  1. i'm not a cartier expert, but i don't believe the santos 100 (a fairly recently released watch -- i think in 2000?) has ever had a patterned dial....

I have a feeling you are right. My ETA 100 is stunning, but with a patterned dial it is probably a fantasy model.

  2. In the post about the San Francisco mayor's watch, Gunner Gran posted a piece about the history of the Sant 100 with a picture of a two-tone model. I'm curious to know if any of the models came with the trademark patterned dial--the one pictured looks flat white, just as the chrono is a flat whitish silver, sans patterns.

Was there ever a Sant*s 100 model produced with a patterned dial?

    Just wondering...

  3. For the record I am a gay member of this forum and gay issues are not a theoretical or semantic nicety.

In the U.S. there are blatantly discriminatory laws that have a direct impact in my life. The government does not recognize my partner and myself, we are like two strangers living under one roof. Please try to imagine what sort of complications this causes.

I just got back from watching the gay pride parade here in Chicago. Once a year gays take over the street and march to show that we exist in every imaginable walk of life - doctors, lawyers, union trades, government, corporate. We are your neighbors and co-workers. Like it or not, we are a part of and contribute to society.

People who make deragotory remarks about gay people and their sympathizers, well, I'm not going to say but you know what I'm thinking.

As for Newsom's watch, looks like a Seiko almost. He should go back to Pams.

I agree with most of your comments, but believe (and may be mistaken) there are a few states in the US that recognize either gay marriage or civil unions. Having a close friend who is gay, I can really appreciate the challenges gays face in society from every angle. BTW, I certainly hope that my earlier comments were not misinterpreted by any of the gay members of this forum.

  4. I hope you're wrong about me. Sorry if you were offended.

My best friend came out of the closet and I have many other friends who are gay, including one who lives in your neck of the woods (Bay Area). I relate to people on an individual level. However, I don't believe that most people in the world are gay, or that being gay is anything but an alternative lifestyle, as it goes against what I perceive to be the teleological perpetuation of our species. I do, however, accept that it's a lifestyle that people either choose, or that it's a product of nurture, or that they are biologically predisposed to it (nature). I would hope that I'm entitled to my own opinion, just as you are to yours.

Being in San Francisco, I suspect that you are surrounded by an environment that fully embraces gay culture and represents it as a "normal" alternative lifestyle, so you are more aware of it than perhaps others around the world. Where I live, we don't have anything called "Pride," of which I'm aware. Defining gay culture as "normal" would be tantamount to what Patrick Moynihan would refer to as "defining deviancy down." I may be wrong but I don't think it's normal at all, but unusual. So as regards your sensitivity, let one thing be clear: I have no moral problem with homosexuality and couldn't care less if someone is gay or not. Not everyone lives in a place where this lifestyle is a major sociological issue.

of perhaps you are a closed minded bigot?

hmmmmmmmmm, "fringe group"? do you live in a cave with the other homophobes and football hooligans?

or you don't read newspapers or watch television?

lets look at some attendance figures for some pride parades this year:

    Rio, Sao Paulo: 2,500,000

    Chicago: 400,000

    Rome: 100,000

    Toronto: 400.000

    San Francisco: 60,000

    Berlin: 500,000

    London: 250,000

    Sydney: 65,000

here is a list of some of the almost 200 cities where events will be held this year:

yup, you really have to be a "sympathizer" or deep into gay and lesbian culture to know this is all happening. they do such a good job of keeping it a secret :bangin:

  5. i posted that pic because i was curious about the watch and did not get close enough to see it.

i really expected a more cosmopolitan and adult reaction on this forum.

i suppose i am a sympathizer. my sister is gay. i have a large number of friends who are gay and lesbian. they cover the whole spectrum from successful writers and musicians to two marine biologists to attorneys to co-workers and employees at local cafes and restaurants.

what i don't have are friends who are narrow minded uneducated homophobic bigots...

All politics aside, I think that it was just a bit obscure mentioning a local "celebrity" politician and fringe group (using abbreviations) in an international forum. How many of those in UK or elsewhere have ever heard of "Pride"? Perhaps because this pride event is close to you in proximity and emotionally (your sister), maybe it's a foregone conclusion that everyone understands what you're talking about.

Back to the regularly scheduled program: don't know what kind of watch he's wearing, but I think he should put his PAMs back on!

  6. My friend I haven't let you down before and I wont do so now.....The Santos is a must for your formal evenings but for day wear go for the Orange PO and the Cousteau.

    Cheers

    Ken

Ken, I almost agree with you wholeheartedly. Santos (dress), Orange PO (sport) and 111H (for showing your tremendous sense of good taste). :-)

By the way, I just picked up a River 2-watch holder. GREAT deal for only $25 shipped. I just tested it with the Santos Chrono and the 177. No problemo. The Santos was a tight fit only because the band is so stiff, but it goes in with some "gentle" pushing. Get the holder and you have 1 on your wrist, two in your travel case which is LOCKED in your suitcase. Do they have safes in the cabins? Enjoy your cruise!

PS: don't know how seaworthy the PO is. I might be more inclined to trust the Fish or Sub since that helium valve is a bit dodgy. Love Subs but they're too popular. Hence: Fish after the PO.

  7. Laugh all you want, but this is the best bang for the buck: hxxp://www.amazon.com/Double-Automatic-Winder-Rotates-Hours/dp/B000FGEE7E

Very quiet and reliable. The auto timer keeps the servo motor from overheating, and probably adds to longevity. Can only say good things about them. Not pretty but very pragmatic.

EDIT: you can buy 2 double winders and still stay under 100 US

  8. Two snap shots!

If I'm not mistaken, that's the 21 jewel, not the ETA version, correct? To my eye, the ETA face is generally more accurate with the exception being the placement of the T Swiss T or "Swiss Made" (cannot recall which for this model), which seems to be accurate on the 21 jewel oddly enough...
