn't $7000 either!
-
Yes, tell us about the parts and fitting them to a TWG watch. I'm amazed that a 127 would fit. Your date mag is huge- looks awesome! And did you use white lume to tone down the yellow? I've got a TWG 5512 which I stained, but I've also thought about reluming w/ the white. A smaller gen crown would be the only other thing that I think would look good. You're off to a great start.

Yep, Jet, Here's a link to a white faced GMT w/ the closed 6 on the date wheel: http://forums.timezone.com/index.php?t=tre...46765&rid=0 I'd really love a GMT w/ the white dial and black bezel w/ gold numbers, and a TT oyster bracelet
-
@ Jetsons, Yeh, now that I think about it, date wheels for the 1570 series of movements varied all over the place. I have a 1500 gen Date (1966) and it has closed 6's and 9's and round top three's on a white background. Original. Saw a gen DRSD with the same datewheel not too long ago. And then the subs have the flat-top 3's and open 6's and 9's, on a silver background. There's also the open 6's and 9's with the round top 3's. At least w/ Rolex, you can count on them being inconsistent, which is good for us rep guys

Tube Insertion Tool For The 24-7030 Tube (sub, daytona)
alligoat replied to the collector's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
@ Lancelot Which original tube- the Rolex new style or the Rolex old style? -
Either crown should work, you need the 7mm submariner crown (in ss). Then there is the case tube, 24-7030, or something like that. You can get away w/ just changing the crown, but it's a better deal when you change both. The rep parts aren't as good as the gen parts. So if you change out both the crown and the tube, you've got the whole assembly.

What Replicacenter Has To Say About Rwg.cc
alligoat replied to thomasng's topic in General Discussion
It didn't take me long to realize that replicacenter was a scam. And unfortunately, it still took me awhile to find TRC and RWG 1 after that. Life sure is easier since I found these places and the only down side is that I've spent a bunch of money, but I've got alot of watches and I've learned alot of good information. A year ago, I never would have dreamed that I'd be modding watches. -
On the 1680 from Bob Maron, the watch came out of the RSC in 2005 and of course they put on a new dial and hands, (probably tube and crown also). If you look at the bottom of the dial it says Swiss, not Swiss-T<25, for the tritium markers, which they no longer use. And I agree w/ the Oysterquartz being real, even if the dial sucks. Those sellers aren't gonna mess w/ anything that's not legit, but as ubi says the dial sucks and RSC would replace it in a heartbeat for mucho dinero, nothing less. But who would want an Oysterquartz anyway?

Do Any Of Your Friends Think You've Lost It?
alligoat replied to deltatahoe's topic in General Discussion
Four of my nephews are into watches these days because of my habit. And none of their mothers is upset. Of course, with young people these days, what's wrong with enjoying watches, compared to all of the other trouble they can get into! -
Joshua's Solid 18k Tt Datejust/what Do You Think?
alligoat replied to crystalcranium's topic in The Rolex Area
Wow! That looks beautiful to me. Rehaut is good so date mag should be OK. I did get one from Andrew w/ the Rolesor clasp and it quit working, so I'm partial to the old fashion clasp! Enjoy. -
I love the vintage Rolex and I think King's is a nice looking watch, but I did notice the closed 6 on the date.

Replacement Crown Tube - Subs And Sds
alligoat replied to TJGladeRaider's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
Bill, A screw extractor should work, it would be a small one. Like all the other tools to remove a rep tube, it's kinda like whatever works is fine. First, remove the gasket and go to work. It's amazing when you look at the rep tube- it's completely smooth and round on the inside- you gotta wonder how they even get it in there in the first place, it's no wonder if the watch's not waterproof. I'm not sure if rep crowns always fit a gen tube or a generic tube for that matter. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Gen crowns are around on ebay, they're just not cheap, maybe $25 plus shipping. -
Replacement Crown Tube - Subs And Sds
alligoat replied to TJGladeRaider's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
Yep ubi, just jam it in there and make your own grooves! And then pray that when you turn the tool, the rep tube will come out. There's always the rat tail file as back-up. LOL BTW, have you tried the generic tubes from borel or ofrei? -
Replacement Crown Tube - Subs And Sds
alligoat replied to TJGladeRaider's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
Hi Bill, Here's a tool that I got to take out tubes: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...%3AIID&rd=1 And here's a link from TRC http://www.replicacollector.com/members/in...showtopic=24060 Crown on a sub and sd is 7mm, and the tube is 6mm w/ 3.0mm x .35 hole. Rep tubes are a piece of junk, and of the four that I've taken out this week, not one of them had grooves on the inside. I managed to get them out by jamming the tool in there and turning. You can also use a small three sided file and jam it in there and turn. Threads on the rep tube and the gen tube might be the same, or slightly different- to play it safe, it's best to retap the hole w/ the correct tap. Check Ofrei.com and julesborel.com for tools and generic tubes. OEM crowns and tubes are available on ebay, but usually not cheap and you could end up w/ rep crowns and tube. Good Luck. -
Gmt Hand Slower Than The Hour Hand.. (eta 2836)
alligoat replied to sprockett's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
Could the GMT hand be slipping? At 4PM, the GMT would be at 1600 hours, if its losing 30 minutes by 10 PM, 2200 hours, that would be my first guess. Beyond that, it's a trip to the watchmaker, or sending it back to who you got it from. -
Except for the crown guards, Tribal's doesn't look too bad either. And after filing down four sets of crown guards this week, I'm going to have to go back and look at some gens for awhile cause my eyes are still crossed!
-
@ Ed, The watch either comes with good rehaut or it doesn't. It's in the construction of the case and the case either has it or it doesn't. So you have to research the dealers and figure out which cases/dealers have good rehaut for the 16610 Sub. Of course, it would help if Tribal would tell us which sub that is and where it comes from, but it could be gen! We all know that Rolex has the best rehaut.
