Pugwash
I may be in Vegas (working CES Jan 7-10) and don't have a clue about what to expect. What is public transport like (I don't drive)? Are cheap hotels where I won't end up on CSI as "Victim" easy to get? Anyway, anyone in the area willing to offer me advice? Fancy a quick GTG over beer?
jeff g
Pug, Everything on the strip is within walking distance. Taxi's if you need one work too. Public transportation?? Who knows? For fine watches go to Wynn, or Bellagio. Torneau is in the Belliagio mall as well. Wynn has the nicest shop, with AP's, Panerai ,PP, etc The whole town sucks however. Paris is a much nicer place. But life and vacations are what you make it. Have fun.
hiker01
Hey Pug! The Sahara is not bad and you could get a $25/night room usually from Monday to Thurs. Just remember it's on the other end of the strip (North)! If your exhibit is at the South End (The Venetian and such), it's gonna be tough, although there's a monorail that you might be able to use... check this! and this! and this!....hope this would help you out! Most of the hotels in the south end and in-between of the strip are in the $80??? and above range~, and unlucky for you, your schedule falls on the expensive part of the week! Check this for some good hotel deals: Tripres.com Vegas.com If you plan to indulge, don't forget to pada your pockets.....LOL! Bring a good pair of walking shoes......most places are within walking distance and January is nice walking month in Vegas! Let me know if you need to know some other stuff and I'll try to guide you to the right places.......if nothing else, don't miss the Tourneau Time Dome located in the Forum Shoppes in the Caesar's Palace Hotel and Casino. Enjoy and have fun! F-
jchurch
umm don't bend the cards, don't touch the chips after the dealer says no more bets, don't hand money directly to the dealer... If you hit a slot machine with a payout over 1199 you will have to pay taxes on it. If you play at the tables you wont get hit up for taxes unless you hit a 300 to 1 odds with a $600 bet. Staying off the strip will get cheaper hotel rates but getting around will be a hassle unless you have a car. If you are going to do the night club thing bring a date and make sure she looks good, also wear some instyle clothing lol. Don't wear shorts and sandles to the club because you wont get in lol. If you are taking a cab from the airport to the strip take paradise road, you will save a good 10 or 15 bucks in cab fare (make sure you ask the driver to take paradise not the tunnel). It is against the law to hail a cab on las vegas blvd or freemont, well it is against the law for the cab driver to pick you up lol. No open alcohol beverages in anything other than chartered buses. If you are going public transportation you should probably stay on the strip and use the double decker buses I think it runs 5 bucks or so for a whole day pass. Also lots of casinos have trams and means to get between each other. If you are going to walk use the crosswalk, jay walking costs 150 bucks if you get caught. Cameras... lots of casinos will get on you for taking photos in the gambling area, so be sneaky about it if you are going to do that. Also cameras are everywhere so don't do stuff you don't want on film. Parking if you drive out there is kind of a hassle on the strip... Most hotels have free parking behind the casinos. However I use valet as much as possible but the last time I went we took a subaru out and getting in to the valet late in the day resulted in being told they were full or only open for hotel guests. Last time I was there we stayed at Planet Hollywood and it was nice. Cheap room rates for on the strip which was good times. Don't stay anywhere north of say circus circus or you could end up on CSI lol
redwatch
Fancy a quick GTG over beer? I live in LA, but I'm always up for a drive to Vegas. It's only 4 -5 hours away. If you do come out, we should definitely gather up some folks for a pint! CES is usually held between the Venetian and the Hilton, so some really close hotels would be the Venetian, Treasure Island, The Wynn, the Hilton and the Mirage. Check into those ones first to see what sort of rates you can get. Any time there is a convention in Vegas, prices go up considerably. It all depends on what your budget is, and what you would like to do while you are visiting.
Dudemeister
I may be in Vegas (working CES Jan 7-10) and don't have a clue about what to expect. What is public transport like (I don't drive)? Are cheap hotels where I won't end up on CSI as "Victim" easy to get? Anyway, anyone in the area willing to offer me advice? Fancy a quick GTG over beer? There are no cheap hotels during the big conventions like CES. Everything triples in price, even the "off-strip" dives charge a couple of hundred bucks a night. If your company is not paying or reimbursing you for your stay, you're better off finding someone to share the expenses with. Even places like Whiskey Pete's Casino in Primm (20 miles south on i15) which usually charge $20-25 per night start charging as much as $150 during these periods. Cabs, especially from the convention center to the hotels and from the airport will cost you $30 minimum. Bottom line is that everything is very expensive during this time and you're better off staying away or finding someone to share the costs with. Good luck. vlydog
Hello J, I am assuming that the show is held in the LVCC. Make sure the hotel that you book has shuttle service there. The one and only time I have been to LV I stayed here; four nights were less than $200. http://www.stratospherehotel.com/rooms_and_suites/#tow

jfreeman420
I agree with just about everything that has been said here for your trip to Vegas. Rooms are cheap right now and if you wire about $20k into a Casino's cage you can get a free trip. $50k and they pay for your airfare and pick you up in a limo at the airport. If you plan to gamble sign up for the players club. There are a lot of casinos owned by Harrahs like Paris and Caesars so if you join at harrah's your card will work in all the hotels. You would be surprised how fast points can add up. It is easy to get some comped meals. The seafood buffet at Bellagio is a must as is the Palm steakhouse at Caesar's Palace. The poker rooms at Caesars' and Wynn are the best IMO and the Bellagio is legendary. Go to the Golden Nugget in downtown for a $2.99 shrimp cocktail and chili dog after the single deck blackjack. Don't wander too far off Fremont street though, could be a bit dangerous. You can get anywhere in Vegas for a $10 cab ride. The best public transport is the monorail and it is great to walk around the strip this time of year. Beautiful weather. Remember to be aware of your surroundings at all times, only give money to the panhandlers with the sign that says "why lie I need a beer", stay away from the guy that is selling coke in the bathroom, and remember the Hookers aren't all 19 year old horny college girls no matter what the ad says. The Fremont Street experience is a must also. Some of the best things in Vegas are free. I try to eat each meal in a different hotel just to get the most of Vegas when I am there. If you want the best haircut and shave you have ever had try the Art of Shaving inside Mandalay bay. The best and worth the $60.00. Good luck and enjoy. Vegas is one of the best places in the world IMO.
redwatch
I will add this......one of the greatest eating experiences I have ever had was in the Mandalay Bay at Rum Jungle. It is a Brazilian style feast. Eight meat courses and lots of sides. Worth every penny. They bring out each different meat on a giant skewer, cut of a slab for you and then bring the next one about 5 minutes later. Once you have tried all 8, you can then request more of the ones you liked the most. It's all you can eat, but I usually only make through the 8 samplings and then have one or two more tries of the salmon and the sausages. Oh, and they have over 140 different types of rum. Hence the name

Hence the name I can vouch for this. It's an awsome restaurant, and if you go there late, brazillian girls will be dancing from the roof. Very nice place. Be sure to have the breakfast buffet at the Mandalay as well, it's kick a$$! I was at the CES 4-5 years ago as a Norwegian retail agent, it's usually held at the same time as the AVN Awards, witch can be very interesting. I had a VIP badge for the AVN awards and ended up spending more time there than at the actual CES, haha. The stars hang out on the Venitian! So if you want to party with Jenna Jameson, thats where you should book a room. Thats how I met up... Anyways. If you get close to some of the guys in that industry you do not have to bring money. I ended up spending about $20K in 3 days, only about $2K of my own money. They won't let you pay for anything. I guess there is money in the porn industry, who would think that. haha. Buy your self a VIP black market entrycard and let them pay with their dirty money:) Have a ball, Las Vegas is a cool city if you don't use your own money. VIVA...... EDIT; Adult Video Entertainment Awards 2010 is at the 9th of jan. And it's been moved to the Palms. You should book a room there. You might need to plot down a couple of sentences to strat a conversation. Some how I found it hard to start a conversation with a girl holding a statue for "best analshow 2004." NORing
"So, did it hurt? When you fell from heaven? Bum first?" Haha, wish that had come to mind. This actually happened. I was however saved by a lowball rapper that came down the red carpet and sat down next to me in the bar. After a couple of drinks I eventually had no problems talking with anyone. I have never met so many off the rack mindblowing nutcases in my life. Truly a fun weekend. Evidently in the VIP lounge' in Vegas the U.S laws do not apply.
