Looking For A 1680 Genuine Insert...
HauteHippie replied to TwoTone's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
They're out there, but rather hard to find... The last one I saw on Ebay sold for almost $170. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...A%3AIT&rd=1 -

Review of Rolex 16610 Submariner "Noobmariner"
HauteHippie replied to By-Tor's topic in By-Tor's Watch Reviews
Yes... It's the point I've been trying to make for several posts now. I think it is sinking in. -
Right there with you Snowdog. The Ingenieur did it for me and I've already purchased and sent one to The Zigmeister. And let me tell you, the pics just don't do it justice. Once in your hand and on your wrist, it will really wow you. Solid as a rock and sleek to boot.
-
Great story and insight, TTK. Great watch, too. Now don't you dare go posting a Railmaster wrist shot or my checkbook will surely cry "Uncle" ! ! !
-
Yep, already have a TTK/TWG noobmariner... 2 actually. Bought a broken one for the dial and datewheel. Now if I can just find someone to sell me an old TW Best or MBW with lug holes I'll be set... If not, you're right, MBW 1A might be the only way to go. And I might not want to wait too long before it is gone too. hehehe
-
But I'll still be missing the lugholes. By the way, what's the difference in movements between the 1A and 1B anyhow?
-
Really slick, but where do you go from a Railmaster? To strapping a grandfather clock on your wrist? I always figured that a 44mm PAM was my limit - and with all common decency taken into consideration - it is. But this watch is starting to call my name... One more post by you with pics of this thing will probably push me over the edge.

Necropostphilia should be a crime. -
Strangely enough, it looks just like it did with the other movement!!! ;) That's the watch I seek. And yours looks great, Tribal. Congrats. The pre-F style of a couple years ago was great. Such a shame I had zero interest in them at the time. *sigh*

belial2k - Hilarious analogy although not quite so appropos. Replica watches are a hobby, and different people have varying degrees of interest in their hobbies. Now when you're talking about hobbies that involve building things, the conscientious person tends to take alot of pride in their work and therefore pays close attention to details. For example, I build furniture as a hobby. I have a garage full of woodworking machinery. And through clubs and forums I've come to know many others in the hobby. We all do the same thing when presenting a newly finished piece to other hobbyists - We direct them to overlook all of our mistakes. Yet invariably everyone else just sees a great piece of furniture that was the product of many hours of hard work. There is no perfect piece of handmade furniture and there is no perfect replica of a submariner. Many replica watch enthusiasts merely enjoy wearing pieces they obtain without much thought. But as a hobby, some of us enjoy building a "better" watch. So maybe, just maybe, it is those people who have a better eye for detail. It would seem to make sense. But certainly those people take pride in what they build. So to be fair, let's not put words in people's mouths. Nobody has said 0.1mm can been seen from a distance. It has been said that the CN sub rehaut is noticeable from a distance, and the 0.1mm figure was previously pulled out of thin air. Secondly, nobody said it is harder to detect rehaut in magnified images. It has been said that when comparing two different pictures taken at different angles, under different conditions, at different magnifications the comparison can be deceiving. And objectively speaking that is true. And now back to our regularly scheduled program.... -
Oh.... I got mine to slide partially out doing that, but then I had to tap with a hammer to get the rest of the way out. And in doing so the little tool bent. So it is now in the trash.
-
Those tools are junk. Mine actually bent so I threw them away. You need to use something that is hardened steel as these pins are set in there pretty well.

Review of Rolex 16610 Submariner "Noobmariner"
HauteHippie replied to By-Tor's topic in By-Tor's Watch Reviews
It is interesting how a fraction of a mm in sub rehaut is "minor" and yet on a Panerai crown it's the end of the world for most people. You've got hundreds of people lining up to buy Palp crowns, Lello crowns, Davidsen crowns, Homer crowns, etc. I think the real issue is that the deep sub rehaut is just far more elusive than the thick Panerai crowns, and so people are more willing to just write it off. Either way, the fraction of a mm on the Sub (as on the Panerais) is something I easily notice from a distance, which makes it one of those thorns in my side. But in any event, it's about the hobby and enjoyment of creating a franken watch, and inspecting the details in the process is part of the fun. -

I guess I don't know what to say, because I've done the same exact thing and it was just smack me in the face different. You could, with a gen or two at your disposal, place them side by side and shoot some rehaut pics of them together on an equal plane. That'd really show off the rehaut difference. I think this pic of Bytor's shows it best, although it is still an inadequate comparison. Here we see the rehaut of the CN sub at a more "advantageous" angle because it isn't nearly as horizontal as the gen. Yet clearly you can see the rehaut difference anyhow. Put the two at the same angle and it'd be no contest. I guess for people who can't see it, good for you!!! I wish I couldn't!!! Then I'd be happy with an easier to source watch! -

Hey I like them, too. I own a gen. But I don't wear it often because I don't care for the attention it gets - it just makes me feel silly. And I think it is just a fact that most people who own a Rolex don't even know what Patek is for example, and only own a Rolex because it is a Rolex. It's the name. You and I are not most people. That's all. -

I'm thinking more along the lines of a C class Mercedes. Mercedes has really sold out recently with these C class offerings. C stands for "Cheap" and it's there for all the people (and there are LOTs of them) who want to drive around with a Mercedes emblem on the back of their car. It's nothing special in terms of performance or handling (like a Honda), but it does say Mercedes on it, and it's not SO far out of reach yet costs at least twice that of a comparable Honda. Around me the C class is plentiful, the E class is spotty, and the S class is rare on the roads. Oh, and yes, Mercedes does make some amazing cars, but they don't offer a legit comparison as you say. -

It sounds to me like you DO understand people who buy Rolexes.... They (most of them anyhow) do it for one and only one reason: because it says Rolex on it. The whole world knows the name Rolex as well as they know the name Mercedes. So owning one says "I have money" to the world. It's the same reason Rolex reps are so popular. And quite frankly I feel rather silly wearing a Rolex. I own a gen Sea Dweller that I use for its intended purpose (diving under water), but rarely wear it around elsewhere. I don't wear a Rolex replica either, although Ubi's bad influence has me collecting parts for a franken watch. Somehow this has renewed my interest in Rolex, mainly for the fun factor I suppose. Afterall, with PAMs you certainly can't find genuine parts so readily to build frankenwatches. Anyhow, so far I've collected a few genuine 16610 bezel inserts, a gen crown and tube, gen tudor sub hands, one TWG CN sub (which I've never worn), one broken TTK CN sub (which I've never worn). The franken will pretty much follow the 16610 Ubi recipe when all is said and done, but the right case still eludes me. I'd prefer a pre-F serial with lugholes but the right one is hard to come by. It's all about the rehaut my friend!! And even after I go through the expense of building this franken, how often will I wear it? I honestly do not know. -
Ubi my mom told me to stay away from you because you are a bad influence on me and my checking account balance!!!!
