I think that attempt might have been a little too heavy, but you can probably strip the varnish off and retry I think I remember that someone tried a similar effect with a marker pen

If I recall, a while back Dems said that a clear crystal was one of the things which he considered a potential tell for a rep (I believe referring to vintage Daytonas...) As with everything, I think it's a matter of finding the right balance of techniques to create the desired effect

That's a fantastic read If you really want a particular gen, and it would be a truly satisfying purchase, then I would say yes, sell all your reps to get the funds But. I would ask this question first... Would that rep (in flawless condition out of the box which would require no modification) be as emotionally satisfying, as the reps which you sought the parts for? Sure, a gen (or rep) as a gift will always have the sentimental value of being a gift from that person, but a self-purchased gen would only ever be that. I would just say consider if looking at the gen might make you miss the modded reps you sold to buy it, more than you appreciate the gen itself...

Not a model often discussed, but it does have a unique charm I know Clint Eastwood wore one in Firefox (novel was wayyyy better than the movie, as is usually the case...) The thing which I've always noted about the rootbeer variant, is the size of the lume, in comparison to the size of the markers, that's always struck me as unusual, but of course, it just adds to the character of the watch

To be fair, the mid-case, crystal, crown and tube are still original to when it was purchased

No surprise here, but it's my 6200 project watch... I bought it a couple of years ago from Silix, and, having sold off everything else in my collection, by default, it's the oldest piece... The original movement never gave me any grief till I clumsily damaged it, and if course, most of the major components have been replaced or modified, but, it holds the place of my oldest surviving rep

Indeed, nothing as disappointing as people without the common courtessy to just say 'thank you' for things like that, it just shows a real lack of regard and bad manners, sadly, it's an all too common scenario now

Although I'm normally satisfied by factory lume and movements, I would agree with Dani, that an improvement in those things could only be an improvement on what there is now

I don't think it really takes away from the OP, after all, if someone actually needs a rep to be perceived as a gen, then that is part of their expectation of the watch Those're interesting examples, and of course, in the circles you're talking about, if everyone has the funds for a gen collection, when the cost isn't so much a consideration, I can see how a rep might be looked down on, but I think it depends on the circles themselves. As mentioned, I know people who could easily afford gens, but wear reps, and also know people who wear gens, but are totally oblivious to the watch in terms of brand/horological value, they just got it as it was a nice watch. I guess what I was meaning, is kind of along this examples: If I was to attend a barbecue in 'higher circles', wearing khakis and a shirt, if I was to wear my 6200 project, which actually looks like it is 50 years old, I would not expect it to be noticed or commented upon, but, if I was to wear the exact same clothes, but with a brand spanking new Ceramic Sub/DSSD etc, I would not be surprised if that would attract more attention, and possibly be commented upon. [Edit to add] I think it's one thing to have a gen or a passable rep as a necessary 'work watch', and quite another for someone to want 'the Best Sub' just to impress skanks in a bar
