  1. He was a lot more peaceful after he got his morning cuppa java!
  2. Life in Alaska... these were taken yesterday. Here's a big boy. Is it a statue, or is it 2,000 lbs of attitude? Ahhhhhh, now I see where he's going. Q: What was the last thing to go through her mind? A: Her camera. PS: yes that IS a full-sized Chevy SUV. Big moose.
  3. I just tried a login "over there" and guess what? I'm no longer banned! Not an outcast! Not the Pariah from the North! I'm so happy with how this has all played out... so glad for you, ma brotha.
  4. Boy, Lin sounds like a great guy. I've got a friend like that in Seattle, he's a Rolex certified watchmaker and he's amazing. I went in with my 6536 the first time it ever needed anything done, and he oooo'ed and aaaaaah'ed over it, then he checked its serial number, and guessed "August 1958" for its age. Then we looked it up, and he was right. We opened the back, it was engraved 4th quarter 1958. Amazing. Men like that aren't just watchmakers, they are artisans. They're artists just the same as a DaVinci. What they do far surpasses the technical and becomes... art. Your bezel for example, it aligns at PRECISELY 12:00. Was that easy? No, I know how those things are built. He slaved over that. And in the end, he was so excited to see your response to his art! I put Ziggy in the same category. Any fool mechanic can tear a watch down and reassemble it and make it tick. It takes an artist to make it live. And that's what you have there, ma brotha. You've pulled that beauty back from the precipice and it lives on. Well done!
  5. Like I said, it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. I love your description of walking in to the watchmaker's place and his utter joy at the outcome. This Doxa just has a real magic about it! And doesn't it wear niiiiiice? Congratulations Ma Brotha. Now let's see that DS when it shows up! A little birdy told me you won it...

  8. Sweet JESUS!!! I'm just... It really... if I've EVER... it's got to be... GAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!! Words fail me, Lani ... that's seriously got to be the handsomest watch I've ever seen. It couldn't have gone to a nicer guy. I'm so happy for you! Woowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!
  9. Nice work! I experimented with my MBW and different kinds of bleach. They have different ingredients, not all use sodium hypochlorite. Then I used truly massive amounts of heat, and extremely saturated saline solutions. It went a little tropical ("chocolate") and the insert went faded, though a little "bluer" than I'd like.
  10. *clutching chest* *gasp* *gasp*

  13. When Lani jumps in the ocean, he does not get wet... the ocean gets Lani. Lani CAN believe it's not butter. The boogeyman checks his closet before going to bed, to make sure Lani isn't in there.

    YEAH!

    GET...THE...DIAL...RIGHT...THIS...TIME...
  15. Nanuq

    YEAH!

Ya see, Lani has been camped out in front of his watchmaker's place all night, since the Doxa Sub 300 was promised for TODAY. Somewhere on a quiet sidewalk in a quiet corner of Hawaii, there's a closed watchmaker shop, no lights in the windows, and outside..... he waits. Just about now he's smacking himself in the forehead, thinking "I could have brought my Blackberry and stayed ahead of Dems!"

  17. I understand completely. From what I've gathered over the years, most people on the gen sites aren't even someone I'd want to buy a beer. Their opinion of your grail is basically empty, in that it comes from an empty life. Regardless of what they say. I posted up a photo of one of mine over there and got one reply, about how the hands and insert are wrong. It was just... empty. But when I posted photos over here, your comment was the one that really stuck with me. Remember? It was about the Raiders of the Lost Ark movie, when the guys opened the chest and their faces melted off. I've never forgotten that.
  18. I gotta hand it to this guy, he took a GEN and personalized it into a "Black Pearl". From the VRF this morning...
  19. Toad, I think if you look closely at Shundi's avatar you'll see a demonstration of (cough) replicas. Okay, now you can stop looking. You'll go blind doing that.
  20. All good points lads, and here's another: on what gen forum do you read about members being willing to take a dremel and drill and make their watch better? On this forum we appreciate the watch for what it is... a solid, well finished tool that can take on different shapes and functions beneath a master's hand. We appreciate scars and gouges. On gen forums they don't love the watch, they love what it represents: manufacturer marketing and hype. So the piece must be pristine, treated with kid gloves, and locked away in a safe. So the hype (and by extension, their purchase decision) doesn't get tarnished.
  21. Hey, when you recognize the work of a true Master you need to get it into your collection. Ahhhhhh, you don't know the whole story there, do you? That little experiment started on the stove, but I quickly realized I didn't have enough BTUs to do a proper test. So I went to Plan "B" and melted that sapphire crystal in the process!
  22. Hey, speaking of "wrist injury" I have a stress fracture in my left wrist, and I've been hitting the gym with the ever-delectable Ms. Nanuq. When I put a strain on that wrist it just aches like crazy. I can't pronate or supinate the wrist more than about 10 degrees without it hurting, which I don't mind, but when it's under load it just ACHES. I still have a good grip on that side. There's no "noise" in there, no crackling or grunching or growling, but it hurts from my fingertips to my elbow. Ya think I'm okay here? I want it to rebuild stronger than it was before. I'm taking lots of calcium, magnesium, omega-3 and vitamin supplements. Advice???
  23. Ah, now I see how this will play out... the new owner "over there" will sport it for awhile till he realizes the movement is knackered, then back on the 'Bay she goes, with full disclosure this time, and you POUNCE! Second time 'round, the sale price will be a pittance, and lucky for us, you already have a couple gen ETA movements laying around just waiting to go in that case! Nice... very nice.
