  1. Oddly, I like the Tiffany Dial version the best. Strange since normally, the co-branding is not my thing. :thumbsupsmileyanim:

The biggest tells for me on these is the font serif on the E in Explorer and on the numbers like the 3. Probably why the Tiffany version made pause and really look. I like the print quality and font.

  2. ... also applies to Sub's/SD's with gen construction.

I thought I would try an old trick I learned-- installing cam shaft drive gears on air-cooled bug engine cranks. It worked like a charm! I had this 'experimental' 1655 Homage, that I could not easily repress on the bezel.

This tutorial relies on the laws of thermal dynamics. Heat = Expansion, Cold = Contraction.

    What you will need:

    A freezer

    A Coffee or Tea Maker

    (optional) 30mm 12 point Socket

(optional) Plastic wrap, if you need to use above socket.

    Steps:

    1. All you need to do is place the bezel on the Coffee/Tea Maker's heating pad, and throw the watch in the freezer. WE ARE TALKING "MINUTES ONLY". NO MORE THAN 5 minutes. I had great results in 2 minutes.

    2. Remove watch head from freezer.

    3. With tweezers and heat resistant gloves (I used my Nitrile gloves and and additional layer of finger cots), move bezel carefully over to watch, line up, and install.

*be careful if too hot that you don't start to melt plastic crystals*

-- in many cases the expansion/contraction will NOT require additional pressing

    4. (optional) for stubborn bezels, grab your plastic wrap and 30mm 12pt socket and PRESS.

    Photos are worth 1000 words:

Enjoy, and be careful, HOT stuff.

  3. If you are up for it, can you pop the bezel and see if it is "really" gen like construction in terms of crystal, retaining ring, tension ring bezel.

@$98 if I were a betting man, it is a Silix/Alpha/MQJ style glued crystal with tension wire bezel. (I hope I am wrong!)

  4. Just curious guys. I live by the "View New Posts" / "Mark all posts as Read" options here on the forum. Even if I don't care about Tag's or AP's, it is nice to see the titles of what is being discussed.

What really prompted me to post this was Ubi and I's recent GTG thread that is almost 50 posts deep. Many of our local and regular users had no idea that thread existed. :g:

  5. Yes, agreed on the genuine, BUT that 9:00 Subdial, and non-beveled date window and light print on the datewheel look awful IMHO.

Funny thing is, I always used the 9:00/6:00 subdial connection as the quick tell. Now knowing Ebel produced non connected subdial dial's like this gives some 'cred' to the rep makers. Wonder if they were looking at the exceptions when they designed the reps.

  6. That is the biggest "tell" when someone tries to build a 1675/16750 using a different case. the Crown guards are proportional to the 5.3mm crown on the genuine case. When you use a case with a 6.0 or 7.0 mm crown, the space is too wide and looks strange when you fit a 5.3 mm crown. You can shave away excess material on the case or CG's, but you can't put new metal in where there isn't any. all the 1675's and 16750's use the small 5.3mm Crown. I don't believe Rolex went to a larger crown until the 116710 Ceramic GMT IIc

The "Fat Lady" had a 6mm crown. 16760.

  7. Scam... The watch in the first pic, is not the same. The crowns are totally different even from that tiny photo.

If they 1.) can not produce a photo of the watch on TODAY'S Newspaper from their locale and 2.) be willing to have a local person inspect it on your behalf *(I am sure there are forum members willing to help act as your proxy/middle man).

Also, what size were the photos they sent you? Any modern digital camera is going to have much larger resolution and exif data. If they sent you those sized photos they are web rips. Chances are they could not produce the full resolution photos.

  8. Cool. Honestly, you are making me feel much better. And this THREAD on RWG has been more informative the trying to page thru WUS these days.

Once again RWG IS the place for the best info. :good:

To the OP, it would be nice to have alternatives like you posted or the Raven or Tarnan... The Raven looks like it is using the same "Chinese w/Swiss made" dial that I got from Noah Fuller for my 6526 homage. Raven then Pad printed the dive rating and logo on it. :g:

  9. Well written P153. You actually put my mind at ease in some ways. As you said the lack of communications and poor MKII web presence is maddening. Between the WM9 SeaDweller and this, it really has tested my patience as well. I just hope when it is our turn, we really get to pick our look. I have fears of ending up with whatever Bill has left and rushes to close the project.

As far as his web presence. You have the main web site for browsing products. Then he has his blog with updates. Next, there is the official forum on WUS. Finally, he has some 3rd party "Support Desk" system for trouble tickets and inquiry's. Everything seems to have separate logins. I thought the "Support Desk" site would have status, or even a record of our order, but alas nothing. All I have is my credit card transaction and the print out of the order receipt. Sigh....

Has anyone begun reselling these yet? I dare say if the right combination (No Date, Silver Triangle) came up, I would consider buying 2nd hand...Finally, if it all goes south, I might just have to build a 6538 with the help of Phong et. al.

In the meantime, my 653.09 homage I built will have to do.

  10. I say GOOD. I really hope the market is flooded with these things, and that they continue to improve. I am blown away by the absurdity of what people are selling/buying so called gen vintage bracelets, that are junk.

This is one area where being a "Purist", especially from a franken perspective makes no sense to me. YMMV..... If I owned a GEN DRSD for example, that was worn daily, I sure as hell would not put an old, rattly, stretched out, ready to break 9315 or 7836 on it.

Bring on quality aftermarket clones/reps and their acceptance!!!! :thumbsupsmileyanim:Just price them accordingly. ;)
