  1. Hi ... does anyone have a proposed date for the GTG ? Cheers Rob
  2. you have great eyes Randy! i didn't even spot the 'swiss' on the dial! hmmm luminova...
  3. - i was waiting for an update thanks archi !!!! - i have got to say i am greatly anticipating these datewheels... i am sure they will be worth the wait !
  4. Hey Sharky, It looks like you have your work cut out for you and a nice pile of parts ( btw ... is your dial missing a marker at the 1?) I was just thinking about your destro idea ... which sound like a cool concept ... all you would need to do is rotate the dial 180 degrees... and you would have your lefty sub... anywho ... best of luck with it . rob
  5. yes thats the one
  6. I just got the Vintage Rolex Sports Models book in the mail today ... Sooo excited ... has lots and lots and lots of puuurrrrty pictures... Just leafing through it i am like a kid looking through -god knows- a toy catalouge fantasying of things i could never own ... its brilliant. anyone else have this ? those who do what do you guys think?... definitely a different read than the Rolex report.
  7. a vette was probably a bad comparison ... they're pretty reliable GM cars and rust isn't the biggest problem for them ( their bodies are fiber glass after all) ... for non- sports models fine don't go swimming with them ... but as far as sports models go... they should be doing what they say on the box ... its kind of like getting a land rover and not getting it dirty. My rep 5517 has gone up to 15 feet under and works fine . Hell My gen MOP datejust worth over $7k has taken 10 feet plunges in the pacific .. Rollies were built to be abused they are the work-horses of the horological community and are built to be robust (with the exception of the very confusing Cellini range) . That said , with reps you should make sure that they have the gaskets in the right places and have been tested b4 you go splashing about with them... but once WR has been confirmed i think you should get them as wet as possible.... after all -thats what subs were built for .
  8. did you have to mod the case to fit in the 1570 or was the 1665 case big enough to accept it . I want to drop one in my 1680 but from what i have read here the mbw cases (out of the box) won't take them . Great looking watch by the way !!! these SD's are really taking my fancy this one has just sold it for me ... wouldn't mind a comex 1665 myself
  9. Hmmmm i used to be really into rc cars but not so much any more. I am quite devoted to music and theatre especially opera and ballet - ( no i am not gay - but thanks for asking) ... i am also into architecture and art . currently am studing for a BA in Theology and Philosophy (for the hell of it)... Previously i used to work in fashon PR- so i used to follow fashion recreationally until my job robbed me of the pleasure. I also enjoy talking pretentiously about global politics - like i know anything about world politics :-) . OH yeah im really into antiques esp phones and typewritters - anything odd and quirky ... oh and cheese- i am a certified fromagephile. did i mention i smoke aswell so im keen on tobacco of all types .
  10. Rolex Date Just about 3 years ago. With a 'rose' MOP dial . Exactly like this one pictured
  11. < nuff said ... if i could tac on a bit of my own: ... I know i am a bit of a noob in these forums but i have to say the majority of the people that participate here and offer 'modding' services are regular people like u and i (enthusiasts) we are very fortunate to have them here and that they offer these services at all. We really shouldn't be demanding of them especially when they have made it clear that they have too much on their plate on the moment or if they just want to take a break (i understand that folks like The Zigmeister and Fine pics have stated that they will honour projects previously agreed upon- true gentlemen) . I know it can be peavish not to get a replies to pms but sometimes you have to be patient and other times you need to respect that fact that they are not obliged to respond to us like costumer service reps. - from my POV/ Then next pm i get about 'where to find MBW's' from someone i am not familiar with is probablly going to drive me up the wall ... I might own one- but i don't even know how to get a brand new mbw!
  12. IM IN! Argentine steaks... hmmmm ... Rob
  13. You don't really see the watch except for a couple of seconds but in that time you could see the dial pretty clear... and if my memory serves me ... it did not have chronograph registers - it in fact had calendar registers ala cheap Canal street rep ... Shocking
  14. I was watching kill bill 2 with my girlfriend last night. In the scene where Uma Thurman is taking the home pregnancy test she times it with a pretty apalling Daytona with calander registers :yucky: . You would think they would have the pull to atleast borrow a gen or find a better rep - hmmm... makes me wonder about the watch used in Pulp Fiction for Walkins war story.
  15. I thought i would moan for a little bit. Last night i packed up my 1680 to get shipped out to Palp for some modifications . And i have got to say ( although i know im going to be getting it back-- in better condition then i sent it out) I felt like somthing was missing. I automaticly put on my 5517 seeing if it would fill the vintage void in the pit of my stomach ... but it just wasn't the same-.... So i thew on my G183 Black Seal ... ( both watches haven't seen any wrist-time since i got my 1680--- and they are my daily beaters - i alternate them ofcourse). I know that my watch will be in safe and capable hands... - I just have to keep on telling my self .- 'Get over it ... she'll be back soon. Its only a watch!' . Anyway -end of windge- i needed to purge that out of my system. Thanks for listening , Rob
  16. As thewhightstuff had mentioned on a previously the hands on a stainless steel 1680 tended to be white gold and therefore wouldn't strip to brass. that watch that you had posted as a refference looks like a guilt dial 5512 which would have used yellow gold hands to correspond with the ( what would have been) the gold guilt markations on the dial. There was no use of chrome on gen rolex hands at all. Nevertheless its a nice looking watch best of luck to you with your modding . R
  17. Ubi, You've got to get me in on the potential new batch as well ! Seriously !!! Rob
  18. ubi, you got to count me in for atleast 2 !!!! these date wheels look amazing ! rob
  19. Anyhow... If your future involves modding more MBWs (or any other watches for that matter), you should seriously consider getting a press. It's a nice item to have...
  20. Thanks for your sage advice ubi. its always apricated Yeah i am obviously too stubourn to buy a press... Maybe i will i dunno- oh i'll never learn !. i am thinking of going the maglite route and seeing where that takes me . I have managed to ding up the edge of case back pretty badly as well ... as i said i think i need to step back from this watch for a while and calm down b4 i do any more damage .
  21. Ok ... i want to say that i f-ed up and i need to share it with the world! the other day i got my sparkling nos tropic 127 in the post and couldn't wait to get home to drop it in my MBW 1680 ... so i take out my trusty window scraper and pop off the retaining ring and lo and behold the crystal comes of with it - result- i grease up the 127 and pop into place and coax the retaining ring as far down as it is going to go.... frustrated i remember the first rule to this game - patcience- after a moment of contemplation i forget about the prime rule and break out the pliers and a rag to pad protect the case and the retaining ring from the un-holy task i am about to perform on my beloved newly aquired watch. so i gently clamp an edge of the case with the pliers and begin to squeeze tightly and - POP!- - I think sucess... i withdraw the pliars .the result is - Oh F*ck! Sh*t! B*ll**ks! the tip of my pliers were not on the retaining ring at all... it was actully on the edge of the crystal ! I took out a substantial chunk of the tropic. thank god it is solid acrylic ... i would have killed myself if i had properly rendered the crystal useless. Nevertheles i hang my head in dissapointment for damaging a perfectly good rolex tropic . I proceeded with a little more caution and tried to press the retaining ring down more with the pliers and rag combo ... so its down... but not flush against the case and im frustrated again... so its in the watch box until my bezel insert comes which should give more then enough time to calm down re- assess the situation over which i am losing sleep - and if you can't tell ... i am loving every minute of working on this watch! really i am.
  22. what a shame i would have loved to have come.... the next time there is a gtg get me on the list... Hell we should organize another gtg!
  23. Chieftang, that sucks- thats made me a bit wary now - oh well - we'll see what happens. i dropped him an e-mail yesterday ... i understand that it normally takes a couple days b4 he gets back to ppl... so fingers crossed ... i am on a bit of a quest and hopefully he will give a soloution .
  24. I remember 7 years back Rollie bubblebacks were all the rage... you could easily pick up reps of them ... Where have they gone? Does anybody know where i could find one. - if they don't make them anymore they should... i think they're amazing.
  25. I just wanted to give a quick welcome from another Londoner ( well london based New Yorker) ... we should do a london gtg...
