from the seller's description of the watch (click here for the auction):

"You are bidding on Rolex 1680 Vintage Submariner Mens Watch w/ Box Papers. We bought it from original owner's grandson. Papers and tags match up with serial number on the watch. According to the owner this watch was recently repaired at an authorized repair center, although it has no receipts to prove it. Band appears to be later, movement is proper 26J 1570 movement. The private party who sold it to us says the dial was separately purchased from Rolex. Our watchmakers took it off and it is singed Singer, one of the many known signatures on the backs of Rolex dials, but our boss, Mr. Hess thinks the red has been painted on the dial. Our watchmakers think he is wrong. Big arguments here. Since the boss writes the checks I vote for the red being added!"

Whichever is the case, the latest bid was over $4K so the new owner is about to find out.

FWIW, I agree with those who think it looks painted red.

Red SUBMARINER font looks terribly wrong. The font on the genuine red 1680 isn't even nearly as tall, and the red color is wrong shade.

This is why I've always adviced people to avoid reps of the red version. They're easy to call out every time.
