Porn Buddies ?!

PeteM

Recommended Posts

I was thinking the other day which for me is an unusual occurence! So I thought I would share it on here, in the hope of leaving a record of it for prosperity!

Anyway I was recalling a few years back, having a conversation with some very good friends of mine. ( some sadly are no longer here but my memories of them live on). We were talking about if any misfortune was to fall upon us who would look after our gear and make sure our personal effects got safely back to our families.

One guy (Bluey) mentioned a film he saw, I cant recall it, where a couple of characters had agreed to become 'Porn Buddies'. The idea being if one or other suffered a misfortune the other would clear his stuff of porn so his parents or wife, cant recall, wouldnt see it and feel any disappointment etc etc.

So in the same vain we all decided to ensure we would make certain if one of us went the out the door, so to speak! That one of us would make sure nothing would be packed up and sent back that might cause embarrassment to our families, this wasnt limited to porn but anything. Also anything of value either money wise or sentimentally would be taken back personally when that guy returned home and put in the hands of the family with an explanation etc.

Anyway I was thinking, as I mentioned before, what about now. I dont share this hobby/passion with anyone outside these forums. I have never met any of you guys, well I dont think so but I do remember 6 degrees of seperation, so its possible! My wife and kids know this interest I have, I dont think they realise just how much I enjoy it and certainly they dont understand my collection of watches. Nor does anyone else I know!

So if tomorrow I was to crushed by a falling piano or run over by a steam roller, how could I ensure my family were able get the value of my collection without either being conned by someone or just diiscarding them or giving them away etc etc. Especially the parts.

I realised I had no 'Watch Buddy' someone who knew the worth of my collection and how to dispose of it so it could benefit other guys like me, who would appreciate the stuff or put it to good use. And not go to someone who would take advantage of my Wife and Kids.

So this being the case I have decided to start writing a pictorial inventory of my collection of reps and Gens and to some extent parts although this is less practical. I have also listed these sites and my log in details as well as info on some members who might be able to help. As I would be happy to do the same in similar circumstances.

The thing is my wife knows I have gens she has an idea they have value but she has no idea how much, not that I hide that from her, shes just not interested. she knows how much I spend, Sort of!, but not invidual watches worth especially if I get a good deal, for example I bought a new 88 for less than half price she knows what I paid but despite me telling her she would not appreciate how much more she would get for it. Plus she wouldnt be really payingf attention to that sort of thing given the circumstances, (yes she would be too busy partying!!!).

This is even more relevant with Reps, I mean she walks into a jewellers offers him an LH111 he says rep assuming he does or thinks he has a bargain gen and offers her a few quid she will say yes because she knows its a rep. Now I am not saying she would go into a jewellers its just an example. And god forbid she might research, say that LH111, do a google and think its gen, I mean she doesnt know about certs paperwork etc. Or the opposite she has a gen and its punted by A.N.Other as a rep etc etc

So say she Ebays it, or she walks into an AD etc etc I wouldnt want her to suffer any embarassment or unknowingly defraud someone.

So hopefully my inventory will help, I have told her I have it and she must use it in any such event. I have it secured along with other personal stuff but I have given a key to another family member to hold in case I lose mine or something happens.

Of course it wont solve the issues above but it will go someway to helping her or my family realise my watches worth and prevent embarassment or worse still police involvement.

So if any of you guys have had similar thoughts.... what have you done about it? Do you have a 'Watch Buddy'? Has anyone any experience of this? I mean there must be a few members no longer with us did anyone on here get involved with that side of things.

I would be interested to know...... :D

I hope this dont offend no one its certainly not intentional and I hope it makes some sense to you....

First of all, thank u for the mis-leading topic title

Second, maybe u can send ur inventory check to another close member that could estimate how much its worth, and give him ur wife's e-mail, or even give ur wife his e-mail, whatever u think is suitable

In case something happens (God forbid), he/she could get in touch and sort it out

:evil2:

First - LOL

Second - I know what its worth minimum and maximum. As mentioned some contact details are on my inventory for that purpose.

I was wondering more what you guys would or have done.

Someone could start a company like 'BuyYourGold' !!

Buy your rep!!! :g::D

Hey Pete......Good topic (and NO I didnt come here because the topic had "porn" in it..........ok maybe I did) :bangin: This is a food for thought topic, and it got me thinking too. My watch inventory isnt that large, and its always changing, and I have only just got my first rep. I had always thought I would leave my watches to my best friend (or sister to do what she wants with them) - im not married or have kids yet.......but yeah they would probably want to sell them.

So I guess i'd set up a spreadsheet with the watch details, put "genuine" or "rep", current value.......

Orrrrrrrrr, just tell them to bury my watches with me!

ok...i admit i did a double-take on the author - as i thought it was a Hike post...but alas, no... :pardon:

i suggest you make a list - as best you can, keeping it occassionally up-to-date - with the names/values/etc of the pieces and components...and with that list find a member here that could/would act as the family proxy for their sale, valuation, etc...get name/contact info/etc - making it easy for the family to reach out to the member - not through a pm... :whistling: kind of a supplement to your will...

but what do i know...last i checked i thought your 000 is only worth $129 - with the coupon... :winkiss:

Hi PeteM,

You've mentioned you've got a wife but not sure if you have kids. My son who's now 3 years old going to 4, is VERY interested in my watches. I try to show him the watches and he chooses the watch I wear on some days.I even gave him a broken rolex for him to use as his own and play with.

One day when he's bit older I'll probably let him in on the little secret about reps. So one day when I'm gone he can keep the collection or sell it if he so chooses. The only concern is whether the current style of watches will stand the test of time cos by the time he's old enough he might think of these as vintage and too old-fashioned for his taste.

Just me 2 cents.

I don't figure the watches will last long enough for this to be an issue ;)

Some members on this board purchase a new watch (or more than one I'm not sure how many) per year and sell it(them) and buy something else too. So one could always clear out his/her watch collection if it is of any need.

I thought about this as a slight dilemma one day but it doesn't matter that much. I think of it this way. My dad purchased himself a quartz day-date as a novelty when I was young and then handed it off to me before I reached high school. I wore it a bit and I still have it in a box, but it isn't really anything to be worried about. A lot of people own these and it is pretty prevelant in our culture. It is all fine.

Not quite the point I was trying to make mate. My fault mustn't of explained myself properly

Say it happened tomorrow? If like me you have gens and frankens and reps then potentially you have issues on a number of levels as I refer to above.

Funny you should mention. Good topic! Gentleman, be careful with your words, dont get in trouble like I did. :black_eye:

I'm getting married in almost exactly a month. I told my, well, mine as well say wife now, that if something happened to me. "Give my bike to so and so, my guitar, this, that, my watches go to this guy, that guy..." And she had a FIT.

I don't have a lot, but the stuff I have is nice I guess. She makes more money than me, so her being offended wasn't a selfish thing, it was a very touching thing. She was insulted that she thought I would leave her without my prized posessions, because they are "man toys" and I wanted my dad/friends to have them (of course I didnt leave her completely out). She felt those would be her connection to me and would cherish having them, it seemed extremely important and she was very hurt. So like I said, I don't have much, and she can have it if I go.

Anyhow, I told her If God forbid something happened to me, I thought she should get rid of it and move on with her life (we are in our early 30's) and not have all these memories around her. She cried more. I probably cried too. :cry2: You can only watch that so long without succumbing to the emotion yourself!

So tread lightly, your wives might cherish those watches more than you think.

If something happened to me I would direct her here. She would login with my info and I would expect Admin to see to things personally, that means you Nanuq (No offense T, I just know Bob better, and he's married. ). I think this could be a SOP. Just send them here and let admin's assign some helpers (forum elders/pros) as they see fit.

I always wonder out loud to myself this same thought.. what if I check out tomorrow.. what would happen to my collection.. well I figure I would leave an email with my brother or another family member and have en contact Ubi.. or Kruzer.. so some of my watches can find a good home.. that would make me happy to know they were going to RWG'rs..

but as far as an inventory.,.

nah.. to lazy..

Pete,

Well, firstly I have to say I avoided opening the post at work for fear of what might be inside :p Your post is a reflective one, I didn't think about what would happen to our collections if something should happen to any of the members on the forum. People can leave us at any moment and if there is one thing that is important to remember, is to live life to the fullest...with no regrets! So, like you said, if family could be saved from a potential nightmare, then it's a good thing!

Once a person starts acquiring items of value like a house or car...it's always insured, there's records, pictures and a value to any of the items. I was taught that anything worth something to myself or my family, like pictures...should be kept in a safe place. Items around the house should be documented, photographed and the information stored...just in case! But the value of a collection that may contain Gens & Reps is a different kettle of fish, so a detailed journal and a "buddy" is a great idea :thumbsupsmileyanim: The earlier someone starts the better so...I'm gonna start my "in-case" journal sooner rather than later, to be safe :D There isn't that much, but why not continue with past practices, right?

P4GTR makes a good point...loved ones might cherish them more than we might think!!! Lots to think about I guess!

Thanks Pete, great idea ;)

This is actually a good topic and of course (naturally) i clicked on it 'cause it said PORN...lol...

Anyway, a few of my friends know of my watch collecting madness and I will be leaving pretty much everything of my reps to my best friend in particular to sort it all out.. The wife already knows which ones are real and which ones are reps...I think!?

I would hate for my wife to sell one of my gens for a rep price, here take this fako Panerai for $100...arghhh or even worse, have her try and walk into a dealer and try and sell one of my reps for a gen price...."hello Sir, how much for my deceased husbands AP ROO" that barely wore..."

Oh the horror....

;-)

I know some of my watches will stay with my son as they have family History, I have 3 Omegas each of which belonged to my Dad, Grandad and great Grandad which he bought in 1895, I also have a couple of them myself and these will all go to my son.

My wife doesnt particualar cherish me watches nor will she I would think, after all how could she?? I take my watches out more than I take her out!!! :whistling:

Seriously I know they might keep some but at some stage for whatever reason they will be sold, I just want my family to know what they have. Its up to them what they do with them :D

+1 on the impending nuptials mate
