MilSub
About a week ago I recieved a PT 1680 red sub that I'd wanted to try for a while. I now have some parts on order and have started to modify it to more gen like specifications. It seems they have changed the stock lug holes and spring bars to gen spec ones, 1.3mm holes and 2mm spring bars so no work needed there. Done so far: Gen crown Age case Age bracelet Age bezel insert File crown guards Open up the date window so the whole numbers show Brush the rehaut to a smoother finish Waiting for: Clark 127 crystal New insert to go with the new crystal Machine crystal retaining ring for the Clark crystal Work some more on the crown guards Age the case/bracelet some more Maybe add some whiter lume Pressure test Enjoy the watch I really like this project and think this one might get daily beater status. highoeyazmuhudee
looks like its coming along, i suggest everyone building a vintage project go seek out the gen and hold it in your hands, its a very educational experience. youll discover some subtleties that were easily over looked. if youre in the U.S you could always buy this gen 127 http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160565580633&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT Edited April 4, 2011 by highoeyazmuhudee

woof*
Lookin good! I see PT on here alot, does that refer to the dealer? My 1680 from Josh needs the holes drilled and difinately did not come with 2mm bars. I love what you did with the insert, not too bleached as some I've seen. Jkay
Oh? Well then I stand corrected. I thought those watches were produced (as some are) by a factory at the request of a Dealer.
alligoat
Certainly Angus- PureTime- was first out with this latest line of vintages (1665, 1680), but Josh has also come out with them since then, although not exactly the same in some cases. The idea of enlarging the date window is a cool idea- looks good mil-sub. If you need a crystal retaining ring, jmb is the man. He did mine on my PT 1665 and it worked out beautifully- watch is WR. These make excellent beaters- perfect reps, IMO.
highoeyazmuhudee
the PT outter CGs need doing as well, they look like cuspids. pt was first to the market which is why its referred to as 'his' pro watch polo also carries the same line as does sean
urbanshogun
hey, I also got a 1680, but from narikaa. When it arrived the crystal was loose, so when I took it apart and pressed it with a lamp clamp. This broke the crystal! I'm ordering a 127 from cousinsuk, but how does it stay in the case? does it just slot into the metal ring? thanks.
Jkay
You know ... when I was typing "precious time" I was thinking to myself "is that right? it doesnt sound right" .. I knew it was Angus in my head .. heheh

MilSub
thats looking real nice mate. what do you use to brush the rehault? Thanks! I put the watch case in my lathe and used a scotchbrite pad like this. I just fitted the Clark 127 today and I'm waiting for the new insert to go with it. Is the Clark crystal supposed to line up with the date window on the PT sub? Mine is slightly off, looks like the date mag is too far out on the edge of the crystal. I didn't have any stainless steel to make the retainer ring from so I made a spacer out of aluminum to fit between the crystal and the PT ring. Seems to work well but it took the better part of this afternoon to get it perfect. I'll come back with new pictures as soon as the new insert is in. Jkay
Yes thats correct. The PT 1680 dial and date wheel are too far left, SO the Clark 127 is off the right. Unfortunate, really.

Thanks! It doesn't really bother me, I just wanted to know I got the right crystal. Still looks a lot better than the PT crystal.
Jkay
What did you use to touch-up the bare metal of the date window after you filed it larger?
MilSub
What did you use to touch-up the bare metal of the date window after you filed it larger? I used matte black model paint on the tip of a toothpick. It looks good if you don't inspect it up close.

Mapman57
i dont think its exclusive to him. And OP..... PT is actally referring to PureTime not Precious time in this context? Angus originally supported the development of this vintage range, with the old stock/reclaimed eta 2846 at around $198 originally. Wish I was brave enough to take on the date window mod on he dial! Edit: oops, posted before I read all of the posts, just seen this has been covered now! Edited April 7, 2011 by Mapman57
highoeyazmuhudee
Angus originally supported the development of this vintage range, with the old stock/reclaimed eta 2846 at around $198 originally. actually i recall sean at etaswiss had this production line showcased well before angus even had it in his catalogue. its just that angus is an affiliated dealer and sean is not, so everyone bought from him and wrote about it. MilSub
Some new pics with the Clark 127 and the new insert. Anyone know if there's a source for "thick font" inserts? With some more work on the crown guards I think this one will look pretty good for a low budget 1680 build.
alligoat
The best place to find a fat font insert is on VRM- Vintage Rolex Market. But expect to pay over $100 and easily $200, maybe w/o a pearl.
