  1. An oldie but a goodie. a lot of people miss it too, i know it took me a few tries my 1st time hearing it.
  2. I've been seeing these watches advertised in magazines for a few years now, and always liked them. The Stienhausen Classic. It's one of those since 1923 deals that we see all over the place, and I came close to just ordering one several times but never got around to it. Today, I was at sharper image when a cust was commenting on a display watch being noisy. After he left I went to look at it and it was the was the Stienhausen. Noisy rotor. That was because the screw for the rotor was in the spacer ring and the rotor was loose and wobbley. I talked him down to 65 bucks as is and took it home. I guess I'll fix it. Probably could have got him to go lower too but oh well. It has a see thru back, weighs 69.3 grams, beats at 21,600bph, has date, and 3 subdials, day, month and some am/pm 24hr dial. Kind of looks like a mock moonphase. Forgot what those are called. The hands glow, but not very bright, the crown screws in, says 5atm water resistant and hacks. 35J automatic movement from china. Not Miyota, since it has the hack feature. I didn't measure it, but its bigger than a sub and the dial is off white with a yellowish tachymeter rehaut. I'm glad I finally got one of these so I could stop wondering about them. According to ads, this is some kind of "homage" watch, so thats almost a rep, right? Actually, I am wondering what this movement is, here's a pic w/o rotor and winding bridge if anyone can take a look, and some shots of the watch itself Thanks for reading.
  3. I bought a cruddy watch from the display case at sharper image today for a discount, nothing special, but the screw holding the rotor in was snapped off inside. I don't have any drill bits to tap it out, what else can I do besides make it a manual watch? I have screws to fit, but this is a new problem for me. Here's a pic
  4. Beetlejuice! Who me? By the way, I'm not scared, here's how we do it in Chitown:
  5. The Zigmeister, this looks alot like the other mystery 2824 you did a review on before, in terms of finish on a few of the areas, I guess you'll know more after you service the current movement in question, I can't wait to see. I'm wondering if perhaps these are made by the fabled "3rd shift"? I guess there would be no way to tell since it is unlikely any of us will every visit the factoery, but if it turns out to be exact in terms of parts interchangeability, but inferior materials, that is almost the definition of 3rd shift goods. Personally, as long as it runs well and is reliable, I have no problem with it. If anybody is making extra money by supplying these instead of the for sure true swiss made, it would most likely be the manufacturer and thats too far away from me, the consumer to get all bent out of shape about a few extra bucks. If the wholesaler/manufacturer doesn't lower his price to the retailer, the retailer won't lower thier price to the consumer, that goes with any business, not just reps or watches. It's a business, not a favor. Of course, I'm new here, so my opinion isn't worth much, but thats my .02
  6. I figured it out, the Lange 1 is discontinued! AAARRG.
  7. Very informative and awesome pics, I had a 2824 sitting here on my desk as I was reading so I was able to compare. Mine came out of a Gruen, so I know it's the real deal. Good eye on that stuff. I had a couple of posts on this thing, mainly about swapping out with my DG2813, I was just posting in another thread where a member was talking about his stopping, and I look down at mine at it was also stopped...wierd. Anyway, The Zigmeister, I'll be putting my 2824 in the watch in a few weeks or so now, and I remember you saying that you never had the chance to do a breakdown and review of this DG2813 that supposedly is 28800bph, I'm wondering if you would like to check mine out? It's acting a little iffy, so I wouldn't want it back, but I am curious to see how good/bad these movements are as it seems they may be using them more. What I do know is that the factory sells them for $4 a piece in lots of 100, so I don't imagine them being very reliable. Almost forgot to ask, how does this eta copy compare the the other 2824 copy with no markings? Does it appear to be the same thing, just with engravings, or something totally different?
  8. Not the same, i think miyota copy. I would just drop another 98 bucks on another one if you can't get it going. Do like watchbuff said
  9. Which noob do you have, as in where did you get it? I have the beginmariner from josh ( "eta" 2813) and I threw my 2824 in it just to check it out and it looked ok, but that may not be the case for your watch. If you do have the same one read: http://www.rwg.cc/members/index.php?showtopic=54283 The 2813 beginmariner worked, but alligoat is right, if its for the 2836, a 2824 will have stem alignment issues, aka it just won't work. It wouldn't be easy anyway, you would have to unstick the datewheel overlay from the old movement and glue it over the datewheel on the 2824, but you would have to get it lined up properly, which is not easy your 1st time. You would then have to cut the dial feet off and either glue the dial to the spacer ring or apply dial stickers. Oh, and you would have to buy some eta hands too, so your talking maybe 40-60 for an eta, and 17 or 20 for hands, so roughly $60-80 to fix it, is it worth it? I would say its not a job for a beginner, but if you have some experience it could be easy. Perhaps the dealer will sell you a replacement, but I'm not sure
  10. Interesting, I was under the impression that it was recently restored, like in the past 3 years or so. Either way the empire room and main lobby are reminiscent of early european/french architecture and it's hard to find quality like that these days. Not kidding But this is definitely not inspired by rappers. I would really only get it if it was a good deal, like below someone saw it for $125, thats a bottle of Dom. Aha, the mask, I love it! I vaguely recall the one time I had it at Rive Gauche when my bud was entertaining some gold diggers, I remember having a glass and thinking "thats it?" Immediately went back to my trusty ol' Amstel Light Thats my 2nd choice, maybe not 1982, never had it, but Krug will do to. I'll just have to see what comes up. Basically I'm thinking it would just be something to be able to remember a little more, for instance, last year we were drinking Hennessy XO, and dam! Next thing I new I couldn't remember if I was at a wedding, NYE or wtf. This year is going to be a little special, the boys that moved are coming to Chicago for new years and the last time we were all together for this holiday was 2001. Tentative planning for this year started about Jan 1 '07, so its all settled now and should be a blast no matter what. Luckily, I put the cash aside for this, or I'd be in trouble right now. I'm really looking forward to it, the drinks won't make the day, but it could make a good story perhaps. It'll be like old times with a twist.
  11. How much do you think this lot is worth? I like the bezel and winding mechanism. Crowns too actually. Previously on with buy it now of 189 and didn't sell so that says something i suppose. ebay 110188376098
  12. Sounds like a fun guy, maybe he wants to come to the party.
  13. Anyone know where I can find some bottles of Cristal for a good price? I think normal retail is $300-400 a bottle $1k at a restaurant and so on. I'm buying up NYE tickets right now and thought maybe I could try to get some of this too. No rep cristal! Anyway, me and a friend are going downtown (Chicago) next weekend to check out the hotels that have the good New Year's Eve balls. Last year we went to the Drake, and this year its between Drake, Palmer House, Hilton, Swissotel, the Allerton, and maybe the McCormick Place Hyatt. I think the top contenders are Palmer, Hilton and Swissotel, I do prefer the more "vintage" places, and Palmer House is gorgeous, the lobby awe inspiring, Hilton is the Hilton, nice but nothing opulent, and I believe the Swissotel is very modern, which I am not a big fan of compared to old school. If I want metal, glass, and cement, I'll go to jail for free. All tickets sell out every year, all of the above are in the top 10 for Chicago, have multiple ballrooms, open bars, and good pre-party dinners. Hilton offers a VIP table with coctail server and premium bar for $2200, which includes 8 general admission tickets, so thats only $275 a pop. (Still need to pay for a room) All this and what, Moet & Chandon? I have a line on the Cubans already, but WTF, its New Years, why not a bottle of Cristal or two? I'll be buying tickets for the Drake, and holding on to them until they are sold out and scalping them, I know from experience that if you hold tickets to the Drake, you are the man and you will get 4x what you paid. Is that unscrupulous? I don't think so. If I were to attach a bunch of Noobmariners to the inside of my coat and try to get 4x what I bought them for, that might be unscrupulous, but thats not the plan. I think of the extra tickets as an investment. Well, thats my story, and if anyone is interested in going in on the VIP table, let me know, we might only have about 4-6 willing to do that. Not sure that is the plan yet, but with enough people yup.
  14. Thanks, but no Lange 1. I don't get it, its one of the simple ones and the reps aren't half bad...where did they go?
  15. V- Looks nice from what I can see, shiny subdials though. Ahhh the lange rep. I noticed they just throw moonphases into those things like they have extra or something too. Josh used to have the one I want but it's gone now.
  16. Heres stuff on Ioffer if anyone can say anything about it: http://www.ioffer.com/i/ALange-Sohne-Lange...k-Dial-30231491 http://www.ioffer.com/i/ALange-Sohne-Lange...r-band-30239906 just starters, I love the "genuine leather" stamp on the strap, and the date is too small like all the rest. Wonder if the power reserve works. Whats the deal with the dual movements? Risky?
  17. I know the A Lange & Sohne reps are not all that, but the lange 1 reps look ok to me, but I can't seem to find any. I did see some on Ioffer, but I'm hesitant to pull the trigger so far since the band looks like junk. Any ideas? Heres one on the bay: 140173086650
  18. This country has done a lot for only 200 years old, and there have been some HUGE triumphs in the past, but in my lifetime (beginning in 1980), I have not seen anything major. My parents were there for the end of segregation, huge rallies against the war in Vietnam, my grandparents saw the depression and the boom after WWII, and my great grandparents probably saw the crumble of the monopolies. (You can argue that monopolistic companies have just taken on a different form (microsoft), and I would not disagree with you because that is true.) Maybe I'm just waiting to see what major change brought on by my generation will be. There have been some things close, but many may think that history is being made when in actuality it is mere headlines. When is the next major rallied cry from the masses calling for change going to take place? Are there just too many issues these days to see something like that occur again? Maybe so. 50 groups of 50 people for 50 different subjects will blend together into some kind of static white noise, while all 2500 of those people saying the same thing will be a resonating roar impossible to ignore by those who can bring the change about. I'm not talking changes like my original post in this thread, like getting petty laws passed, but something historic. Of course, there have been some good causes that went through, for instance Amber alert for kidnapped children and the Jessica Lunsford act that will probably be passed as well. Those were brought on by MAJOR public outrage and I'm happy to see them go into effect. As good as those laws are, it's not the same as the end of slavery or segregation. Every child should be protected and these kinds of laws should have been there long ago. It is definitely a good example of how Americans get things done. Well, night, I'll be back tomorrow.
  19. I'll have to check that book out. Collective Wisdom is far more promising than collective stupidity, I based my judgement on my own observations. As far as the attention span, I don't mean 5 minutes literally, but we generally, as a whole, don't really complain about things long enough to change them. Instead, something else pisses everyone off and they all focus on that. There are groups dedicated to certain causes, but the country as a whole usually can't focus on an issue long enough to do something about it without getting distracted by the next big issue. We just need bigger groups, I guess. As for spewing forth for hours on 1 topic, I can too, and I type fast and think fast so this is good.
  20. Funny mental picture with that one. Job? I looked for 2 days and gave up. I'm taking this as a wake up call, party might be over for now, but with what I have and the PT stuff I do around here, cars, phones, sat boxes, etc, I'll be ok for a while. I'm going to go back to college next year, but may move to to the college town this spring.in order to get established there first. I will not be looking for work in the mean time. I must say, it will be interesting next year being a 27 year old freshman, but people always think I'm like 20 or sometimes 19 anyway. If I do move there this spring, I will get some kind of avg college kid job, but right now I'd rather have inconsistent income than be busting my ass for pennies. You are right, I do need something , maybe a new hobby. Hmmm maybe there's a AD where I'm going and I can get a job there.........sweet.
  21. I came across this one on the bay earlier today, item 270181470455. I don't know enough to know if this is a good one or not, but I have bought some eta 2824's from this guy and they were great. Shipping seemed kind of slow. He wants 650 for the V23, past exp with him makes me think he might take 500. I have no idea what these are worth, but there you go if you want to take a look, and also see what others think....
  22. Aha, a fellow stem snapper! I got 8 of them for 7.60 shipped from ebay seller kaisten. Shipped quick too. It was item # 180157674631 I don't see that they have any listed right now, but asking can't hurt. It was cheaper and easier than offrei. Also, what case and movement are you working with? I had a 16014, and I found that the 2836 lined up better than the 2824. I hear, but am not certain that the 2824 fits better into the 16233 case.
  23. V-- Whats wrong with your car? I think I would enjoy brazil, but the orgies not so much unless what I heard about Brazil being the most AIDS infested country on our side of the planet isn't true. Can't remember where I got that notion though. Google, here I come again! Even with all of this going on with Brazil and everything, I wish I could be here the day where the oil all dries up. What a clusterfu-- thats going to be. I would imagine that we would know at least 20 years ahead of time, if not more, but i will be interesting to see how easy other methods of fuel are. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for big business and opportunity, but I dislike a company that complains about China sucking up all the oil and then brags about world record profits all in the same year. Most Americans have an attention span of about 5 minutes, so these things get forgotten. I firmly believe that the more people there are in a room, the lower the average intelligence gets. That is to say for strangers and not events where everyone is acquainted. Say a road can fit 50 cars in a 1/4 mile stretch, then with 60, it would be clogged, and 40 it should be moving right? WRONG. People won't see tons of space between cars and will slow down just expecting a jam. Then it gets worse until it turns into a jam and now there are twice as many cars on the road at it was designed for. Thats just one example. Put 3 strangers in a room, and then lay yourself down on the floor and act hurt. They will hopefully quickly confer with each other and ask if you need assistance. Now go to the mall and do that. 200 people will stand there flabbergasted waiting for someone else to do something, and probably do this in a state of panic. More people = lower IQ, I coined that "collective stupidity" and I find it amusing. The larger a group of people you ask a question to, the longer it takes to get the answer, it seems like it should be faster because of more thinking entities in the room, but I'm telling you they cancel each other out. There I go on a tangent on a rant......thats a new one even for me.
  24. 243 million cars? thats almost 1 per person. could you imagine if a country like china had a percentage like that? We're crazy. I have 8 cars left still myself, but they're not for keeping. @Everything---I believe the world population is about 52% women, and 48% men, so we're outnumbered anyway. Need to find somewhere where its like 3:1 women:men. Get on the Google! I want to go to brazil too, lets have a RWG party there.......
