Tablet - Which One to choose

Recommended Posts

So Tablets are off and running and of course, IPad is reining supreme at the moment. I know others such as Samsung Galaxy and Motorala Zoom are making their way into the markets too.

However, does anyone suggest a tablet (not the cheap Chinese knock-offs) besides Apple, Samsung or Motorloa? I saw the new Acer tablet for $399 and ready some great reviews about it.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I've tried them all.........Toshiba Thrive 16Gig (buy a 32GiGSD Card instead of paying for the built-in memory) is the winner IMHO!

Why:

- supports full SD card

- full USB port......connected a 4 port hub and connected 3 thumb drives and 1 external drive ..all are recognized, file manager read each albeit one device at a time

- Blue Tooth rocks......recognized my DELL Keyboard and Mouse + my Moto HD Headphones

- Full HDMI port......direct connect to your TV with regular HDMI cable......

- Android 3.1 +

- replaceable battery.....so you could carry extra ones for long haul travel.

- replaceable rubberized back cover, no need for special expensive case, just screen cover!

- fast........

- It's Toshiba

I have been shopping around for one as well and am having a tough time deciding. A lot out there now with varying options avail. I figure the best way to look at them is to decide which of the options are important to you and then choose based on that. For example, if camera quality is important then the Xoom and Playbook have the best available. Maybe OS is the breaker Android vs Apple vs QnX. 3G/4G or not or tether? USB connection? Having said all that I still haven't decided myself so just ignore my advice :p

That Toshiba actually sounds pretty good. Going to have to look at that one as well.

This only your opinion

It's the opinion of millions of people who have chosen to buy one, pretty much every reviewer, tech magazine/blogger/website/tv show, all the companies like samsung, toshiba, asus, etc. that have spent billions of dollars trying to copy the ipad from design to usability, and also all the people that are still waiting to buy one.

The only reason not to buy one is not having the money or not wanting to spend the money. It's funny when you try to reason with yourself that your not up to par device is the same or better.

I'm sure you may be happy with your Timex, but i'm a Rolex type of guy :yeah:

The Toshiba is a bit hefty.. she's a fat girl..

One of my clients bought a Playbook, loved it for about a week and then played with an iPad 2 at the Apple Store, and then walked out with a iPad2 and put his Playbook on Kijiji. Another client of mine got his hands on a Asus Transformer for a few days and was ready to buy one, but wanted to try an iPad before he pulled out his wallet. He ended up showing up in the office with an iPad2 a few days later.

At the end of the day, it's just about who does it better, ad Apple just does it better. I also bought a Android tablet recently, and after playing with it for a few hours, I just gave it to my son to play with.

If you were going to make a solid investment in a device, would you rather the market leader, or one of the market laggards. It just sucks kicking yourself after a few weeks..

There's always an Apple/Ipad lover amongst us! It's all about what's important to you in a Device.........believe me, Iwas as excited as you when the Ipad2 was announced....I felt like I took 2 Viagras with a Hard-on you can't believe, but when I read the Specs.........no Viagra or Cialis could make me hard after that........Apple is losing there forward thinking......basically thay just want your money on the next itiration......

No SD CArd/USB/HDMI support???? C'mon.....that's so out of this world in this time and age!

No user replaceable battery.......ca-shing.....$$$$$Dollar sign baby! They want you to buy a new one after a few years. And you have to be tithered to iTunes for every music/video or whatever you wanna install.....that's insane!

Let me do what I want.....is my mantra!

my .02 cents!

I never used sd cards and thumb drives for my laptop either. I have things sitting on the cloud. I use dropbox and mozy. I have 3g so instead of being limited to a 32GB card, I have about a terrabyte of storage at my disposal, and i load things and stream from it all the time. My laptops have always had a replaceable battery, and I have replaced more laptops than I have batteries for them.

It's not about being an apple lover, it's about being practical. Just like you guys here, you're not talking about buying a quartz version of a rolex rep, you are talking about a swiss eta and complaining because the bracelet has a spec of dust on it in a qc pic.

You can make the most amazing device ever, but when you have no apps for it, what good is it? The Toshiba stats aren't bad, but apparently Android 3 has less than 1000 apps.

Add to that the sad excuse for cameras that apple implemented. I mean really <1MP still shot is kind of pathetic. Also still no adobe flash. WTF. I suppose that if these features are not important then that is OK.

Quantity of apps, does it really matter? I would say quality is a much better measure. I have seen many apps in both platforms that are a complete waste of time. More so on the apple side. So it comes down to usage and preference. The ipad is a nice unit and a lot of people buy them but it does not make it the best...for everyone.

The only quality Android apps are, unfortunately iOS ports. There aren't too many exclusive Android apps that are of great quality, or really notable. I agree that it may not be for everyone, but really, why bother with second best except for saving a few bucks?

Anyhow Apple's camera is 5MP, I really don't know how you got <1MP.

Even better yet, what tablets do you guys currently own?

Agree with majority here that it boils down to what specifications are important to you. I am an avid apple lover, but haven't adopted the iPad craze yet.

I did try a Playbook while I was in RIM's hometown of Waterloo last week and I have to say.... that thing is a big piece of crap. No wonder their stock has fallen so much.

One other thought..... why in the hell would anyone want to have a camera on a tablet? You want to take good pictures, get a good camera. If it's for skype or some other form of video chat, who cares what the quality is? As long as you can see the person it really doesn't matter. I wouldn't let the camera specs deter someone from buying a good tablet. Besides, the higher the resolution of the camera the more bandwidth you tend to use up and the more dodgy the connection gets.

P.S. Yes.... Apple is only out to make money. And they do. Which is why their stock is valued at over $400 USD as of today. They make good products that people find easy to use. What more could you ask for?

Well I just typed in this search string in google "ipad camera resolution" and almost every single hit reports the same thing. Here are a few to save you some time.

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/03/just-how-bad-is-the-ipad-2-camera/

http://www.petapixel.com/2011/03/08/camera-on-the-ipad-2-is-a-worlds-first-but-in-a-bad-way/

http://www.slashgear.com/ipad-2-main-camera-just-1-megapixel-resolution-21127644/

Like I said before it comes down to what is important feature wise to the user. For some the ipad is the best for other it is not.

We'll I don't know, but I do think not having Flash Player sucks. I bought my son an ipod touch, and this was the first exposure I've has to any iProduct... Well practically every website he likes seems to use Flash, and the ipod versions are worthless.

This doesn't seem to bother many people. But it did suck explaining to. 7 year old! LOL

first i will say that i have been and still am a windows PC guy...i could never justify paying the extra $$ for an apple PC....however.....i won an ipad 2 a couple of months ago at a fund raiser and i have to say i am impressed....the app store alone makes it a cut above any other tablet (imho)...

one other thing.....i also own an itouch solely for my music library and one day i had it out of its case (it won't fit properly in my dock) and accidentally dropped it and shattered its glass face.....i checked on the internet and there really was no way for me to replace the screen properly.....i learned that the apple store could fix it for $149. so i resigned myself to paying it....i showed up at the store and after registering, the cust svc rep came and asked me what happenned.....after i explained he said it would be $149 to replace it and i agreed....he went to the back of the store and returned with another one and said that it was no charge! i was shocked to say the least....but from that moment on i was won over....i drank the apple kool aid and am now a lifelong fan....i could never imagine best buy or any other vendor for that matter making things right like that...

so, my recommendation is go with the ipad !!

I must say that apple customer service is good. I have had problems with my iPhone and they just replaced it after a year. Now when my blackberry stopped working a month after I got it I was forced to send it back to RIM where it took them 3 months to fix it and return it.
