  1. Sorry Olga....but you're wrong......the term synthetic sapphire occurs on many watch sites.....and I personally have seen it used many times over my 30+ years of collecting watches...gen and rep....! TTK - Point well taken. I hope you didn't take offense to what I said. I had puposefully put in my post the sentence about you, because I am aware that you have used "sapphire crystal" and currently use "genuine crystal" and always to mean the same thing, that the watch you were offering contained a sapphire crystal. As for the other dealers, well I have been pretty successful "perhaps lucky" in determining from their description what I would be getting. So far every watch that has arrived has been what I expected. But I know from previous posts that others have not been so lucky. The point I was trying to make is that this has become much more confusing than it needs to be. I wasn't trying to indict any dealer here specifically. As an example, the first link in your group at the bottom contained this description: Synthetic sapphire crystal glass On that site selling gen watches I wouldn't have even thought twice about the description, However; when dealing with reps, I would have been almost certain from that description that I was getting mineral glass. Again though I want to be very clear that this doesn't pertain to you. If I read that description in your offer, I would most assuredly expect to receive a watch with a sapphire crystal.
  2. Pug brings up a very good point here. Outside of our little world here the only times I have seen synthetic sapphire were in articles about the process of producing sapphire crystal. To the rest of the world sapphire watch crystal means sapphire period. One does not need to add synthetic or any other description in front. The term stands on its own. Problem is someone somewhere said synthetic sapphire to describe a mineral crystal and it stuck. Was it a deliberate attempt to mislead? I don't wish accuse anyone and it may have been a innocent mistake, but the point is it has now been brought up enough that the fog should be lifted and yet many members still don't know that synthetic, genuine or whatever sapphire is a sapphire crystal, and dealers still use synthetic to describe glass. Personally I don't care if you call it martian sapphire, but if the word sapphire appears anywhere in the description than it had better be sapphire and nothing else. A little aside TTK uses "genuine" sapphire to try and eliminate the confusion. While I don't think that it is neccessary, I do understand the reason and I applaud his attempt to remove any doubt about his descriptions. Point being, he shouldn't have had to do so.
  3. As TVT and Devedander said the swiss made label is governed by a swiss law which states that the assembly work must be carried out in switzerland as well as any testing that is done. The language states that 50% of the COMPONENTS must be manufactured in switzerland, but as Devedander said that is determined by the value of the components not the physical count or mass. One last note. In researching this subject I have been unable to confirm that ETA manufactures mechanical movements in Asia. They do make movements in China and Thailand for the Hong Kong market, but so far I have been unable to confirm anything but quartz movements for this market. This does not mean they don't, but that I have been unable to find a source to confirm that they do.
  4. I believe they are using um for microns. They offer 4 grades 40-65, 20-40, 10-15 and 5-10. Yes, the smaller the powder the less bright they glow. In this case it is about 1/3 the brightness from the coursest to finest powder. They claim the maximum amount of time that the powder is glowing to a point perceivable by the human eye is as follows: 40-65 6800 minutes 20-40 4700 minutes 10-15 3600 minutes 5-10 1800 minutes
  5. To the extent that things are discussed and offered on these boards, I agree with Pug. We have to remember that the sites that have been set up on the web are not just for us, so the dealers can do or say whatever they wish. It is up to their character to decide where the line between creative advertising and deceit lies. As for the boards, why don't we just agree to make it simpler for all. If you say sapphire then it had better be sapphire whether you chose to stick the words genuine or synthetic in front of it doesn't matter, sapphire is sapphire. If the movement is an ETA and the words copy or clone don't appear then it had better be something that came from an ETA factory, be it a swiss factory or asian one. The seagull st19 was mistakenly indentified as a lemania copy in the early days, we all know the truth now that it is a venus copy, so could we please drop the lemania label once and for all. We can be honest here, let the rest of the world figure it out on their own.
  6. I found someone else who sells a 5 - 10um powder. It is only a little more than double the cost of glow inc. powder, but pratically free when compared to tritec. So I'm going to give them a shot and see how it works out. I'll post the results and source after I've tried it.
  7. I'm using a Nikon D50, but check out this guy on timezone. His pictures are fantastic. He is using a 4mp Minolta/Konica Z2. BTW the Z1 is basically the same camera but in 3.2mp and can be for as little as $50 on ebay. http://forums.timezone.com/index.php?t=tre...47152&rid=0
  8. I've tried the mortar and pestal route, but unfortunately I was unable to get the stainless steel model and had to settle for marble. Well, when you grind the powder in the marble you end up creating some marble powder also and it makes the glow powder dirty looking.
  9. Jewelers rouge is a pinkish brown color. The different color compounds you see are for various purposes. White rouge is for stainless steel, following it with jewelers rouge will yield a slightly shiner surface. Blue rouge is used mostly for plastic, but is also used for plated item as it has almost no cutting ability and won't take off the plating if used properly.
  10. That's exactly right. The one time I used it was with amex and they called me to verify that it was merchandise. As long as MB is willing to work with online gambling sites, this is going to be a problem.
  11. The binder was matte clear lacquer. Unfortunately, Tom I also used an oiler. 2 of them actually. If you look close at the picture you'll notice that the hand is on an oiler. You could use a very small screwdriver as well, say a 50 or 60.
  12. It looks ok in the light with a uniform color and consistancy. It does not look good compared to a tritec lumed hand, but that is not my fault but rather the fault of the powder. The powder is a little to green in the light and the crystal size is way to big, to the point that it is noticeable with the naked eye.
  13. I bought some powder from Glow Inc. just to try and practice with before using Tritec's product. Anyway here is a first attempt at a hand with this powder.
  14. I'll take 2. I need something for an optical lab that has agreed to do an AR coating sample for me.
  15. I'm very interested and curious about this movement. I don't know if The Zigmeister would be interested, but I wonder if say 10 or 20 of us got together and chipped in $5 or $10 and bought The Zigmeister one of River's $99 LV's, if The Zigmeister would be interested in tearing it down and doing a review of this movement. Of course the watch would be his to keep.
  16. Just wait for one of the other versions. This flaw is going to be limited to this particular dial. It is because the circular lines engraved in the outer band continue into the silver ring of the subdial. The other dials do not have this outer band. As for mine, yes it does have the flaw, but it doesn't bother me that much. Although very apparent when magnified it is not that visable on the wrist. If King ever does get a correct dial, I will ask her for one to replace this one, but it has not diminished my enjoyment of this piece. Also, no one I have shown the watch to has noticed this flaw unless I pointed it out, of course these people aren't us.
  17. I'm still waiting for a good silver dial. The one king has is wrong. Tachymetre should be black not silver. Here are the gens of these two models: ;
  18. So far so good, knock on wood. Keeps good time chrono functions work and reset perfectly. I have a couple of gen quartz chronos so I don't see myself using the chronos very often. Actually, I don't use the quartz chronos often either. You should have yours sometime next week I would think. Your going to be very happy.
  19. I already have the No. 3. I've been waiting on this one for awhile, so I bought the first one available. No. 2 is the one I like the most and I may get that one also. The original is 16.1mm thick my rep measured 16.4mm.
  20. Just some very quick shots of King's Carrera.
  21. Or even the reference to that scene in the movie Nightshift.
  22. I don't know why, but I have a weird habit of taking off whatever watch I am wearing whenever I walk into my home. As much as I like watches, I never wear one in my home. So it is already off for those romantic moments. But if I am over her house or at a hotel, I do take it off for sleeping and other activities that occur in bed.
  23. Just ordered one from King. I'll post some photos when it arrives. For anyone interested Kings price is 255 EMS shipping included. She is having some problems with her internet connection and can't log on here at the moment, so she asked me to post the amount for her.
  24. I have been waiting on this one. Actually I tried on a gen yesterday, so the timing on this one is perfect. I received an e-mail from one of the other dealers that they will have this model soon. I don't want to say from who it was until they're ready to announce it themselves, but I'm guessing all the trusted dealers will have this model within a few weeks.
  25. I have a pair of friends that each want one of the 007 editions. One wants the older model and the other wants the new one that is referenced in this thread. While I'm not crazy about either, I can stand the older one. The new one is just way to busy and ugly for me. The three of us argued about these watches for about a half hour. In the end one friend still wanted the old one and the other the new. So beauty is definetly in the eye of the beholder. As for me I tried to talk them into getting a seamaster or po, but they were both no go.
