  1. UPDATE: I bought the Cowon D2 from Amazon.com. I got the 16gb model for about $160 and that includes the shipping. I've been using it for 3 days now, and I am impressed. Its has 16gb on board and is expandable with an SD card, plays my mp3 files great, stores pictures, has a note pad, FM radio, regular and scientific calculator, a cool looking interface, touch screen, and Hackr is right, this thing cranks!! It also plays video files, but I have not really fooled around with that yet. Its not the slickest looking player, but so far I love it. Maybe getting this will be the necessary boot in the butt I need to finish digitizing all my old tapes to mp3 so I can listen to them again. Cheers
  2. It never ceases to amaze me the amount of pure technical and artistic ability we see come through these boards everyday by many of its members. That is an amazing looking piece, in an amazing looking case, by an amazing artisan. Congratulations, and wear it well!! Cheers
  3. Watch Eden has these in quartz, and one is a quartz chrono in black/orange with steel bracelet. They also have the all pvd black Galapogos Island version in quartz chrono. They have their flaws for sure, but they look great and at under $130, they are a cheap way to get one on your wrist to see if it is right for you. Personally, I think these are fantastic, and hopefully one will be in my future later on this year. Cheers

  5. Thanks for all the food for thought input folks, its much appreciated. Cheers
  6. Hi all I'm considering the purchase of an mp3 player and it came to mind that I'd ask here since we have a diverse community with folks from all over the world with many different opinoins. First off, I originally was holding out for a iPod touch and its way cool user interface, but I still cannot justify the $300+/- price tag for a 16gb unit, so Apple is out. The Microsoft Zune would be another alternative, and its customer support seems good, but it currently lacks a touch screen interface, something I figure would be cool to have in an mp3 player. So in searching on-line, I eventually came to the Cowon D2 series, an mp3 player that has a solid following in the audiophile community for its sound quality (something I can appreciate), has a touch screen interface, is about the size of a credit card, is expandable with an Sd card slot, reportedly has about 40 hours of playback of audio files on a single battery charge and boasts of many great customer reviews on Amazon.com, Newegg.com and cnet.com. Based on this, and its $150+/- price tag, I am thinking of pulling the trigger on one, but I wonder, what do other members here use for a media player? Apple, Zune, Sony, iRiver, Cowon??? Has anyone have high praise or a horror story of any one brand? Like I said, I am probably going with the Cowon, but I wonder what other people here are using. Thanks
  7. Nice, classy looking watch, congrats!! I think I like the picture of it on a bed of corks the best. Cheers
  8. I want one of those gnomes for in front of my door, would go great with a "Go Away" door mat . Seriously, MBW was/is a rep supplier from Thailand who used to/still does produce vintage Rolex sport watches which accepted the fitting of genuine parts (a few years ago, this was a bigger deal than today). In addition, they had access to cases and parts for APROOs', Rolex Daytona and others which also accepted genuine parts, as well as being able to supply complete watches. Based in the MBK center in Bangkok (which is why I refer to them as MBW/MBK), thier wares could also be obtained through many other suppliers over the years; TTK, Luckyy and Watchmaster years ago, to Eurotimez, Pamfried, Narrika and George (not Watchmaker9's George, he does his own fabulous stuff) currently. This is the best of my knowledge, to those more in the know, please feel free to correct me. Part of the legend of MBW is that they used to be hard to source, being that only Maria (MBW=Marias Best Watch) was the only source, and apparently somewhat difficult to deal with (one wrong word, and no soup for you!!). To this day, the original MBW submariners, especially when modded, fetch a rather handsome re-sale price since they are coveted as being from the golden age of special, hard to get, replicas. Hope this helps Cheers
  9. Thank you all for your kind words, I needed the boost, lately I have had more problems getting things to work on projects with hands that don't fit, to cheap ass Chinese parts breaking, hearing encouragement from you folks really means the world to me. The Panerai project hopes to be a good one provided I can get the right hands, a good dial and crown guard screws (the ones that came with that case are no where near the right size, and the holes in the case have thier screw threads a little stripped ). Cheers
  10. Hi all Had the opportunity to put together a fun little project using some parts I had sitting around. I had an ETA 2836 hanging around and thought of doing a Tudor Sub project with it. But when searching for a dial on Ebay, I came across and managed to secure a rather cool looking gen Submariner tritium dial a la 16800, so my plans changed into building a project with this dial instead. I am all about having the most fun while spending as little as I can, so I figured it would be cool to build a 16800 with this genuine dial, ETA movement and standard issue rep parts. A little while after getting the dial, a used Sub rep came up for sale on another board for $75, and its case had lug holes, bingo! A folded end link oyster bracelet I had (rep part) was brought out of storage, a set of Tudor mercedes hands from Borel was purchased and I had all the parts for the build. The parts list; 1. ETA 2836 2. Genuine Submariner tritium dial 3. Mercedes hands for Tudor Submariner 4. MBW/MBK date wheel overlay 5. Movement enlargement ring (nylon) 6. Rep oyster bracelet 7. Complete case from used rep Submariner In test fitting all these parts together, I was expecting to have to do some modding to get everything to fit, guess what, I got lucky. The enlargement ring, which was made to fit the movement anyway, was also a perfect fit to the case. The end links from the bracelet fit between the case lugs perfectly, the dial (which I was most concerned about) fit the case great with the minute markers just up against the rehaut. I do not know of the original source of this rep case, but it does have lug holes (which do have an anomily, I'll explain later), a nicely constructed bezel, a bezel insert that does sit just below the top of the bezel, a crystal that does not have any etched coronet at 6:00 (perfect) and rises just a bit over the top of the bezel, and has some wear marks of a used watch that goes nicely with the faded gen dial. The MBW/MBK date wheel is a perfect match since it is white, has round top 3's and open 6's and 9's The markers on the dial have yellowed with age, so I aged the hands by soaking them in coffee for a few days. This gave them just enough tint to match the dial nicely (sorry for the blurry pic). Remember me mentioning the lug holes, well they are drilled at an angle! The inside of the lug has the hole lower than on the outside of the lug , well because of this, I decided not to drill for larger spring bars to avoid making the holes too big and destroying the case. I also opted not to install a gen crown and tube, why, well gen crowns and tubes cost money and this is supposed to be a budget project and there was nothing wrong with the rep crown and tube, don't fix what is not broken. The enlargement ring, Borel part number A/8330, was a perfect fit for this case, case clamps were used to secure movement into case. Its all together now and working fine, of course there is always one bugger in every project, and for this one, it was the date wheel. I thought I had this sucker perfectly aligned throughout the month, but I did not, and did not notice it until it was all cased up, but I think I will keep it this way since I have seen many well used gens with their date wheel slightly shifted. The following pics are the finished project. I did a little work to the inside of the crown guards, not much, just enough to make them a little slimer. The case back screws on nicely, nicer than many reps do and has the "gelena shitinerand" stamping on the inside. Notice how the flip lock on the clasp does not have the two engraved "lines" in it aligning with the links, and has a rather well done coronet stamping, well that is a rep bracelet and it came that way, no modifications. The rep pearl looked like a zit, so I removed it and did not replace it with another one, giving it a more used look. I have seen up close a few 16800 Subs, and this project does resemble what I remember, slightly slimmer case, hands and hour markers faded to a tan like color, white date wheel and that characteristic bright ring aroung the edge of the bezel when held at an angle against the light. I love the look of the faded dial, it is matte with a nice cocoa color to it, I think I will call her "Swiss Miss" Thats it, its not a totally "proper" Sub made with 1:1 style case construction, gen crown and tube, gen bezel and bracelet parts, but the movement, dial and hands can always be switched to a better case in the future. For now, I get my 16800 on my wrist for less than $350 or so. So whats next, a Panerai project featuring this; and one of these; Stay tuned.......... Thanks for looking Cheers
  11. Thatr is a shame, other tan that spelling mistrake, its a really noice looking wratch. Cherrs
  12. Its amazing how the smooth sweep makes the watch look like its running faster than it is. I have had a few Bulova accutrons over the years, they were great fun. FYI - the Rolex Oyster Quartz models did not sweep like a tuning fork movement, but rather they did do the one second at a time tick tick that is associated with all other quartz watches. I think the Rolex quartz never caught on because of the idea that anyone could identify a rep by how it "ticks" like a quartz. That and the fact that spring driven mechanical watches always have a soul and personality all thier own and are the first choice in high end watch making. The Rolex quartz was of couse the most accurate movement of its time and supposedly had a louder tick than other quartz watches. Does that movement have a date function? If it does you could build a DateJust style watch with the all black mystery dial (no hour markers at all) with that movement, that would be way cool. Have fun
  13. Can I join in on this party Although, my pictures are not as nice as those above Cheers
  14. This means that the Seiko movements do not have a winding position on the crown like many swiss automatics do, the Seiko is designed that way, you just give it a few shakes and put it on. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Seiko, in fact they are the REAL value in sport watches today. With many models under $1000US, they are well built, sturdy, have some of the best lume in the business and are very much collectible. Cheers Edit: If you are thinking of getting a Seiko, make sure it is from a reputable seller since there are apparently rep Seikos' out there in the world.
  15. Ken trading was also responsible for bringing the "Plasmir Milgraph" chronograph to market. A uber-cool looking watch which came in two register seagull ST-10 hand wound and three register 7750 versions that also bear a resemblence to Panerai watches. These also show up on TZ and Ebay and are quite collectible. Cheers
  16. Sixx My wishes for a speedy recovery are with you, hope to see you back here soon!! Take care
  17. I have about 45 watches (rough count), 11 of those are gens (various makes) and that includes the cornerstone of the collection pictured in my signature. As others have said, Tanfo's collection is the last word, and I beleive there is a good percentage of his collection that is gen. I remember seeing pictures on TZ of a members Seiko collection, which I beleive was something in the order of 1,500 watches. So, if your wife thinks you have an illness for watches, agree with her and show her some of the collections here, that will proove you are not that far gone......yet...... Cheers
  18. Oh snap, I did not even catch the name of the poster on that thread, . Also sorry to hear that the problem still exists, your idea of tightening the bridge screws worked fine for me (so far), so I should be thanking you . I am not really worried about mine since I got it for $80 and use it for a beater a lot of times. I hope you can find the cause of this on yours inexpensively. All the best...
  19. Thats one of the reasons I like it better, it does not have all that useless text all over it.
  20. Make sure that all of the bridge screws are tight. Just the other day, my Pam005 had the same problem, did some research and found this thread; http://www.rwg.cc/members/Winding-problem-...hl=6497+winding See picture in second post, tighten the screw shown. It worked for my Pam005, in fact a few bridge screws were loose, I snugged them all up and all is good. I'd try this first as it is a quick fix that doesnt cost anything but a few minutes, good luck Cheers
  21. Ok, now this is the DEEP SEA for me, and I don't even care if its a fantasy or not. The all black looks sinister and it solves the problem of the reps steel not being as bright looking as the gen. http://www.jpc8118.com/000000000000rlsdph1...813-p-6107.html And the price tag for the asian version is not bad at all. I may eventually break down and get one of these after all.
  22. You know, its getting pretty scary looking at these pics, then looking down at the Pam 005 that is on my wrist today and thinking that it looks tiny .
  23. What was the case material on the gen originally? I seem to remember seeing somewhere, or being told that it was aluminum, correct me if I am wrong. If the DSN rep case is of aluminum or titanium, thats one thing, but if the rep is solid stainless steel, then it would be like wearing a boat anchor to your wrist. I think DSN was going for the vintage when repping this as the vintage does not have the red numbers on the bezel, has no "swiss made" on the dial and has the dial printing a little thicker. Of course, with only a few of these gens in the world, I'll bet that this rep was made without the benefit of the real deal as a sample. Although, can you imagine tearing apart a real one of these to rep it ?? Anyway, great effort by DSN, well done!! Cheers PS - now that we have this one, how 'bout repping the Mare Nostrum
